A hoard of entries from across the country were narrowed down to a Top 5 by public voting, as well as an expert panel of 5FM judges in each of the girls', boys' and co-ed categories, before a Top 3 battle took centre stage, says the radio station.
5FM says the winners were announced live on air.
The top performers in the 2025 #5FMWarCryChamps are:
Girls' Schools Category:
- Third Place: St Mary's School, Waverley
- Second Place: St Stithians Girls' College
- Winner: Jeppe High School for Girls
Boys' Schools Category:
- Third Place: Parktown Boys' High School
- Second Place: Northwood School
- Winner: St Stithians Boys' College
Co-Ed Schools Category:

- Second Place: Trinity House Centurion High School
- Winner: Redhill School
Each winning school took home R20 000 in cash, which they can either keep or use to support a charity of their choice, as well as a party featuring 5FM at their matric dance. That's R60 000 in total prize money and three parties, says 5FM.
"This competition is fast becoming the benchmark for school spirit in South Africa," says Masi Mdingane, Business Manager for 5FM and Good Hope FM. "The creativity, energy and unity shown by these young South Africans is truly something to celebrate. With Standard Bank passionately backing this powerful initiative, the championship has grown in every way, and we already know 2026 is going to be even bigger, louder and fiercer. 2025 has been our biggest year yet. 2026 promises to be off the charts. We'll be sure to keep a keen eye on socials for schools whose gees catch our attention throughout the year, especially those who dare to be bold."
"At Standard Bank, we believe the growth of our nation is linked to the prosperity of our young people, and we are here to support every step of their growth journey," concludes Tshiamo Molanda, Head of Youth and Mass Market PPBSA at Standard Bank.
