Lowveld Mall’s R80m revamp wins SACSC Spectrum Award for retail design
The 31-year-old Hazyview shopping centre, owned and developed by Twin City, has scooped the Spectrum Award for Shopping Centre Development and won the Renovation/Expansion category at the South African Council of Shopping Centres’ (SACSC) Retail Design and Development Awards.
Designed by MDS Architects, the revamp draws inspiration from a “bushveld boutique lodge”, blending contemporary retail design with the natural character of the Lowveld while reinforcing the mall’s longstanding role in its community.
The SACSC judges unanimously selected Lowveld Mall for the overall Spectrum Award, recognising how strong design, delivered within tight budget parameters, created an improved customer experience and supported healthy returns.
From mall to destination
Now in its eighth iteration, Lowveld Mall has grown from around 9,000m² to more than 65,000m² over three decades. The latest upgrade, which was completed in early February 2026, introduced a new external food court and entertainment area, landscaped public spaces, an amphitheatre, children’s play facilities, a learning centre and distinctive design features reflecting the culture and natural character of the Lowveld.
Commenting on the award, Ryno de Leeuw, Twin City chief executive officer, says, “I’m incredibly grateful to the team, whose proactive asset management has ultimately been rewarded here. Both Groblersdal Mall and Lowveld Mall being recognised in the redevelopment category is a testament to the strategic decision that we took five years ago to continually challenge ourselves to create long-term value."
Twin City is a privately held property development, investment and asset management company established in 1984. It develops and retains properties for the long term, building lasting relationships and sustainable creating value.
