Africa's first association for visitor experiences and attractions launches!

Published: 15 March 2019

The only association for visitor experience and attraction professionals, the African Association of Visitor Experiences and Attractions (AAVEA), celebrated its inception with a digital media launch on Wednesday, 6 March 2019.

At the fifth annual Attractions Africa conference last June, Sabine Lehmann announced the intention to launch an association focussed on unifying and elevating the attractions sector, and raising awareness about the contribution that attractions and visitor experiences make to the broader tourism industry. In November 2018, based on the success of five Attractions Africa conferences, AAVEA was formed.

A first for the continent, AAVEA is a membership-driven association, governed by a board, which offers the only educational opportunities for visitor experience and attraction professionals in Africa. At its annual conference, AAVEA members and others in the attractions sector will learn, network, share, and seek solutions together.

Lehmann, founder of AAVEA and a thought leader in the attractions sector with 25 years of experience in the tourism industry, heads up the new AAVEA Board as its president. She is thrilled about the launch of the association and the impact it will have on the broader tourism industry:

“Visitor experiences and attractions play an important role in the tourism economy and are often the reason people choose to visit a city or region in the first place. Through AAVEA and our conference, we hope to raise the profile of attractions within the tourism industry, be the voice of the attractions sector, and contribute to the quality of attraction and visitor experience management,” says Lehmann.

In another exciting feat for AAVEA, the International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions (IAAPA) has recognised the association as its African representation in its Europe, Middle East, and Africa division, now known as IAAPA EMEA.

“Attractions Africa, now AAVEA, has been instrumental in the growth of the attractions industry in Africa. We are excited to work with them to strengthen our presence in the continent. We, as IAAPA EMEA, look forward to co-hosting with AAVEA our Institute for Attraction Managers training course that will be held in Cape Town in the latter part of 2019, and our global leadership forum in South Africa in early 2020”, says Jakob Wahl, Vice President and Executive Director of IAAPA.

Join us at the 2019 Annual Conference:

Attractions Africa, now AAVEA, will hold its fifth annual conference (AAVEA 2019) on 21 and 22 August 2019 in Cape Town.

The conference is a two-day event especially designed for visitor experience and attraction professionals. The programme comprises international speakers sharing trends, benchmarks, and best practice, as well as local examples of excellence, case studies, and white papers presented by local attraction and visitor experience professionals.

Conference registration for AAVEA 2019 will open in April 2019  and AAVEA members enjoy special discounted pricing.

New e-book spills the secrets for growing hotel occupancy!

Published: 24 September 2018

The world over, hotels, guesthouses and B&Bs are struggling to grow in the face of exploding competition from Airbnb. They are finding marketing more expensive, and more technical, and commissions to Online Travel Agencies more prohibitive. Now two seasoned experts have come to the rescue, with a downloadable e-book packed with insider hints and hacks. In workbook form, “How to Digitally Grow Your Hotel Occupancy” takes you step-by-step through the fastest, most powerful ways to use digital platforms for business growth.

The workbook was developed by Karen Parkin, who led the globalization of the Marriott International hotel site, and has taken independent guesthouses to 90%+ occupancy. She says “We want to share the secrets of success with hospitality business owners who normally can’t afford the time or fees to attend one of our corporate workshops. In just a hundred pages of explanation, examples and exercises, they will save time, save money, and grow their business, without having to be a geek.”

There’s a lot of surprisingly powerful stuff in this book. For example, it shows you how to dominate the screen space of a search engine results page. And it explains how to automatically turn anyone’s link to your website in social media into a powerful free advertisement, complete with a photo and action button.

Her co-author is Godfrey Parkin, author of “Doing Business Digitally” and “Digital Marketing” and leader of Britefire’s Startup Workshop.  He says that most hospitality businesses are appallingly badly marketed, so it is not hard to beat them if you simply do the right things and do them well. “We wanted to focus on only those things which most hotels get wrong, but which give you a huge sales boost if you do them right. We explain these concepts simply and provide step-by-step instructions which even a newcomer to digital can follow. The book is available on Amazon. But for the next couple of weeks you can download it from Britefire.com for the price of a couple of cappuccinos!” he said.

