Travel Insurance this festive season

Published: 30 November 2018

TRAVEL INSURANCE When you picture yourself travelling for business does it look like this: you and your brand new suitcase dashing elegantly through a foreign airport en route to freshen up at your five-star hotel before a successful client meeting? Or like this: you at the airport lost luggage counter, tears streaming down your smudgy cheeks, the reality slowly dawning that you’ll be meeting your most important client in a pair of grubby travel sweats?

Travel – for business or leisure or both (bleisure?) – can be extremely exciting. But it comes with its own set of risks. According to short-term insurer, Travel Insurance Consultants (TIC), a division of Santam, some of the most claimed for travel events are pre-existing medical expenses, cancellation of journey, luggage loss and travel delays. Being prepared for these risks is critical.

In a recent panel discussion, three travel industry experts - Monique Swart from African Business Travel Association (ABTA), Albie de Frey from The Travel Doctor and Jason Veitch from Travel Insurance Consultants (TIC) discussed all things travel insurance.

The experts suggest looking at the following aspects of travel insurance before hopping on that plane.

1. Credit card – know what it covers

There is a common misperception that your ‘free’ credit card cover will adequately insure you for all risks when travelling. And while it has its advantages, assuming that your credit card cover will pay out is not enough. You need to look into exactly what is covered by the credit card insurance and weigh up whether this is sufficient.

Veitch says that credit card insurance can be very specific and usually has a range of exclusions. “Typically, it excludes undeclared pre-existing medical conditions, which means that if someone suffering from diabetes has a medical event when they are abroad, they will not be covered. It is vital for anyone with a pre-existing medical condition to be adequately covered when travelling.”

He said this is but one example of where credit card insurance does fall short. Others include the low level of cover for medical incidences and accidents, no or low luggage cover limits, no cover in the event you need to cancel your entire holiday and cover for sporting activities.

2. Free travel insurance on your medical aid cover

Free travel insurance attached to your medical aid cover also sounds great, but again it is critical that you look carefully at how it is structured.  De Frey says that some medical aid travel insurance will pay out at South African medical aid rates. “Which may be adequate in some parts of the world, but in countries like the USA or France, where medical costs can be up to 15 or 20 times higher than South African ones, this is not going to be enough. Extra travel insurance can help avert an extremely expensive situation.”

3. Business trip? Are the ‘bleisure’ days also covered?

Often business trips have a day or two of leisure tacked on to them. Swart says that if the trip has been insured by the company it is important to investigate whether the days of leisure are also covered by the policy for the trip.

“Often a family member may join you and, in that case, additional insurance will most likely be necessary because they are not a company employee. The onus should be on the travellers to investigate the insurance offered by the employer to ensure that all aspects of the trip are covered for all parties travelling,” she says.

4. Corporates: know the health of your employees

With medical preconditions excluded by many insurance policies – unless declared – it is vital that employees travelling are open and honest with their employers about any such conditions.

Veitch says it is vital that corporates not shirk responsibility in this regard. “Employers need to make sure that they have frank conversations about declaring medical preconditions with employees before they travel. If something does happen connected to an undeclared medical condition, it can end up being extremely costly, and it may result in the expenses not being paid by the insurer. Transparency is vital – and so is ensuring an insurance policy that covers the precondition is in place.”

5. Travelling in high risk areas: make sure kidnapping/ransom and malaria are well covered

“When travelling to high risk areas, the necessity for travel insurance is even more important. In countries where malaria is prevalent, both preventative treatment and extremely good medical cover are vital. In Africa, this is particularly important, as the preventative programs that have previously been implemented in various African countries to reduce malaria have been curtailed, which means incidences of malaria are now increasing at an alarming rate” according to de Frey.

And some countries in Africa and the Middle East have heightened kidnapping and ransom risks, so cover for these is vital. “And making every attempt to remain trackable via tech when you are in these countries is also a very good idea.”

