Hoedspruit Endangered Species Centre Releases Cheetahs

Submitted by: The P.R Team Save to Instapaper

The Hoedspruit Endangered Species Centre (HESC) has released two female cheetahs - a mother (4 years old) and her daughter (2 years old) - which were successfully collared and released onto Camp Jabulani’s property in the Kapama Private Game Reserve.

The two female cheetahs were brought to HESC on 16 April 2011 due to an over population in the Mountain Zebra National Park outside Cradock in the Eastern Cape. They were placed in the Boma at HESC on 30 May 2012 and then released on 9 June 2012.  From a conservation point of view the release means that there are now two more cheetahs from a different gene pool which will allow for the new genes to help with the success of conserving this endangered species.

Comments Mrs Lente Roode: Founder of Hoedspruit Endangered Species Centre, “The successful release of the cheetahs all goes towards helping the management of the wild, working with nature. The Kruger National Park is a natural habitat to animals and the Hoedspruit Endangered Species Centre strives to bring the Kapama reserve, which was once a cattle and sheep farm, back to its original state”.

The cheetahs will be closely monitored over the next few weeks to establish their movements, eating habits and progress.
