Bee Beautiful at Kurland Hotel

Kurland Hotel, located in the Crags near Plettenberg Bay, a Relais & Châteaux member property, has recently become amateur ‘apiarists’, otherwise known as beekeepers.

Kurland has sourced three bee hives for the Estate, which are positioned by the lake, and will be the next phase of its eco initiatives adding to the existing organic herb and vegetable garden and soon to be completed ‘worm farm’. 

In charge of the bees is Glenda Lederle, Kurland’s Hotel Co-ordinator who has been on an extensive bee keeping course.

Comments Glenda, “In the future, once the bees have settled in, and the honey starts flowing, we plan to also add this initiative to our social responsibility program, ‘Mind the Gap’ by introducing beekeeping to the community so they too may benefit by creating home industries.”

For now the honey will be used at the Homestead restaurant and Katarina’s, and especially for breakfast and Kurland’s unique Café Complet high tea. In due course the honey will be sold in the Kurland boutique which will make the perfect gift for guests and public as a culinary memory from Kurland.