At last, there is a streamlined guide which explains the concepts in language a hotelier can get excited about. It lays out the route to rapid business success in a series of simple exercises. This book was designed to become fundamental to your marketing thinking. It could forever change the way you do business. Download it at www.bit.ly/HotelOccupancy

Badplaas, A Forever Resort boasts with new Hydro and Spa

Published: 11 June 2018

Badplaas, a well-known treasure within the Forever Resorts South Africa portfolio has recently spent millions on the upgrade of their Hydro and Spa facility. This upgrade has been on the books for the past two years and upgrades begun in October 2017 with the official construction commencing in January 2018. On the 26th of March the Coffee Shop which also underwent a total renovation along with the Hydro re-opened. The Spa re-opened two days later, on the 31st of March 2018. The official exclusive launch of the Hydro and Spa took place yesterday, 7 June 2018 and was attended by elite guests and VIPs including Honourable MEC Eric Kholwane and Executive Mayor Councillor Nkosi of Chief Albert Luthuli Municipality.

Sandra Rath from the South African Association of Health and Skincare Professionals (SAAHSP) and from SDV Pharmaceuticals who attended the exquisite launch of the Badplaas Hydro and Spa said that the Spa industry in South Africa is still showing growth regardless of the Economic climate. “Being in the industry for the past 30 years, I can only say that the standard of this Spa exceeds expectations in all aspects. From ambiance to style, staff to treatments, this Spa is a must experience”, Rath added.

The new buzz word, “Hydro”Hydro’s are often confused with Jet Baths and Jacuzzis. The reason for this is two common  elements, water and pulsing jets. A Hydro is however a treatment rather than an experience, an underwater massage which stimulates your body’s blood circulation. Over and above that, the water is warm therefore it opens pores cleaning your skin leaving you feeling refreshed. The Hydro assists with the treatment of stiff, sore muscles and joints by focusing on typical problem areas such as your neck, back, legs and limbs. It is for this reason that Hydro treatments are often recommended with products and treatments maximising the benefits.

What makes the Badplaas Hydro and Spa unique? There are only a few resorts in South Africa that can boast with natural warm water springs – Badplaas is one of those select few. The spring water is filled with a variety of 32 natural minerals. This water is them pumped into the Hydro pools, from the Hydro pools the water is pumped into the heated pool outside, from there the water is distributed to the other pools on the property cooling down as it travels from one pool to the other. The spring water is also used in the spa for various water based treatments offered at Badplaas.

The Spa has Specialist Therapists who take care of the needs of customers individually in tranquil and beautiful surroundings. The relaxation area consists of a 12 seat sauna and relaxation pool with spring water. The Spa offers a range of Facial and Specialised Facial Treatments, Brow and Lash Treatments, Massage Therapy, Specialised Body Treatments, Hand and Foot Therapy, Nail Treatments, Waxing and even kiddies treatments including Facials, Massages, Manicures and Pedicures.

The origin of the springsHot springs in South Africa originates from seepage-water that joins a subterranean water system, the more the water sinks the warmer the mineral water gets. If the mineral water moves fast enough it can still be hot when it moves back to the earth’s surface.  Mineral water contains a large amount of trace elements such as sodium, chloride and fluoride; however the mineral water’s chemical compound will differ from one source to the next. The spring water mainly consists of surface water (rain and snow) seeping through layers of rock which contain the minerals, as the water moves between these rocks its trace elements are dissolved by the water before it moves back to the surface of the earth.

The spring water at Badplaas rises from approximately 4300 metres below the earth’s surface. The spring itself has a capacity of 34 000 litres of mineral water per hour and a water temperature of 53˚C. A rift valley from Badplaas to the Swaziland Spa in Mbabane has formed in the earth’s crust causing hot bubbles at various places in this valley’s trail.

The Rhinos are Coming!!! Rhinos Paint The Town Red at V&A Waterfront and Cape Town International Airport!

Published: 19 January 2018

Eight gorgeous life-sized Rhino sculptures are wowing the crowds at the V&A Waterfront and Cape Town International Airport this January through to February 2018.

The Rhinos Are Coming!!! have announced that their Sponsors’ Rhinos are getting fantastic exposure in the many places they have been since they embarked on their Great Rhino Roadshow in April 2017. The main event is the three-month long world-class outdoor art exhibition which will be coming to Cape Town from mid-December 2018 to mid-March 2019. It will feature 60 or more life-sized painted Rhino sculptures which will be exhibited on street corners, parks and public spaces all around the city centre and surrounds. The exhibition will raise funds and spread awareness for the plight of South Africa’s endangered rhinos.Talented artists from our local communities transformed the first nine pioneer life-sized blank Rhino sculptures into valuable works of art.

