A Heartwarming Tribute to Nelson Mandela's Legacy on Mandela Day - Over 500 Litres of Soup and over 2500 Sandwiches at the Salesian Institute Youth Projects

Cape Town, On 18th July 2023, the Salesian Institute Youth Projects (SIYP), in collaboration with Jenny Morris and her Soul Food Kitchen, and Smile 904.FM, orchestrated an exceptional soup and sandwich-making event to commemorate the extraordinary legacy of Nelson Mandela. This initiative aimed to bring about positive change in the lives of vulnerable children and youth, exemplifying the true spirit of ubuntu.

Despite the inclement weather, between 450 and 500 members of the public passionately joined SIYP in Green Point, dedicating their 67 minutes to making a significant difference in the lives of young people. Volunteers engaged in various activities, from chopping vegetables to making sandwiches or donating food, demonstrating their unwavering commitment to making a meaningful impact.

The event showcased the strength of unity as several organizations rallied together to support this noble cause. Premier FMCG - Blue Ribbon, generously provided bread for sandwich-making, while Cape Peninsula Beverages contributed tables, gazebos, and refreshments for the day, the also made available their Coca-Cola Rig, fully equipped with a sound system, playing Smile FM's music, creating a festive and welcoming atmosphere for all participants.

In the spirit of giving back, various organizations actively participated in this event, promoting awareness for their life-saving efforts. The Western Cape Blood Transfusion Service, The Organ Donor Foundation, DKMS, the Eyes 2 Eyes Foundation, Vitanova, The South African Bone Marrow Registry, and the Western Cape Transplant Association contributed their support, fostering a sense of unity and camaraderie among attendees.

The heartwarming efforts of the volunteers and organizations culminated in a truly magical day, where a staggering total of 515 litres of soup and 2540 sandwiches were donated across various communities in Cape Town. These contributions play a crucial role in keeping children fed and warm during the long, cold, and wet Cape winter, demonstrating the power of collective action and compassion.

The overwhelming response and dedication shown by Capetonians to the Salesian Institute Youth Projects' cause is a testament to the enduring spirit of community and the essence of Mandela Day. This event showcased how individuals, when united by a common purpose, can work together to build a better and more inclusive world for everyone.

The Salesian Institute Youth Projects, express their heartfelt gratitude to Jenny Morris and her Soul Food Kitchen, and Smile 904.FM and all the volunteers, participating organizations, and supporters who made this event a resounding success. Together, they have embodied Nelson Mandela's vision of a compassionate and equitable society, leaving a lasting impact on the lives of the young and vulnerable.