Badplaas, A Forever Resort boasts with new Hydro and Spa

Published: 11 June 2018

Badplaas, a well-known treasure within the Forever Resorts South Africa portfolio has recently spent millions on the upgrade of their Hydro and Spa facility. This upgrade has been on the books for the past two years and upgrades begun in October 2017 with the official construction commencing in January 2018. On the 26th of March the Coffee Shop which also underwent a total renovation along with the Hydro re-opened. The Spa re-opened two days later, on the 31st of March 2018. The official exclusive launch of the Hydro and Spa took place yesterday, 7 June 2018 and was attended by elite guests and VIPs including Honourable MEC Eric Kholwane and Executive Mayor Councillor Nkosi of Chief Albert Luthuli Municipality.

Sandra Rath from the South African Association of Health and Skincare Professionals (SAAHSP) and from SDV Pharmaceuticals who attended the exquisite launch of the Badplaas Hydro and Spa said that the Spa industry in South Africa is still showing growth regardless of the Economic climate. “Being in the industry for the past 30 years, I can only say that the standard of this Spa exceeds expectations in all aspects. From ambiance to style, staff to treatments, this Spa is a must experience”, Rath added.

The new buzz word, “Hydro”Hydro’s are often confused with Jet Baths and Jacuzzis. The reason for this is two common  elements, water and pulsing jets. A Hydro is however a treatment rather than an experience, an underwater massage which stimulates your body’s blood circulation. Over and above that, the water is warm therefore it opens pores cleaning your skin leaving you feeling refreshed. The Hydro assists with the treatment of stiff, sore muscles and joints by focusing on typical problem areas such as your neck, back, legs and limbs. It is for this reason that Hydro treatments are often recommended with products and treatments maximising the benefits.

What makes the Badplaas Hydro and Spa unique? There are only a few resorts in South Africa that can boast with natural warm water springs – Badplaas is one of those select few. The spring water is filled with a variety of 32 natural minerals. This water is them pumped into the Hydro pools, from the Hydro pools the water is pumped into the heated pool outside, from there the water is distributed to the other pools on the property cooling down as it travels from one pool to the other. The spring water is also used in the spa for various water based treatments offered at Badplaas.

The Spa has Specialist Therapists who take care of the needs of customers individually in tranquil and beautiful surroundings. The relaxation area consists of a 12 seat sauna and relaxation pool with spring water. The Spa offers a range of Facial and Specialised Facial Treatments, Brow and Lash Treatments, Massage Therapy, Specialised Body Treatments, Hand and Foot Therapy, Nail Treatments, Waxing and even kiddies treatments including Facials, Massages, Manicures and Pedicures.

The origin of the springsHot springs in South Africa originates from seepage-water that joins a subterranean water system, the more the water sinks the warmer the mineral water gets. If the mineral water moves fast enough it can still be hot when it moves back to the earth’s surface.  Mineral water contains a large amount of trace elements such as sodium, chloride and fluoride; however the mineral water’s chemical compound will differ from one source to the next. The spring water mainly consists of surface water (rain and snow) seeping through layers of rock which contain the minerals, as the water moves between these rocks its trace elements are dissolved by the water before it moves back to the surface of the earth.

The spring water at Badplaas rises from approximately 4300 metres below the earth’s surface. The spring itself has a capacity of 34 000 litres of mineral water per hour and a water temperature of 53˚C. A rift valley from Badplaas to the Swaziland Spa in Mbabane has formed in the earth’s crust causing hot bubbles at various places in this valley’s trail.

BLOG – Travel is not for sissies

Published: 16 January 2018

I like to be in charge of my life and my decisions and no more so than when it comes to booking online for family holidays, a business trip or some ‘me’ time, but then I found myself stuck at an airport in a foreign country – I had travelled here on business and had the family join me for an extended holiday - when our flight home was grounded due to bad weather and there I stood like a deer in headlights, unsure of what to do, who to call or how to get out of there.

Chaos surrounded us as other weary travellers scurried about trying to make alternative plans, shouting at their cellphones (and their kids), standing in ever-growing queues to try and get on another flight, being jostled and shoved.  I could not get a hold of an online agent or help desk as the lines were busy – 20 minutes of listening to an automated voice message did not help either, I had no-one to call to help me with at least a hotel for the night, or alternative travel arrangements and it dawned on me that had I given up my ‘independence’ and booked through an agent, I would not have been literally stranded, with my kids tugging on my jacket and my wife giving me ‘I told you so’ look.

