The KZN South Coast boasts the highest number of Blue Flag beaches in the province, but its inland attractions also make it a paradise worth exploring. For a truly immersive experience, visitors can enjoy cultural traditions and outdoor adventures that make this destination unique.
“We want our visitors to truly embrace summer on the KZN South Coast,” says Dr Vusumuzi Sibiya, CEO of South Coast Tourism and Investment Enterprise (SCTIE). “Our rural tourism sites and activities are designed to give visitors authentic experiences while supporting local operators and expanding our tourism economy.”
1. Ntelezi Msani Heritage Centre (Mthwalume)
This heritage centre showcases the rich history and culture of the Zulu nation through art, dance, and traditional rituals such as Zulu stick fighting, crafting, and the isivivane stone-throwing ritual. Visitors can gain insights into health, history, and traditions through a range of interactive experiences.
2. KwaXolo Caves Adventures (near Southbroom)
Explore ancient San artwork in caves accessible through a via Ferrata hiking system. This guided adventure offers breathtaking views of the gorge and waterfalls, making it a thrilling yet educational experience.
3. KwaNzimakwe Multi Trails (near Port Edward)
Enjoy 4x4 trails, mountain biking, or hiking to Xhuluweshe Mountain. Visitors can also take a cultural tour from the Welcome Centre, visiting local homes, meeting a sangoma, and sampling traditional meals. The diverse landscapes and warm hospitality make it a must-see.
4. Gamalakhe Township Experience
Immerse yourself in township culture just 10km from Margate and Shelly Beach. Mama Smangele Memela shares her powerful story of forced relocation, enriching the experience with visits to taverns, quad biking, car spinning shows, and paintball. Nature lovers can hike from Gamalakhe across the Vungu River, enjoying local birdlife and scenic views.
5. Weza Hiking Trail (near Harding)
This 8km guided hike through the iKhwezi rural area takes visitors from the Mawane and Weza rivers to the hidden gem of Mkhoba Waterfall. Visitors can also enjoy a traditional meal at Ntozakhe homestay, where they learn about Zulu and Xhosa cultures.
6. Mission Tourism Route
Discover the history of Trappist monks and Roman Catholic missions dating back to the 1880s. Stops include the Capuchin Adoration Convent in Pumula, Maria Trost Mission in St Faiths, and more. The missions continue to serve local communities through schools and social projects.
7. NPS Adventures (KwaQwabe)
For adrenaline seekers, NPS Adventures offers quad biking, paintball, hiking, and camping in a beautiful outdoor setting. Enjoy authentic Zulu meals in this scenic part of the Majesty Chief Gumede region.
8. Umzumbe River Trail
This extensive 71km trail offers both hiking and biking through breathtaking landscapes, ending at the Indian Ocean. Homestay options provide an authentic Zulu experience, with warm hospitality and local cuisine.
9. Nyandezulu Experience
A scenic hike leads to an 80m-high waterfall, with the option to ascend Ntantana Mountain for panoramic views of rolling hills and the ocean. Visitors can also learn about the legend of the seven-headed snake said to reside beneath Mdlungwana Holy Mountain.
10. Ubumbano Farmstead (Amandawe)
This family-run farm co-operative grows fresh produce, including macadamia nuts, spinach, and sweet potatoes. Visitors can take guided tours, sample produce, and shop for freshly-made goods before enjoying a picnic on the farm.
