Vencasa Celebrates World Sleep Day 2019

Published: 04 March 2019

‘World Sleep Day 2019: ‘Healthy Sleep, Healthy Aging,’ Vencasa, The World Leaders in Sleep, celebrates World Sleep Day this 15th March 2019. This annual event focuses on one of our most basic needs. Sleep is crucial not only to our basic survival but to our overall health and well-being.Lack of sleep can lead to numerous long and short-term health problems, this means that the earlier you find the best sleep solution for your life-stage, the better!

The ideal sleep solution is a vital investment in you and your family’s lives. This year, World Sleep Day focuses on healthy sleep and its impact on healthy aging. Dr. Erik St. Louis, Co-Director of the Mayo Centre for Sleep Medicine in Rochester, Minnesota, says, “For most adults, getting 7 to 8 hours of sleep tonight might be the most important thing we can do to improve our future physical and mental health. Recent research has shown the importance of adequate amounts of sleep for brain health, since during sleep, the brain washes away toxins that can potentially damage the aging brain that accumulates during the day while we’re awake.

Sleep also keeps the brain’s wiring and connections healthy and working at their best, especially when learning and remembering new things”.Good quality sleep contributes to aging well – physically and mentally. Getting good sleep during youth and middle age reduces the risk of obesity and hypertension and even prevents against age-related cognitive decline and Alzheimer’s Disease later in life. Regular sleep has even been attributed to fewer signs of aging in facial skin and better tissue tone. Beauty sleep is not a myth! Emerging evidence also suggests a connection between premature cell aging and poor sleep. Sleep is our time to regenerate and recharge and we need to make the best of this time.

World Sleep Day reminds us to make quality sleep a high priority. Can you afford not to invest in the very best sleep solutions and technology available? Arianna Huffington, author of The Sleep Revolution: Transforming Your Life, One Night at a Time confirms, “Sleep is central to every aspect of our mental and physical health, and this is true at every age, from birth onward.

Vencasa – World Sleep Day 2018

Published: 13 March 2018

Vencasa celebrates World Sleep Day this 16th March 2018 as it brings awareness to the importance and pleasure of quality sleep. Sleep is our most basic need, crucial to our overall health and well-being. Lack of sleep can lead to numerous long and short-term health problems including heart disease, strokes and diabetes. In general, it leads to poor alertness, reduced concentration, low memory recall, and poor academic productivity.

‘Join the Sleep World, Preserve Your Rhythms to Enjoy Life,’ intends to emphasise the importance of circadian rhythms in healthy sleep, and inspired by the recent Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine assigned to three researchers who have dedicated their studies to circadian rhythms.

Circadian rhythms refer to cyclic events within the body such as rhythms in hormones, body temperature and alertness levels. Biological clocks from within the body produce circadian rhythms, but environmental factors such as sunlight also affect them. Preserving regular circadian rhythms have been found to lower the risk of sleep disorders, mental health disorders and chronic health issues such as obesity and diabetes.

  • Sound sleep is one of the three pillars of good health along with a balanced diet and regular exercise.
  • There are close to 100 disorders of sleep, but most are modifiable and manageable with the help of sleep specialists.
  • Individuals who get an entire night’s sleep without any interruptions experience lower rates of high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity and other chronic illnesses.

Arianna Huffington, formerly of The Huffington Post and author of The Sleep Revolution: Transforming Your Life, One Night at a Time states, “Sleep is the underpinning of our entire well-being. For centuries people thought that sleep was a time of inactivity, that the brain was resting. But all the new science proves that the opposite is true — that during sleep the brain is in a state of intense activity, which is necessary for us to fully recharge and be productive, creative and truly connect with ourselves and others during the day.”

CELEBRATING WORLD SLEEP DAY!

Published: 15 March 2017

World Sleep Day falls on Friday, March 17, and as usual, Hirsch’s have some fun, community driven, ideas up their sleeves to celebrate. Together with Cloud Nine and Rest Assured they have come up with an activation to see how many GRADE 4 learners can fit onto one queen size bed for at least 30 seconds. This will take place at Brakpan Primary school on the quad fields at 11:00am and the public are welcome to come along and watch the fun!

Commenting on the Activation, Chief Operations Officer of Hirsch’s, Margaret Hirsch said “Sleep is such an important part of our lives, particularly for young children. What we have found, when we visit underprivileged pre schools in the areas in which we operate is that sometimes the children don’t have anywhere to sleep during their lunch break-time. Most stay on until the evening when their parents pick them up, and that midday sleep is vital for them. Cloud 9 and Rest Assured have come on board with us to donate sponge mattresses for a pre-school of our choice. The school in the Hirsch branch catchment area that clocks up the most bodies on a bed are the winners and they get to nominate the pre-school to donate the sponge mattresses to. The Branch PRO’s are running with the competition, so contact the PRO at your nearest branch to find out what time the competition will take place.”www.hirschs.co.za