Eighteen Sponsors have already signed up. The City of Cape Town supports this initiative by enabling Art Rhinos to be exhibited at many of the most-visited iconic tourism sites in Cape Town. The first nine painted Rhinos are already creating huge exposure for their Sponsors with the Sponsor’s brand name and mission statement emblazoned on a plaque attached to the heavyweight base on which the Rhinos are anchored.  These famous, as well as up and coming artists volunteered to paint the pioneer Rhinos: Beezy Baily, Lionel Smit, Nardstar*, Jade Waller, Nasser Zadeh, Peter Gray, Andrew Hart Adler, Clair Homewood and the children of the Lalela Project.

These Rhino ambassadors have already been doing the rounds at well-visited events such as the 2017 Gartner Symposium held at the CTICC, where they were hosted by MTN Business SA. The Rhinos started on their travels with their spectacular presence at the Cape Town Stadium for five days by the invitation of the Organisers of the We Are Africa conference in August 2017. Then they moved to Spier for three days. The ‘Penguin Rhino’ is gracing the entrance to The Two Oceans Aquarium. The other four can be seen at the Flag Pole and the Watershed areas located inside of the V&A Waterfront.

The Radisson Hotel Group have been using their Rhino since December 2017 to be on display at the entrances to their various hotels during the run-up to the Exhibition in December 2018, enhancing their social media and PR presence. These first nine Rhinos were sponsored by The One & Only Hotel, Belmond Mount Nelson Hotel, The Radisson Hotel Group, African Secrets, Timeless Africa Safaris, The Alphen Boutique Hotel, Welgevonden Game Reserve, Motswari Game Reserve and Pamela Isdell, in her private capacity. Janice Ashby, Founder of The Rhinos Are Coming!!!!, is appealing to organisations and individuals to get involved by sponsoring a Rhino. There are great marketing benefits for sponsors.

The Rhinos are Coming!!! Exhibition will promote Cape Town as a top tourist destination and an international centre for the arts. It will offer local artists the opportunity to showcase their work to an audience of hundreds of thousands while inviting the general public to join the war on poaching and to save our rhinos. In the first quarter of 2018, eight of these uniquely painted sculptures will make their appearances at The Cape Town Carnival on Saturday 17 March and at the World Travel Market Conference at the CTICC from 18 – 20 April.

Youth Entrepreneur Nadav Ossendryver Game-Changing In the Tech World, Driving Millions and Making Waves at Silicon Valley

Published: 19 September 2017

SA Youth attracts over half a billion people to his YouTube channel, driving tourism and giving our national parks an Edge.  With You Tube already a partner on his channel and Facebook profiling him as a case study, the world is  Nadav Ossendryver's oyster.

The 22 year is fast making tracks globally with Forbes listing him as one of the most influential people to look out for under 30.  Thanks to What’s On Your Plate, a new series that highlights young entrepreneurs, innovators and influencers who are shaping the future; more South Africans will get to hear about him.

On our second season of Bunnies in the Burbs: What’s On Your Plate; a JT Comms offering hosted by Wits student and youth entrepreneur Taynita Harilal, about sharing positive solutions of how a new generation of innovators are using technology and providing solutions to so many of the continents problems like job creation, nation building.

'We’re using our digitally enabled platforms to connect and amplify important, inspiring narratives that ordinary South Africans are creating to offer extraordinary solutions. Profiling Nadav in our Bunnies in the Burbs kitchen is an eye opener of how simple it can be sometimes to innovate without using any funds, working with what you have and building on one's passion. It's these kinds of stories that we believe can impact and influence how we use technology to create new futures." says Taynita Harilal.

Nadav Ossendryver has built one of the biggest YouTube followings in the country with his real-time wildlife-spotting service, Latest Sightings.  Latest sightings is a verifiable hit within the global wildlife and conservation community, with users not only being able to watch videos, but because of its crowd-sourcing model, can post their own encounters with nature and wildlife. Thousands of people around the world watch the live sightings and it's this kind of traction that Ossendryver's app is driving in profiling SA. His channel to date boasts more than half a billion views and has 537,969 subscribers.  The Latest Sightings app was named one of the Top 5 Most Innovative Apps for Culture and Tourism in the world at the World Summit Award (WSA) Innovation Congress, and Ossendryver was named one of Africa's Most Promising Entrepreneurs on the Forbes list for under 30’s for 2016.  Ossendryver's obsession with wildlife began when he was just eight-years-old, however it was only in 2011, when was 15, that he launched his first wildlife-spotting YouTube channel, Kruger Sightings, after a family holiday to the Kruger National Park. The channel was an instant success.

"It was one of those small YouTube channels and my first video ever, actually went viral," Ossendryver says. This was despite some misgivings from the wildlife community about the possible interference of social media.  "At the time, that was the only way to get the community going. I couldn't think of any other way and I wanted people to know about this so they could share their sights, and because it's online, it's instant. In the past a lion could be a kilometer from you and you would have no way of knowing it."