Regardless of the reasons for taking a trip, be it a holiday to rejuvenate after a long, hard year, a business trip or conference, or just a long journey to anywhere to connect with yourself or with your loved ones - travel these days is not for sissies!

Terror attacks, natural disasters, airport closures and theft are concerns for each and every person embarking on a trip and regardless of how much planning and thought has been put in, from travel insurance (a must) to back-up plans, photocopies and contact people, if you have booked the trip yourself online and possibly forgotten a few must-haves on your to-do list, need information fast, or you get stuck in a City with literally no way out, who can you call?

It’s well worth it to spend a nominal service fee and book via a travel agent for peace of mind when travelling for business or leisure knowing you have someone to call who will take care of EVERYTHING in a crisis, or even just to say thank you, make a change to your itinerary or extend your stay.  Not only can your travel agent negotiate competitive prices on air fares, they can also in some instances secure corporate rates for hotels and car hire.  They can also manage your corporate travel budget and save you additional time and money by arranging car hire, the best insurance, collecting visas, booking transfers and being that 24/7 go-to person in a sticky situation.

 Next time!

Safe travels…

Luggage is getting smarter says Samsonite

Published: 24 August 2017

Today’s world is in a state of perpetual motion – and luggage is getting smarter, stronger and lighter, according to Samsonite Europe President, Arne Borrey on a recent trip to South Africa.

As the world’s largest travel luggage company, Samsonite has a legacy of trendsetting travel solutions. “Brand loyalty is import but what’s also crucial is how well brands fulfil the needs of consumers. Samsonite has the incredible strength of research and development behind its brands. Out of the 10 innovations in luggage over the past 15 years, we’ve had nine. As a result, investment in development has yielded products that are strong and light - and that’s what the consumer wants.”

Proof of that is Samsonite’s revolutionary Curv® material which is exclusive to the brand.

This next generation composite is made from highly drawn polypropylene rather than the conventional polypropylene favoured by its rival brands and unites the functional versatility of thermoplastics and the impact-resistant performance of a fibre-reinforced composite.

Five times stronger than conventional materials, it delivers a suitcase that is light and durable, has high impact resistance even at low temperature and is less sensitive to scratches and damage.

“We have invented this new market segment of pressure formed woven polypropylene that sells well in South Africa. If you a long haul traveller, you want to be really sure about the protection of your goods. Curv based products like Samsonite’s Cosmolite collection are perfect for that,” he said.

Borrey said that the starting point for Samsonite’s innovation team was unpacking exactly what consumers wanted.

“You have to understand trends and stay ahead of them – and then you also need to drive the trends. For starters, we need to know how fast a consumer will replace his or her suitcase. Millions of our suitcases were sold during the nineties. Because they are strong and well made, people could still travel with them. The big question is, do they want to? Technology and fashion have evolved and they want different shapes and forms now,” he explained.

Innovations could soon come to market include built in scales that will tell the traveller how much a suitcase weighs or a capacity meter that would indicate whether a half, a third or all of the volume has been utilised.

Telemetry tags will help solve the perennial bugbear of lost suitcases.

According to Borrey, in 2015, 23.1 million pieces of baggage were mishandled (either temporarily or permanently lost) worldwide.

Earlier this year, Samsonite announced that it was working closely with Vodafone to develop an innovative luggage tracking solution called Track&Go™. The technology partners are currently trialling a new longer battery life, wider range technology called Narrowband-IoT (NB-IoT) that can be easily and privately tracked by its owner.

This Track&Go solution is based on two principles - proximity alerts and geolocation. A traveler instantly receives a smartphone notification when a bag moves out of range. This is ideal for cruise, bus or train passengers wishing to leave their suitcases in a compartment. If a bag is lost, a traveler will be able to see its current location so that it can be traced.

TUMI, a top end luggage brand that Samsonite acquired in August 2016, will take this into the air travel arena.

