SA Masters Surfing Championships Heads to Victoria Bay
Victoria Bay – The 2024 SA Masters Surfing Championships will take place this weekend in Victoria Bay. With five full days of surfing ahead, it will be an exciting weekend of surfing. The best masters surfers in the country will be surfing in the following divisions:
Men’s: Over 35, 40, 45, 50, 55, 60, 65.
Women’s: Over 35.
Victoria Bay
Victoria Bay is a prime right-hand point break and ideal for a national surfing event. It is consistent throughout the year, the wave itself is highly contestable, lending itself to high-performance surfing, and it is a very popular wave for competitive surfers nationwide.
At this event, the judges will look for commitment and degree of difficulty, innovative and progressive manoeuvres, a combination of major moves, variety, speed, power and flow.
Surfers competing in this event include a long list of former pros, champions, national team members and international title holders from across the country. David Weare, Greg Emslie, Sean Holmes, Noel Rahme, David Malherbe, Greg Swart, Andrew Carter, Grant Baker, Cass Collier, Lynne Mackey and Tash Mentasti, to name a few.

Previous Champions
All surfers competing in the SA Masters represent specific segments of the sport’s history in South Africa. Some have enjoyed great success in the sport, and others have enjoyed similar successes working for the surf industry. Some of these surfers take competition seriously, while some do the whole thing just for fun. Yet every competitor is part of the lineage, traditions, and culture of surfing in South Africa.
These surfers also inspire all the grom surfers starting their respective competitive journeys into the sport. To many of the younger surfers in the country, they are heroes and highly respected.
National Titles and The Masters Cup
The surfers compete for national titles in their age categories and the Masters Cup for the winning District. The districts of Cape Town Surfriders, Cape Winelands Surfriders, Eden Surfriders, Nelson Mandela Bay Surfriders, Buffalo City Surfriders, Ugu, eThekweni, and Ilembe Surfriders will compete in this event. The Dave Fish Trophy goes to the most consistent surfer over the entire event.
