Hong Kong Trade Development Council Participation Package For South Africa

South Africa, renowned for its rich wine making heritage, diversity and their exceptional quality, has consistently led the way in promoting and presenting a wide range of South African wines to the global market. To further this mission, HKTDC cordially invites wineries in South Africa to participate in our annual flagship event Hong Kong International Wine and Spirits Fair (6-8 November 2025).

With the participation from global promotional bodies, Hong Kong International Wine & Spirits Fair is dedicated to all professionals for conducting business and exchanging marketing information. In 2024, the Fair gathered more than 600 exhibitors from 20 countries/regions and attracted over 8,200 buyers from 61 countries/regions. On the last day of the fair, the “Wine Fiesta” zone which opened to the public welcomed over 10,000 public visitors.

Since the removal of all duty-related customs and administrative controls on wines in 2008, Hong Kong has developed into a wine trading and distribution centre for the Asia Pacific region, particularly for mainland China. According to the Census and Statistics Department, export of wine to mainland China has experienced a 12.5% growth in the first eight months of 2024. In addition to wine trading and distribution, local wine‑related activities include auctions, retailing, warehousing, catering and transportation have been vibrant. In 2023, there were 800 establishments engaging in the import for wholesale of alcoholic drinks, up from 310 in 2008, while in the same period the number of specialised stores making retail sales of alcoholic beverages increased from 140 to 520. Thanks also to the surge in demand from Asian investors, Hong Kong has since 2009 become one of the largest wine auction centres in the world, according to Wine Spectator. The recent tax reduction on liquor, meanwhile, is expected to further fuel this growth and solidify Hong Kong’s role as a key wine and spirits distribution hub.

The fair will enable exhibitors to showcase their wine while connecting with consumers and international buyers to expand their business networks. By leveraging the fair as an effective promotional platform, South African wineries can establish country and brand image for the exquisite wines and wine regions.