Ossendryver, who is currently studying for a B-Com degree part-time, has taken his influence beyond YouTube.  He has capitalised on the channel's success, launching a website and app, and together with social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, updates wildlife enthusiasts on where interesting animals and birds can be spotted. The service also provides Kruger National Park accommodation recommendations and specials.

With Tourism Month in full swing, the South African National Park (SANParks) is once again opening its doors for free for South African National Parks Week from Monday, 18 September until Friday, 22 September. The initiative is part of the annual South African National Parks Week. The campaign is held under the running theme ‘Know Your National Parks’ and allows locals, with valid identity documents, a chance to spend a day at a national park of their choice free of charge."Only when I finished matric, had I realised that this community is so big and I decided let's try and monetise it so I could do something I love forever and I could make a living off it. So the monetisation kind of started in the past two years and YouTube and the media around it is a big part of it."  Ossendryver has also partnered with Tendopro, an online education platform to provide wildlife courses to students, particularly those in rural and poverty-stricken areas.  For media queries, media accreditation, interview requests and to access high resolution pictures contact JT Comms on This email address is being protected from spambots. Webtours Group announces new website for Just Ski

Published: 17 August 2017

Webtours, Durban, South Africa Webtours, which assists South African travellers book affordable travel packages across the globe, have recently revamped its www.justski.co.za website to better represent special packages from the top ski operators around South Africa. Webtours, an online travel agency, has been in operation since 2007 with a group of niche travel websites serving the different international destinations and packages which are favoured by South African overseas holiday and honeymoon options.

Justski was launched today (17th of August 2017) and now offers a more diverse range of ski holidays featuring France, Italy, Switzerland, Austria, China and even Dubai. The Webtours Group and Justski have partnered with the leading South African ski operators and the old website was no longer a clear representation of all the packages and holidays that they had on offer. The new website offers a more uncluttered design with better functionality which enables visitors to find the best ski package suited to their needs and make more informed decisions. The old website was also outdated and was difficult to keep up-to-date.

The new Justski website will allow us to make quick edits. Currently we are experimenting with an API integration which some of our other websites enjoy and hope to add this to Juskski in the upcoming months.

We are very excited to revamp our Justski website as we achieved top growth for Club Med ski holidays last season and with the new website we can now expand our services offerings across the board and continue the growth of the business.  - Edwina Fletcher

Selling our great country, South Africa

Published: 05 March 2017

The tourism industry in South Africa has taken a lot of hits, especially since the Apartheid era arrived. Through all of this, tourism in South Africa has grown and it's up to us to keep feeding South Africa's biggest asset, it's natural beauty, culture and people. Viva South Africa, Viva Tourism! Lets start at the beginning, Apartheid. It was the first real issue South Africa was facing in regards to tourism going down the drain.

Many countries were boycotting South Africa, affecting thousands of local businesses and putting a huge red sticker on our country that basically said: "Do not enter!". We survived, we made it to 1994, a glorious year for all South Africans.

Tourism gained some traction, but not long after 1994, the country was yet again avoided due to high crime rates and general violence taking place all over South Africa. Flights were also extremely expensive to any South African airport due to airlines cutting down on daily flights to South Africa. Our country received a rough estimate of less than 1 million arrivals at international airports. It was a devastating time for tourism in South Africa.

The year 2000, we made it. The world didn't end and tourism started picking up again with President Thabo Mbeki leading the country to a better tomorrow. Things were looking good and our tourist arrivals and revenue looked good, but it was nothing compared to other smaller countries that were on our level. We had a lot of catching up to do, South Africa should've been a major tourist attraction by now, but we took a big hit and recovery is extremely difficult after such a tremendous blow.

Enter 2010, the year we have all been waiting for, the Soccer World Cup. South Africa was blooming. We woke up to an incredibly beautiful morning and the sun was bright. People rejoiced and our revenue predictions were going off the charts. The year ended with a sense of relief and we seemed to be back on track to being the Mecca of tourist attractions. Today, at the end of 2016, looking forward to 2017. We have started a new project. Flight Factory. With one goal. Sell South Africa. Sell its natural beauty, sell its infinite cultural richness, sell its magnificent people.

We are here to "Make South Africa Great Again", one flight at a time. We believe in unity and South Africa is our unity. If we can all help our country reach it's full potential, we can create the brightest future for the next generation of South Africans. At the end of the day, South Africa, itself, will be the longest lasting "business" of our country. Let's sell it together!
