School Holiday Road Trip? Most SA Drivers Don't Know What Their Car Insurance Covers at the Border
Written by: Pierre Theron Save to Instapaper
George, Western Cape — July 2026 — With thousands of South African families packing their cars for winter school holiday road trips to Namibia, Botswana, and Mozambique this month, free comparison service Compare Car Insurance (comparecarinsurance.co.za) is warning drivers that most don't fully understand what their policy covers — and what it doesn't — the moment they cross the border.
"We drove to Namibia as a family recently, and only thought to check our cover properly a few days before we left," said a spokesperson for Compare Car Insurance. "The assumption most people make is that if you have comprehensive cover in South Africa, you're fully covered in neighbouring countries. That's only partly true — and the gaps can be expensive."
The key findings from Compare Car Insurance's review of cross-border cover across major SA insurers
What IS typically covered: Most South African comprehensive policies extend accident, theft, and fire cover to SADC countries including Namibia, Botswana, Lesotho, Eswatini, Zimbabwe, Malawi, and Mozambique. Insurers including Auto & General, King Price, Budget Insurance, Dial Direct, First For Women, and OUTsurance all confirm SADC-wide comprehensive cover as standard — but with conditions.
What is NOT covered — and catches drivers off guard
Third-party liability is the biggest gap. Your SA comprehensive policy does not cover damage you cause to another person's vehicle or property outside South Africa. Most SADC countries — including Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, and Mozambique — require third-party insurance by law. Drivers must purchase separate cross-border third-party cover, either at the border post or in advance from outlets like Outdoor Warehouse. Without it, you are driving illegally in the destination country and personally liable for any damage you cause.
Breakdown and towing outside South Africa is typically excluded. If your car breaks down in Namibia or Botswana, you pay out of your own pocket to get the vehicle back to the South African border. Only once it is back in SA does your insurer's roadside assist and towing cover kick in. On a long Namibian trip, recovery costs from Etosha or Sossusvlei back to the nearest SA border can run to R15,000–R30,000.
Time limits apply. Some insurers cap cross-border cover at 30 days per trip, others at 60 or 90. Exceeding the limit without notifying your insurer can void your cover entirely — and most families planning a two-week trip don't think to check.
Mozambique requires a COMESA Yellow Card — a separate third-party insurance product valid across COMESA member states. Your standard SA cross-border third-party cover may not be accepted in Mozambique. The Yellow Card can be purchased at the Komatipoort/Ressano Garcia border post.
Documentation every driver needs
The service recommends drivers prepare the following before any cross-border trip: confirmation from your insurer that your policy covers the destination country and the duration of your trip; a cross-border letter from your insurer; a letter of authority from your bank if the vehicle is financed; separate cross-border third-party liability cover for the destination country; a SAPS police clearance certificate (strongly recommended for Namibia); and your original vehicle registration papers.
"The common thread is that people assume their insurer has it all covered. They don't — and finding out at the border post or, worse, after an accident in another country, is not the time to discover the gaps," the spokesperson said.
