The launch aims to address what the toy company sees as a gap in the local doll market, where many products continue to draw on European and American beauty ideals. Even dolls with darker skin tones are often based on designs originally developed around predominantly European features and straight hair.

Prima Toys also identified a divide in the market, with dolls reflecting African features often positioned at the lower-priced end. The company wanted to challenge this by developing a high-quality product with a distinctly South African identity.

"As a leading toy business in South Africa, we saw it as our responsibility to challenge that thinking with a high-quality product supported by a strong, locally relevant brand," says Paul Cook, CEO of Prima Toy and Leisure Trading.

Designed around natural hair and local identity

Rather than adapting an existing international design, Prima Toys developed Zazi with South African features in mind from the outset. Hair was a particular focus, recognising that brushing, braiding and styling are central to how many children play with dolls.

The development process took several months and involved numerous samples and refinements. The team worked closely with its manufacturing partner in China to get the hair textures and braided styles right.

"Teaching the factory how to create the braids was one of the greatest technical challenges. Each braid is completed by hand, making the hair an especially detailed part of the finished doll."

The Zazi Deluxe Doll is made from premium-quality vinyl, with soft facial features and hair that children can braid and style. Its understated outfits are designed to keep the focus on the doll's hair.

Prima Toys has also introduced Zazi & Friends, a smaller range featuring bold, colour-streaked hairstyles, bright outfits and individual personalities. Built around friendship and collectability, the range offers children more characters to explore within the Zazi brand.

A name rooted in self-identity

The launch builds on Prima Toys' experience in the doll category, which includes its previous Baby Love and Baby Angel brands. Although the company's local production facilities closed some years ago, the experience gained through those ranges helped inform the development of Zazi.

The brand name is inspired by ukuzazi, meaning "to know oneself". Prima Toys wanted a name with a distinctly South African connection, without associating the doll with one particular cultural identity.

"The name captured exactly what we wanted the brand to express. Know yourself, celebrate yourself and be proud of who you are," says Cook.

"That meaning has become the emotional foundation of the Zazi brand."

The company says the intention was to make representation part of the experience without losing sight of the fundamentals of play: a doll children enjoy spending time with.

Building the Zazi range

Both the Zazi Deluxe Doll and Zazi & Friends are now available through leading toy specialists and selected online retailers.

Prima Toys plans to develop additional characters and products as the brand grows, with future additions informed by how children and families respond to the initial ranges.

"We wanted to create a desirable, good-quality play doll in the first instance," Cook says.

"Confidence and representation are woven into that experience, but they never replace the essential ingredients of fun, imagination and play."
