South African universities still accepting 2027 applications with deadlines from October to November 2026
The University of Johannesburg (UJ), Walter Sisulu University (WSU), University of Fort Hare (UFH), Sol Plaatje University (SPU) and University of Mpumalanga (UMP) are among the remaining institutions with application opportunities. The University of South Africa (Unisa) is also accepting applications for selected postgraduate qualifications.
While many universities closed their application windows between June and September, these remaining opportunities provide a lifeline for prospective students who may have delayed applying, reconsidered their study choices, or are still deciding on their next steps.
Which universities are still accepting applications?
University of Johannesburg (UJ)
The University of Johannesburg is accepting applications until 31 October 2026 at 12:00. Applications are free and can be completed online, making the process accessible to prospective students across the country. Applicants are encouraged to submit their applications before the deadline and ensure they meet the admission requirements for their chosen programmes.
Walter Sisulu University (WSU)
Walter Sisulu University is accepting applications from South African students until 31 October 2026. However, deadlines for Health Sciences programmes and international applicants have already passed. Prospective students should confirm programme availability before applying.
University of Fort Hare (UFH)
The University of Fort Hare remains an option for students hoping to enrol in 2027, with applications expected to close around 31 October 2026. Students are encouraged to confirm the final closing date directly with the university and submit their applications as soon as possible.
Sol Plaatje University (SPU)
Sol Plaatje University is another institution prospective students can explore for the 2027 academic year. Applicants should confirm which programmes remain open and their respective closing dates through the university's official admissions channels.
University of Mpumalanga (UMP)
The University of Mpumalanga offers one of the latest application deadlines, with applications remaining open until 30 November 2026. This gives prospective students additional time to explore available qualifications, prepare their supporting documents and submit their applications.
University of South Africa (Unisa)
While Unisa's undergraduate application period has closed, applications for master's and doctoral qualifications remain open until 20 November 2026, with different deadlines applying to selected qualifications. This provides an opportunity for graduates looking to further their studies in 2027.
Why it’s important to apply early
University admission is competitive, particularly for popular qualifications, and meeting the minimum admission requirements does not automatically guarantee placement.
Students should also remember that application deadlines can differ between faculties and programmes. Certain qualifications may close earlier than the university's general deadline, making it essential to confirm availability before submitting an application.
For current matriculants, applying before receiving their final results is particularly important. Universities generally assess applications using Grade 11 results or the latest available academic records, with final admission decisions depending on matric results and other programme requirements.
What happens if students miss the deadline?
Although most universities have already closed their applications, missing a deadline does not necessarily mean students must abandon their plans to study in 2027.
Some institutions may consider late applications where spaces remain available, while others offer alternative application processes after matric results are released. However, these opportunities are limited and should not be relied upon as a substitute for applying on time.
Prospective students can also explore Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges, alternative qualifications or opportunities to improve their matric results before applying for the following academic year.
Planning for the next step
As the 2027 application cycle approaches its final deadlines, the message to prospective students is clear: there is still time to apply, but the window is closing quickly.
It’s important for prospective students to research their preferred qualifications, check admission requirements and submit their applications through official university platforms as soon as possible.
For students who remain uncertain about their options, access to reliable information and early planning can make a significant difference in navigating the transition from school to higher education.
