At 15,000 rpm and 200km/h, there’s no room for guesswork. When superbikes thunder down the straight, every component must perform flawlessly. It’s not just about the rider’s skill. It’s also about the machine’s smallest parts.
Victory is built on precision and, at the heart of this precision sits something no bigger than your little finger: the spark plug.
The Critical Role Of Spark Plugs
Essentially, spark plugs ignite the air-fuel mixture inside the combustion chamber, driving the pistons and turning fuel into forward motion.
Simple in principle but critical in practice:
“Spark plugs make the fuel ‘explode’ in the engine, giving me the speed I need,” says King Price Xtreme superbike champion Clint Seller.
“If a spark plug doesn’t perform at 100% the bike will lose power, and this is why we rely on NGK.”
Seller explains that, in racing, engines operate under extreme heat, vibration, and sustained high revs, which means that the spark must be strong and precise. If it isn’t, performance drops immediately.
This loss can mean fractions of a second… But fractions decide podiums.
Engineered For Peak Performance
Willie Blignaut from NGK says that the difference between a standard plug and a high-performance one lies in its materials, durability, and efficiency.
“Our high-performance spark plugs are engineered to deliver a stronger, more consistent spark under extreme conditions. This translates into cleaner combustion and maximum power extraction from every drop of fuel.”
Importantly, quality spark plugs also improve throttle response to deliver smoother acceleration out of corners. This allows riders to push harder with confidence.
Proven On The Track
Seller knows the impact firsthand.
When the King Price Xtreme team first came together, crew chief Steve Cannon conducted back-to-back dyno tests comparing spark plug brands.
The results were clear: performance improved with NGK.
This extra horsepower may sound small but, in superbike racing, it’s decisive.
Seller says that, if you want to win, you have to use the best.
“With NGK providing the spark plugs for our bikes, and the backing of King Price Xtreme, we’re able to compete at the highest level.”
Why Every Rider Should Pay Attention
And while race bikes demand specialised components, the same principle applies to every rider.
Willie Blignaut says that spark plugs affect power, fuel efficiency and, critically, safety, and are as important as tyres.
Willie Blignaut also advises all riders to follow the bike manufacturer’s service schedules.
“Don’t guess and don’t substitute. Check your owner’s manual before replacing a spark plug. It’s a small part, but choosing the right one makes a big difference.”
A Small Part That Can Decide A Champion
Seller agrees:
“You can be the best rider in the world, but if your bike is slow or breaks down, you can’t be the champion.”
