Sanbona lodges achieve Green Leaf certification
Submitted by: The P.R TeamThree Lodges at the beautiful Sanbona Wildlife Reserve, which is part of the Shamwari Group, have achieved the Green Leaf™ Eco Standard. Despite their remote location in the Karoo, South Africa, the certified lodges have committed to a sustainability journey by reducing their impact on the environment. Efforts have been led by a team of motivated individuals with strong environmental beliefs at heart reflected in the three lodges of Dwyka Tented Lodge, Gondwana Lodge and Tilney Manor. The Green Leaf™ Eco Standard is a global standard for measuring, managing and verifying sustainable business performance in an impartial manner. It is designed to meet and exceed compliance with South African and international Codes of Good Practice and integrated reporting, and is a blueprint for achieving a sustainable, profitable future that is ‘impact-neutral’. Green Leaf draws on the philosophy and 50-year track record in environmental leadership of its co-founder, the Wilderness Foundation.
Dwyka Tented Lodge A stand out application for the Dwyka Tented Lodge is their Bio-Rock water recycling system which re-uses water to irrigate the natural vegetation which is scattered around the tented lodge. Inside the buildings there is energy efficient lighting which has a quick return on investment and the solar water heating system further assists the tented lodge in reducing their energy consumption. Waste separation practices are implemented at the tented lodge for all major waste types which is then taken away to the local recycling plant and the use of eco-friendly chemicals ensures that all waste water can be treated by their Bio-Rock system and successfully used elsewhere. The taps, toilets and showers are all fitted with energy saving aerators to ensure water use is efficient.
Gondwana Lodge Gondwana Lodge has energy efficient lighting throughout with geyser blankets installed to ensure no heat is wasted. The grey water recycling system is used in conjunction with their gardens to create beautiful grounds. Waste is also separated into the main recycling types with the addition of organic waste and together with the waste from the other lodges it is turned into compost. Efficient toilet systems are installed and only eco-friendly chemicals are used which once again shows the commitment of the staff to reduce their impact at the reserve. All these changes has resulted in Gondwana showing significant reductions in both energy and water usage.
Tilney Manor Tilney Manor is nestled between the hills which have provided its own challenges for the lodge. Geyser blankets and energy efficient lighting have helped the lodge reduce energy consumption. Waste water recycling aids in keeping the gardens beautifully green all year round and the waste is also separated into recyclables and non-recyclables before been taken to a nearby depot. Sanbona’s three certified lodges are a testimony that although we may be small in the bigger scheme of things, collectively we can make a difference if we take responsibility for our part of the world and its environmental footprint. These three treasures of relaxation are playing their part to ensure a sustainable legacy remains in South Africa.
