ITI Consumer News - Airport Surcharges

Submitted by:
{pp}Car rental clients reach the rental desk and are often confused at the barrage of charges added to their rental agreements. The most common query surrounds airport surcharges and tourism levies, and even though these two charges form only a small additional payment to your rental, they are additional charges nonetheless and warrant an explanation.

Airport surcharges differ according to the cost per rental. Airport surcharge is at a cost of 9% of the associated time and kilometers.

This charge is a compulsory charge required by the national airports, for the use of their premises for car rental business interests. Airport charges are only added to your rental agreement if you are renting your vehicle from a national airport branch, and will not be added in downtown locations. Tourism levies are paid directly to Tourism Marketing South Africa (TOMSA).

As per the industry standard, Hertz Rent a Car charges this levy at 1% of the total bill of time and kilometers. This levy contributes to the marketing and infrastructure services for the country, and is used for various initiatives as conducted by tourist association bodies.

In 2006 lone, over R60 million was collected to assist with the marketing of South Africa as a destination for international travel.

Both these compulsory additional charges are paid over in full to the respective collecting bodies, and do not in any way affect the profit of Hertz Rent a Car.
