Eskom asks Nersa to approve 2027/28 tariff structure amid public consultation on proposed price increases

According to SABC News, Eskom is requesting permission to implement the third year of its multi-year price determination, which was decided in 2025.

According to Nersa’s Rhulani Mathebula, electricity pricing includes basic charges, service charges, and energy used.

Mathebula said stakeholders have been invited to submit their views on the tariff structure Eskom is proposing to use to charge for electricity in the 2027/28 financial year.

Mathebula said the request concerns how Eskom should structure those charges next year, after some earlier charges drew complaints.

This process allows South Africans to voice their views on how Eskom intends to structure electricity prices.

Mathebula says the energy regulator can only ensure that the pricing structure Eskom uses does not lead to double counting or charging consumers for services they were never meant to pay for.

“If Eskom had its way, you were probably going to be sitting at around 16 plus in terms of the percentage.”

Mathebula says the regulator disallowed billions of rand, mainly because some amounts were not due to the utility’s prudent operation.

MyBroadband reports that the public consultation focuses on whether Eskom’s proposed structure fairly recovers its already-approved revenue.

Those interested in submitting written comments have until 4pm on 2 October 2026.
