Capitec Expands Smart ID Application Service In Branches To Improve Access Across South Africa

Following a pilot phase, the service is now available in certain branches, with plans to expand to about 100 locations by mid-2026.
Capitec clients can apply for a Smart ID at self-service terminals in participating branches without making a prior booking. The application process is digital and integrated with the Department of Home Affairs’ systems. Applicants are notified when their ID is ready and can collect it from the branch.
According to Home Affairs minister Leon Schreiber, more than 4.4 million South Africans over the age of 16 do not have either a green ID book or a Smart ID card.
He said expanding access points for applications could reduce travel distances and queues for people needing identity documents.
The Department of Home Affairs currently operates 349 offices nationally, with 190 able to process Smart ID applications.
Capitec said its branch network will be used to support access to the service as the rollout expands.
The system used in the branches connects self-service terminals directly to Home Affairs systems, allowing applications to be submitted digitally.
The application fee is R150, which includes the standard Department of Home Affairs fee of R140 and a R10 service fee charged by Capitec.
