One of the province’s longest-running bowls tournaments returns to the KZN South Coast from 3 to 7 August 2026 – the 65th Scottburgh August Tournament. Supported by Renishaw Hills, the event is set to welcome hundreds of bowlers from around the country to compete across four local clubs for the top prize.
"Supporting community events like the Scottburgh August Tournament is an investment in the region and its people, and we’re delighted to be on board," said Barto van der Merwe, Managing Director of Renishaw Property Developments, a subsidiary of Crookes Brothers Limited.
"Bowls is one of the fastest-growing activities among our residents because it combines healthy outdoor activity with social interaction and friendly competition. We're particularly excited that Renishaw Hills will soon launch its own bowls green, creating even more opportunities for our residents while strengthening Scottburgh's reputation as one of South Africa's premier bowls destinations."
A tournament with 65 years of impact
Established in 1959, the August event showcases the region’s incredible appeal, even out of season. Visitors enjoy mild sunny weather while enjoying iconic winter attractions such as the humpback whale migration. This is a welcome boost to local tourism and a highlight on the calendar for many bowlers. More than six decades later, it continues to support local industry while remaining one of the country's largest club-run bowls tournaments.
Scottburgh Bowling Club organiser Peter Lawrence said the tournament is about friendship, fellowship and showcasing everything Scottburgh has to offer: “Every year, we welcome hundreds of bowlers, many of whom have been returning for decades and often bring new friends with them. It gives visitors the chance to experience our hospitality, discover the area as a retirement destination, and enjoy some outstanding bowls in a relaxed atmosphere."
Lawrence noted that the tournament also provides a vital economic injection into the region: "Over the week we expect between 300 and 400 visitors, filling accommodation, restaurants and shops during what is traditionally a quieter period. Keeping entry fees affordable is incredibly important, which is why sponsorship from community-minded organisations such as Renishaw Hills plays such an important role in ensuring the tournament continues to thrive."
