Brick By Brick KZN Skaters Step Into History At The Gauteng Inter-Provincial Championships

From 15 to 17 March 2025, the Gauteng Inter-Provincial Figure Skating Championships will take place at the Forrest Hill Ice Rink in Pretoria, bringing together skaters from across the country for a celebration of talent, development, and competitive excellence. For KwaZulu-Natal, this event represents far more than a championship—it marks a powerful milestone in a long and determined journey of rebuilding figure skating in the province.

In 2022, KZN had just one skater competing at an inter-provincial championship. In 2023, that number grew to two. Now, for the first time in six years, KZN will proudly send a team of ten athletes to compete in another province. This is a historic moment for KZN figure skating and a reflection of steady progress, long-term commitment, and belief in rebuilding the sport properly and sustainably.

Eight of the ten skaters competing completed the 2025 development programme — a structured initiative that transformed skaters from club-level participation into competitive athletes, building skills, discipline, confidence, and competitive readiness.

The Gauteng Stars of Tomorrow 2026 platform will allow young and emerging skaters to compete, pass tests, and showcase their skills. Representing this category for KZN are Alex Bothma from Amanzimtoti, who attends Athlone Park Primary School; Mzande Mduli from Pennington, a learner at Crawford College La Lucia International; and Letho Gwala from uMlazi, who attends Amanzimtoti Primary School. These young athletes represent the future of figure skating in the province.

In the championship category of the Competitive Solo Figure Skating Section, KZN will be represented in the Silver division by Cassidy Baker from Scottburgh, who is home schooled; Tanique Jansen, who attends Think Digital Academy; Amarah Peer from Durban, a learner at George Campbell School of Technology; Isabella Reyneke from Glenwood, who attends UCT Open School; and Mia Stannard from Amanzimtoti, a learner at Kuswag High School.

Competing in the Gold division are Ester Horne from Amanzimtoti, who attends Kuswag High School, and Zach Morgan from Jacobs, a learner at Genz Cyber Academy.

Building a province from the ground up, brick by brick, is a slow and systematic process. It takes time, structure, consistency, and vision. But moments like this show that the foundation is taking shape. For the first time in six years, KZN returns to inter-provincial competition as a team. This is not just a milestone — it is a symbol of renewal, growth, and hope.

Every skater and every parent is part of this journey, and together, we continue building a stronger future for figure skating in KwaZulu-Natal. SAFSA KZN is proud of every athlete and grateful to every parent who has supported this journey with patience, belief, and commitment.
