17 March 2014Rabbits are not easy pets and for this and various other reasons, should not be given as Easter gifts.  Rabbits do make wonderful, exciting, intelligent companions. However, they can also be wilful and destructive. They are not like cats or dogs—they are unique and the owner will need to adapt to and accept that.  Bonding with a rabbit will require consistency, commitment, patience and logic.  Rabbits can live for more than 8 years, need a large living space and need to be spayed.  They are not low-maintenance pets.  Children can seldom commit to the responsibility of taking care of the rabbit.  Naturally, children also prefer a companion they can cuddle and pick up, but rabbits are very fragile, ground-loving animals that injure very easily when dropped.  This Easter please rather give a chocolate bunny or a stuffed toy.  If you absolutely must get a rabbit, consider adopting one from an animal welfare society rather than buying one.
