#DEFEATDAYZERO Hackathon in Cape Town

Published: 01 February 2018

Startupbootcamp (SBC) Cape Town and RCS Group have announced a water-saving hackathon to be held on 9 and 10 February to commission technology from the wider Cape community in a bid to push back Day Zero.

The H2O (Hack Two Day Zero) event will host executives from Old Mutual, Nedbank, RCS, Woolworths Financial Services and PwC to engage with entrepreneurs, students, concerned citizens and local government.

“We are in the midst of a water crisis in the Western Cape and with the implications of Day Zero fast approaching there will be wide-spread impacts. The onus is not only on the individual to conserve water, but as corporates we have a responsibility to collectively apply our minds to this challenge facing the society which we operate in. Hosting a Hackathon purely focusing on the water crisis was the perfect opportunity for RCS to show both support and desire to address this issue. At RCS we pride ourselves on being at the forefront of innovation and we believe in the agility of tech startups to make a difference. It is therefore our ambition that the event may lead to finding valuable and feasible solutions for both companies and individuals,” states Regan Adams, CEO of the RCS Group.

Hackathon participants will have two days to pitch their ideas, form teams and create prototypes under the guidance of corporate sponsors.By holding events in more than 100 cities each year, SBC supports the world’s most talented founders with hands-on mentorship and access to key industry connections. SBC is known for growing and scaling innovative solutions to modern challenges within the African continent. The cohort strives to solve pertinent issues such as the water crisis by embracing new technology and ideas.

“By creating an environment to collectively pool ideas together, we believe this hackathon can ensure that both short term and long-term solutions can be designed to deal with the crisis. We encourage everyone who has a desire to make an impact to join. By bringing ideas and skills together, we can make a difference,” said Paul Nel, Chief Partnership Officer and CFO of Startupbootcamp Cape Town.

The current dam levels for Cape Town are 26.5%. If dam levels continue to drop, day zero could be a reality by 12 April. When Cape Town dam levels drop to 13.5%, the city will begin to shut down its reticulation system in residential areas. If you or anyone you know has a tech-based idea or solution to solve the problems the water crisis is causing, this hackathon may help you get your prototype produced.

“For the winning team, there will be a cash prize, with an added incentive of building the solutions designed if they are believed they will make the impact we envision,” states Paul Nel.

If you are interested in participating in the event, please sign up here.

RCS will open their corporate offices in Golf Park to host the event which will be managed and coordinated by the SBC Cape Town team.

Regus supports Business Growth in 3 New Locations in South Africa

Published: 06 November 2017

Regus, the global specialist in serviced office space, are expanding their flexible offering to three more South African cities in December 2017, growing to 3000 plus locations worldwide with over 55 centres in South Africa. The opening of the new centres in Bloemfontein, Paarl and Pietermaritzburg, are part of a strategic focus to provide world-class workspaces and infrastructure, that will accelerate growth in small businesses and corporates in oft-forgotten, but booming areas.

Since its expansion into South Africa, Regus has provided over 55 locations with co-working and meeting spaces to accommodate the increasing demand for flexible, technologically advanced, professional work areas. The centres support corporates, start-ups, entrepreneurs, students, freelancers, business tourists and creatives with an all-inclusive package at an affordable rate.

The new centres will provide cutting-edge business solutions for cities with lucrative business interests and tourism, the size of which, place a strain on local infrastructure. The timing of the opening provides start-ups and businesses the opportunity to commence 2018 with a fully equipped, professional working environment.

Bloemfontein, Free State

Hailed as legislative capital of the country, three major national highways converge in Bloemfontein, with economic hub Gauteng being the closest destination for travel by car or plane. The city’s relaxed atmosphere, bustling economy, busy university culture and lack of major corporates, place a strain on the local infrastructure. The new centre provides meeting spaces, catering, fast internet, networking and knowledge-sharing opportunities of global standards. Served by two airports, this centre is also an ideal location for business travellers.