Borrey said that he is currently travelling with a Tumi luggage locator that will launch later this year. This informs the passenger whether a suitcase has been loaded on to a plane. When the plane takes off, the acceleration turns the device off. On landing, the deceleration reactivates the device.

“You have to give your suitcase a name online. It then sends you a message to say that it has arrived at the destination,” he said.

He added that there was growing stream of innovation in the luggage space - including power assisted wheels similar to those used on bicycles.

“If you look at the business traveller, one of the worst things that can happen is to not have enough power for your tools. Suitcases and laptop bags could have built in solar panels or power packs so that you can charge your phone or your laptop. We are looking at how you could put solar panels or power banks inside business bags without making them too expensive and too heavy.”

Borrey said the jury was still out on what innovations consumers would find most useful.

But one thing’s for sure – all new innovations will be sensitive to safety and security and comply with all airline regulations. He said that Samsonite worked closely with bodies such as IATA to ensure the best possible solutions.

When it comes to aesthetics, Borrey said Samsonite was going all out to solve the ultimate business traveller challenge – creating a business bag for the growing number of female executive that are travelling between boardrooms.

“Even today, we still sell mostly male oriented business bags. Many women put their computers in their handbags. That makes them awfully heavy and they’re not make for that,” he noted.  Meanwhile, Samsonite has just launched a stylish range of women’s business cases – Zalia by Samsonite. More business cases for women are coming – especially now that the TUMI brand was on board, he added.

Another important new trend is the personalisation of luggage. TUMI shops worldwide – including the one in Johannesburg – allow customers to put their initials or symbols on their luggage and bags. They choose the font and the colour and it is done in store as an incentive to purchase.

Is your passport travel-ready?

Published: 19 June 2017

If you’re planning on jetting off into the sunset over the coming school holidays, make sure your passport is in order. That’s the advice of Konrad Laker, CEO of Gold Travel, a Cape Town-based corporate travel service specialist. According to Konrad, many travellers are not aware of passport requirements that could turn a dream overseas holiday into a nightmare.

In order to avoid complications at international destinations, refusal of entry into a country or, in some cases, deportation, it is essential that:

  • Passports must be valid for six months after your return date
  • At least four blank pages must be available for passport control and customs
  • Your passport name must correlate with your travel documents – in some cases a married woman’s name change from maiden to married surname can cause complications
  • Passports of minors must be updated and recognizable with a recent photograph

Konrad notes that certain countries such as The USA, United Kingdom and The Middle East are more stringent than others and travellers should make certain that all of their travel documents comply. “With many immigration offices on high alert following terror attacks across Europe, better to be safe than sorry,” advises Konrad.

Gold Travel gets a new look

Published: 27 March 2017

GOLD TRAVEL GETS A NEW LOOK Time to shine

Gold Travel, a corporate travel management company and industry stalwart, revealed a new look and image on 1 March 2017.  The company is one of Cape Town’s longest-standing corporate travel companies with a track record of over 40 years in the industry.  They are currently updating their website and internal processes and procedures to provide a more efficient, professional and personalised experience for their clients.

Konrad Laker, CEO of Gold Travel, says, “We took an honest look at the way we do things and decided it was time for a change - we want to show our clients that we are adapting but within a given framework – we are the same people, but doing business a little differently and a whole lot better.  As a small business, it is possible for us to do more; to go the extra mile.”

This rebrand comes in line with the opening of a second Gold Travel branch in Centurion and further expansion plans are under way for a third branch in Midrand, Gauteng. The company is also eager to extend their footprint into Africa as their portfolio covers a lot of travel to the likes of Nigeria, Ghana and Kenya, and many of their clients have offices in those countries.

Laker believes that the travel service industry should be embracing technology rather than resisting it; ‘we want to revolutionise the way we do business and challenge the norm, while keeping our personal focus on our clients and their needs. With adopting new systems and technology the idea is for Gold Travel to duplicate the formula so that it can be rolled out to all new branches, a kind of “plug-and-play” scenario, creating a seamless transition for both client and consultant.
