Historic Hazeldean Farm to host Jeep Warrior #5 this weekend

Published: 16 August 2016

15 August 2016, PRETORIA – This weekend, get to Pretoria East for Round 5 of South Africa’s biggest obstacle course race, the Jeep Warrior Series, which is taking place at the historic Hazeldean Valley Farm in Pretoria East from 20-21st August 2016. This will be the first year that the historic Pretoria East Farm is hosting a Jeep Warrior OCR. Hazeldean Valley was once the home of South Africa’s biggest Ayrshire herd and today, the old farm buildings - dating back to the 1940s - provide the perfect farmyard atmosphere to host the spectator-friendly Jeep Warrior Race on the banks of the Pienaars River, East of Pretoria with bushveld scenery ideal for the gruelling challenge.

Says Jonathan Hart, Advendurance event organiser and Jeep Warrior Series Course Designer, “Warriors taking part in Race 5 in Pretoria East this weekend will be able to enjoy the start of the summer season. The team has been working flat out over the last few weeks to build an exhilarating course, which will be unveiled to athletes on race day. Hazeldean Valley is an inspiring venue for spectators and athletes, offering a farmyard atmosphere on the doorstep of the city. There’s lots of bushveld and the historic venue is on the banks of the Pienaars River, offering a diverse obstacle course for competitors. Bring on the weekend!” Participants can look forward to a day of climbing, crawling, hanging and jumping as they attempt to tackle some of the course favourites, designed to challenge the Black Ops athletes. Competition in the pro-level Black Ops Elite race is fierce heading into Race 5.

Black Ops Elite presents the toughest of courses, set over 15 - 20 km with 30 obstacles, and matching world OCR standards. Currently, Jeep Team’s Thomas van Tonder tops the men’s Black Ops Elite Leaderboard, with 14 873 points, after winning Race 1, placing 2nd in Race 2, finishing 5th in Race 3 and 1st in race 4. With 13 844 points, Michael Joubert is 2nd Male, followed by Greg Avierinos with 13 714 points. Says Van Tonder, “Looking forward to a packed elite field this weekend with a whole lot of glory and the keys to the Renegade back up for grabs. I am looking to put in a strong showing on Sunday in order to keep my lead on the Warrior series standings, and build up the conference for OCR World Championship 9 weeks from now. I am expecting a flat and very high intensity race and an exciting new venue.” In the Women’s Black Ops Elite standings, Trish Bahlmann heads the leaderboard with 13 651 points. Bahlmann won Race 1, finished 3rd in Race 2, placed 4th in Race 3 and 2nd in Race4. With 12 220 points, Dominique D’Oliveira is 2nd overall, followed by Hanneke Dannhauser in 3rd with 12 000 points. Jeep Team’s Carina Marx is in 4th with 9 958 points.

An alternative to the Black Ops course is Warrior Commando, covering 10 – 14km with 15 obstacles. This course is the ideal team-building experience for couples, friends and work colleagues. Warrior Rookie is the perfect introduction to OCR, offering 15 fun obstacles over 5-8 km. Not only will you be coming to the greatest, coolest race in Africa, but you will also be able to get up close and personal with the latest and greatest from the best vehicle brand on the planet, Jeep. Join the Jeep Team at the exhibition area to see, feel and experience Freedom. Reebok, the official series’ partner, are international pioneers of professional OCR gear, having designed the world’s first OCR specific shoes – the All-Terrain Series. EDITOR’S NOTES A BRIEF HISTORY OF OCR
Today’s obstacle course racing has evolved from military-style bootcamp training courses that were used to prepare recruits for combat. One of the world’s oldest competitive OCR events is the notorious Tough Guy Challenge, which takes place every year in Staffordshire, England. Started in 1987, the race claims to be “the world's most demanding one-day survival ordeal”. Held in in the middle of the British winter, Tough Guy’s 15km course is designed to resemble a World War One battleground, with 25 obstacles featuring steep hill climbs and cliffs, freezing water pools and muddy ditches, fire pits, rope bridges, nets and barbed wire fences. In 2010, OCR truly became an accessible sport to everyone, not just the super fit. This was in part due to the launch of the Spartan and Tough Mudder obstacle races in the USA that catered to a range of fitness abilities. Both races soon gained mass support and sponsorship, with over a million Americans registering for and participating in OCR in 2011. In 2014, the first OCR World Championships took place in Ohio USA. It was won by the UK's Jonathan Albon, who went on to successfully defend his crown in 2015.

