All Eyes On Long Beach for the Sea Harvest Cape Crown presented by Xcel Wetsuits
Submitted by: Craig JarvisLong Beach, Kommetjie – The best junior surfers in the country are eagerly anticipating the Sea Harvest Cape Crown presented by Xcel Wetsuits, which will take place over the weekend of 6-8 September.
It has been an exciting year for junior surfing in South Africa, with some great events blessed with excellent surf throughout the year, and it is only going to get more exciting now.
The year-end ratings are chosen on the best six out of nine events, and the Sea Harvest Cape Crown is event number eight out of nine. While some surfers are sitting in the pound seat on the ratings, it is very easy to make huge jumps in these ratings after one or two big results and the surfer's three worst results for the year are scrapped.
Surfers wishing to improve their ratings have been working hard with their training and coaching to prepare for Long Beach. The beginning of September is a good time for the waves at Long Beach, and history will show that September has good swell and favourable wind more often than not.
Long Beach is a fun and consistent beach break in Kommetjie and one of the rare waves offshore in southwesterly winds. This is the eighth edition of the Sea Harvest Cape Crown, and six of the previous seven events have been held at Long Beach in good to excellent conditions. Last year was the first year that the event had to move, as the Deep South got pummelled by a huge storm, forcing the event organisers to retreat to the shelter of Muizenberg Beach.
It offers lefts, rights, and A-frames and barrels, depending on the sandbar formation and the tide. The waves are conducive to high-performance surfing, and the best junior surfers will undoubtedly bring their A-games to Kommetjie for this tournament.
This event is so close to the end of the ratings season that it will be a full three-day event. Surfers are strongly encouraged to get their entries in as soon as possible. When the divisions are full, the entries will close.
The Sea Harvest Cape Crown is presented by Xcel Wetsuits and supported by the Western Cape Department of Culture, Arts and Sport. Cape Town Surfriders host it. The event offers U12, U14, U16 and U18 Boys and Girls Divisions.
The event will be on liveheats.com once the entries are closed.
