Hyde Park Corner partners with Santa Shoebox initiative once more

Once again Hyde Park Corner has partnered with one of the country’s most beloved children’s charities, Santa Shoebox as the Johannesburg Flagship Drop & Go venue for donations. Each year the Santa Shoebox Project collects and distributes personalised gifts made up of essential items and treats for underprivileged children throughout South Africa and Namibia. Over the past 14 years, generous donations have reached 957 297 children and this year, the project looks forward to announcing the millionth pledge, millionth Shoebox dropped off and millionth child to receive their Shoebox! Will YOU be the millionth Santa Shoebox donor?

Showing your support for this extremely worthwhile cause is as simple as creating a supporter profile on the Santa Shoebox Project website, checking the lists of children’s names which are made available, (the lists show children’s first name, age, gender and clothing size) and dropping off your donation at Hyde Park Corner’s Concierge Desk (collection of boxes until 30 October, drop off until 7 November). Or you can choose to make a financial pledge online and Santa Shoebox will fill the box on your behalf! Virtual Santa Shoeboxes are offered to donors unable to do their own shopping, packing and dropping off. These are made up by teams of volunteers and allocated to children living in remote areas of South Africa who would otherwise not receive a Santa Shoebox, and quite possibly no end-of-year gift at all.

With care and consideration for the intended recipients, the required contents of a Santa Shoebox will need to include:

• A toothbrush and toothpaste
• A facecloth and a bar of soap
• School supplies
• An outfit of clothing
• Sweets
• A toy

All items must be new, unused and age appropriate based on the gender and age of the child donors have chosen to gift. Extra items are most welcome, as long as they all fit into a medium-sized Shoebox (no bigger than the size of an adult running shoe box). Extra items could include for example a reusable shopping bag in which the child can carry their Shoebox home. Get creative and decorate your Shoeboxes should be cheerfully, remembering to wrap the lid separately to the box, allowing it to be opened without damaging the decorations.

All Santa Shoeboxes are trackable via the Santa Shoebox App which is available from Google Play and the App Store. Track your Shoebox from the moment you pledge to the magical moment the child receives their very own lovingly created Santa Shoebox!

COVID-19 Precautionary Measures

In the interests of volunteer and beneficiary safety, donors are asked to please sanitise their hands and wear a mask when packing their Shoeboxes, and to do so a minimum of three days prior to dropping their Shoeboxes off.