Paarl, Western Cape

This culture-rich, picturesque area in the Winelands, through no inclement of its own, has been identified as an area requiring support as a result of the local and international business travel born from the wine export industry. The new Regus centre will provide local businesses and international travellers with state of the art, professional, co-working spaces and impressive offices for corporates wishing to relocate from the busy mid-city or those implementing a flexible work policy.

Pietermaritzburg, Kwazulu Natal

The unsung capital of Kwazulu Natal, Pietermaritzburg is a hub to the aluminium, agricultural, manufacturing and tourism sectors. Its proximity to Durban, one of the busiest ports in Africa, results in promising local business growth while maintaining some of its sleepy charm. This made it an obvious choice for Regus, who identified the need for professional, world-class working spaces that will support business growth in the area.

According to Joanne Bushell, Country Manager Regus South Africa, “The three new Regus locations were strategically chosen to support areas in our country integral to the agricultural, manufacturing and services growth, but which often don’t have commensurate support of much-needed technological infrastructure and services. We have seen our business centres boost economic growth in all the locations where we put down our footprint.

”With more centres set to open in South Africa in 2018, this footprint is steadily growing to include centres nationwide, after establishing their current business centres in the main economic hubs such as Cape Town, Durban, Pretoria and Johannesburg.

Vibescout – SA’s Largest Movie Aggregator Listing Movies on 688 Screens In 94 Cinemas

Published: 28 June 2017

28 July 2017  Vibescout – SA’s Largest Movie Aggregator Listing Movies on 688 Screens In 94 Cinemas Vibescout, an innovative start-up that provides event listings and city guides, is now listing movies showing on 690 screens in 94 cinemas across South Africa. Vibescout is now officially the largest movie aggregator in South Africa and continues to take the country’s entertainment scene to new heights.

Cape Town, South Africa, July 5, 2017 – Co-founded in 2015 by brothers’ Paul and Jonathan Myburgh, Vibescout’s vision is to provide an easy-to-use platform used to smartly curate the best things to do near you. This is done through event listings, comprehensive go-to guides and now, movie listings.

The idea behind Vibescout was first born when Paul was travelling in Saigon, Vietnam in January 2014. After visiting all the regular tourist destinations, he scoured the hostel notice boards for more unique things to do and began to wonder how he could get better insight into truly local events and activities. After realizing there was definitely a void that needed to be filled in this space, Paul brought the idea back home to South Africa later that year and soon began work on Vibescout’s first version.

Vibescout officially launched out of beta and started providing event listing in October 2016; by April 2017 they reached over 100 000 users for the month! As of 27 June 2017, Vibescout became the largest movie aggregator in South Africa, listing movies showing on 688 screens in 94 cinemas throughout the country.

“It took roughly 6 weeks to get a MVP release and from it we have had amazing user feedback. We are currently getting nearly 10 000 users weekly using our movie section to find the latest movies and locate cinemas around them. We didn't realize it at the time and such a goal wasn't even on our radar, but we are now officially the largest movie aggregator in South Africa.” - JONATHAN MYBURGH, CO-FOUNDER OF VIBESCOUT

SovTech Develops Rooster; a Social Alarm Clock App that Revolutionises the Wake-up Experience

Published: 13 January 2017

SovTech’s development team has recently developed a mobile app that promises to provide users with an entirely new wake-up experience. Rooster is a social alarm clock that is transforming mornings and making people excited to wake up through providing them with a fully customisable wake-up experience. Users can send and receive audio clips and use them as a customised alarm or have the option of waking up to Rooster channels which are updated daily with fresh content.

The brainchild of Dominic Koenig, Rooster was born out of Dom’s intense hate for his monotonous alarm every morning. “Most people can relate to that diabolical beeping alarm sound that interrupts the blissful feeling of sleep. I was simply gatvol of waking up to the same annoyance every day, and decided to record voice notes of my sister talking in hilariously stupid accents and listen to those when I woke up. Eventually I got tired of listening to the same few voice notes though and wondered how cool it would be if she could send me fresh audios…as a surprise. And so the Rooster egg was laid.”

