To celebrate World Ocean Day next month, the highly anticipated Ocean Festival will be returning to Scottburgh, running from 5 to 8 June. Once again, this epic event will include a programme of clean-ups, talks, live music, sports and entertainment, with a new event this year – The Ocean Warriors National Series.
This year’s event is fully embracing the World Ocean Day theme of Catalyzing Action for Our Ocean & Climate with an action-packed line-up of events for this year’s Ocean Festival.
Barry Lewin, Event Organiser, commented: “We’re excited to welcome everyone back to Scottburgh on the KZN South Coast to celebrate World Ocean Day together as part of the 3rd annual Ocean Festival. This festival brings people together to celebrate our oceans through lifestyle, wellness, sport, education, and community outreach.
“This year, we’re bringing back our popular programme of events, with the addition of a lifesaving competition, The Ocean Warriors National Series, as a way to support and celebrate our incredible ocean warriors. We encourage everyone to save the date for this year’s festival, which has something for everyone to enjoy while honouring the ocean.”
Some of the festival highlights include the Leatherback Rum Aliwal Shoal Surfski Challenge which attracts several of the country’s top paddlers; beach, river, and reef clean-ups that bring all ages and communities together; as well as great entertainment from film screenings to live music.
The Ocean Festival celebrates World Ocean Day through:
1. Engagement: Encouraging a human connection with the ocean through fun outdoor events and activities.
2. Education: Talks about ocean health and raising awareness about its conservation.
3. Economics: Supporting ocean economies and local business in coastal towns by boosting tourism through the Ocean Festival events.
Winter in Scottburgh on the KZN South Coast is one of the best times to visit, with the subtropical climate making this a year-round outdoor destination. Scottburgh Beach, which has pilot Blue Flag status, is an exceptionally great beach for families, with a grassy embankment for relaxing, as well as great swimming, surfing, and diving.