Along with Josh Perry, his business partner and friend, and with the support of the Allan Grey Orbis Foundation, the pair approached SovTech to develop their idea into a user-friendly mobile application.

SovTech saw huge potential for the Rooster concept and the team’s passion behind the project was entirely contagious. With SovTech’s elite development team, they took the simple concept of a mobile alarm and integrated it with the ability to record and share personalized audio clips to be used as an alarm tone. Head of development at SovTech, Andrew Chouler, notes, “The team has had to overcome some complex technical difficulty during the development process but it is not everyday that you come across an application with such a strong viral nature and so building for the user whilst maintaining simplicity has been critical and we are very happy with the outcome of the MVP and look forward to the exciting features we will be integrating”   Powered by the dream to re-invent people’s mornings and personalise the experience of waking up, the Rooster team have successfully turned Dom’s idea into an exciting new application which is available in both Android and iOS app stores.

The app has already seen success with a whopping 900 downloads in its first week and downloads in a number of countries across the world. It is simple to use with a fresh user interface and the functionality to add friends and record, send and save favourited audios for the curation of an ultra-personalised wake-up. Themed channels which the team updates daily include everything from news to music, mediation and comedy, with immense possibilities for expansion through on-boarding new channel content providers.   Will this social alarm clock ensure that no one wakes up on the wrong side of the bed? Absolutely! Dom’s vision is that Rooster will replace dull smartphone alarms and believes that creating a customisable wake-up experience has huge scope for virality. “We are not sure how long it'll take for the app to become global, but I think we'll be satisfied once Morgan Freeman wakes us up.”

Luxity – SA’s latest innovation shakes up the authentic pre-owned luxury goods market

Published: 12 January 2017

Cape Town, 12 January 2017 – Luxity is one of South Africa’s newest tech start-ups that aims to give everybody a chance to sport a stylish Louis Vuitton handbag, a pair of luxurious Gucci sunglasses or some trendy Louboutin’s at affordable prices. Causing quite the stir in the industry in only a few months, this young company from Cape Town focuses on buying and selling authentic used luxury goods that are still in great condition. Following the trends and making sure to always look stylish is not always easy and can quickly get very expensive. This is where Luke Calitz from Luxity saw an opportunity to step in and make everyone’s lives more convenient and feel like a million bucks!

The Luxity online boutique provides access to some of the world’s most coveted brands, ranging from designer handbags, clutches, wallets and purses as well as other leather accessories, premium high heels and flats, high-end scarves, luxury sunglasses, and much more. “We pride ourselves in offering only 100% authentic luxury items that are still in excellent condition. At Luxity we take authentication extremely seriously and offer a full money back guarantee, should you ever prove that we sold you a fake or counterfeit item,” explains Luke Calitz, owner of Luxity. Going to an actual second hand store is not always the most pleasant of experiences and you never know what they might have in stock. On the other hand, going through a platform such as Gumtree or OLX might result in a counterfeit product. “With Luxity, our customers can browse from the safety and convenience of their homes, pay online and have a courier deliver a guaranteed authentic luxury item to their door in just a few days.” This added value of feeling safe and giving them ease of mind has led to many customers coming again and again.

Luxity’s social media channels keep customers up to date on new arrivals, which are all listed at their online boutique (www.luxity.co.za) where every item can be purchased with just few simple clicks. “To ensure that everybody can afford luxury, we offer our customers an interest free layby option where they can pay off their purchase within two months in as many instalments as they wish,” Luke explains further.

Luxity does not only cater to those with a desire to buy designer brands, but also to everyone who wants to sell designer luxury goods – whether it is to create space in the closet, by getting rid of items that do not fit or have never been worn. Like with their customers, Luxity strives to make the user experience as easy and convenient as possible: First, images and information are uploaded on the website. After Luxity’s experienced buying team checks and authenticates the item(s), the seller will be presented with the choice to either accept an immediate cash buyout, a store credit, or the option to list an item on consignment. All of this often takes place within 24-48 hours.

In only four months this Cape Town based start-up has managed to stir up the second hand market, providing a safe, reliable and trusted service to customers and sellers alike.

SovTech Invests in New Joint Venture with Zambian-Based Waste Recycling Company; TrashBack

Published: 18 October 2016

SovTech, a leading Johannesburg-based software development company, has entered into an agreement to invest in a new joint venture alongside TrashBack, a Zambian-based waste recycling company.   The new entity, to be named BioEx Tech (Biometric Exchange Technology), is the creator and distributor of an innovative recycling management software product. The company will operate initially in both Zambia and South Africa, with an eye to expanding into nine other African countries where their clients are based, within the next 36 months. Gerald Neves, SovTech’s CEO, is enthusiastic about the prospects for BioEx Tech. “The opportunity for waste management in Africa, especially at the bottom of the pyramid, is a multi-billion dollar opportunity. We are excited about embarking on this continental journey with dedicated partners such as Kathryn Warner (Trashback Group MD) and her experienced management team.”   Wastepreneurs, as they have been dubbed, are individuals who make an independent living reclaiming recyclable waste from the waste stream - predominantly from landfill sites - and selling it on to recycling companies. In South Africa it is estimated that 85,000 people make a living as wastepreneurs.

Andrew McNaught, TrashBack’s Director of Business Development says that “TrashBack’s waste management software is built from the ground up with a focus on enabling and formalising the informal sector. It gives key insights into the waste and recycling value chain through interactions with informal waste collectors, waste traders and buy back centres. The platform utilises alternative value payouts, whereby cash management and cash payments that were previously risky and expensive are now traceable, safe and reliable given the use of mobile and electronic payments. The system also provides valuable market insights as information that was previously difficult to access is now collated across the value chain providing transparency at all levels and enabling access to information for even the entry level collector to make informed business decisions.”   BioEx Tech’s innovative software simplifies waste management operations and provides the required functionality to monitor operations, material flow and finances; delivering a system which not only provides access to key operational insights in a business, but fulfils the role of a waste management financial platform.

The system is built around biometric fingerprint recognition, allowing the monitoring of suppliers across multiple buy-back recycling centers. Offering both online and offline functionality as well as being able to run off of a desktop computer or on mobile devices, this allows the system to be adapted to any environment, from urban centres in major cities to more rural or shorter term implementations. The BioEx Tech also integrates with a range of digital scales as well as advanced material tracking modules for supply chain management.   Over the next few months, BioEx Tech will begin installing the new software platform in partnership with key clients, Zambian Breweries (a subsidiary of AB InBev) and SAPPI before rolling it out to the wider market across Zambia and South Africa from early 2017.

About SovTech SovTech is a leading software development platform for businesses in Africa. Believing that rapid innovation in software, cloud and mobile technology will fundamentally revolutionise business for small, medium and large enterprises, SovTech’s platform offerings give businesses instant access to world class software development, leading cloud-based software-as-a-service products and a library of enterprise technology services.

About TrashBack TrashBack unlocks the value in waste to create a form of sustainable income in base of the pyramid communities. From its humble beginnings in Cape Town, South Africa, to a now multi-national enterprise, with collection hubs situated in Cape Town, Lusaka and Johannesburg, TrashBack has succeeded in creating over 2000 opportunities for the homeless, informal & base of the pyramid sectors

This means that a choice of interests, following friend’s, search hundreds of products while buying items for a fraction of the cost and selling them to make real profits.

LiveBids aims to help buyers and sellers fully connect in trade with seamless transactions. It is an online marketplace that is simple, interactive and social. It allows users to experience a real-time marketplace, buy products lower than the market value and socially follow buyers and sellers.

Two formats are used, namely online auctions and pay-per-bid. The first of these is the traditional online auction model, where items are sold to the highest bidder. The second is a pay-per-bid model, where would-be buyers purchase credits to bid on items. These credits go to the seller, which is how it is possible to purchase big-ticket items for nominal amounts.