ABOUT THE JEEP WARRIOR SERIES
The Jeep Warrior Race is South Africa’s oldest and largest obstacle course race that spans eight events across four provinces. The series burst onto the scene in 2013 and immediately spearheaded the meteoric rise of obstacle racing in South Africa. It quickly grew to up to 9000 participants per event and remains at the forefront of the growth spurt in the new sport of obstacle racing with its larger than life obstacles and innovative courses to challenge South Africans. What makes Jeep Warrior Race so popular, is that anyone can participate - all you need is a pair of old running shoes and a great sense for adventure. INTERESTED IN THE FUTURE OF THE SOUTH AFRICAN WINE INDUSTRY? The Ex Animo Address returns in 2016

Published: 08 August 2016

The Ex Animo Address returns in 2016

On the evening of Monday the 22nd August 2016, the second annual Ex Animo Address will be held at Joostenberg Bistro in Stellenbosch.

The aim of the evening is to provide an environment for key wine-industry personnel to talk uninterrupted on a subject that they are passionate about regarding the future of the South African wine industry. The audience is given time to ask questions of each speaker following their presentation. The event is run by David and Jeannette Clarke of Ex Animo Wine Company. David will host the evening.

All profits from ticket sales are donated to charitable or not-for-profit causes of the speakers' choice. Last year the inaugural Ex Animo Address raised R8500 and the Clarkes are hoping to increase that number substantially in 2016 with the support of the wine industry.

With ever-increasing competitive local and international markets, both SAWIS and VinPro giving emphasis to volume production, and WOSA mandated to solely focus on exports, it seemed to Ex Animo Wine Company co-founder David Clarke that there was a lack of open and organised discussion within South Africa regarding the making and marketing of high quality, terroir-driven wines.

The Ex Animo Address gives attendees the opportunity to listen to, and interact with leaders in the wine industry – to discuss key ideas and issues that affect us all [in the industry]. It also gives speakers an opportunity to fully express and share their experience and knowledge from their journey in wine with a vision to the future,” explains Mr. Clarke.

This will be the second Ex Animo Address held. The 2015 speakers were: Chris Alheit (Alheit Vineyards), Neil Grant (Burrata, Bocca, Open Door, South African Sommeliers Association) and David Cope (Publik).

The entry fee includes a delicious bowl of warming vegetable soup made by Joostenberg. Drinks are available to purchase on the night.

Details:

When - Monday 22nd August

Arrival at 18h00 for soup.

Where - Joostenberg Bistro R304 Muldersvlei, Stellenbosch, 7607

Price - R200 per person

The Speakers 2016 (in alphabetical order):

Rosa Kruger The current Vineyard Manager for Capensis, Mullineux & Leeu, Rupert & Rothschild, Twee Jong Gesellen and Reyneke. A former lawyer, she has been practicing viticulture since 1996, Rosa has worked at Uva Mira, Cape Point Vineyards, L'Ormarins and has also had a lot to do with the rise of close friend Eben Sadie. Based in the Swartland, fanatical about vineyards, especially those with old vines, she is the driving force behind the Old Vineyard Project.

Subject: "Viticulture in South Africa: the past, the present and the future"

Charity: I am old (www.iamold.co.za)

David Clarke on Rosa Kruger: “In my opinion Rosa is the most celebrated viticulturalist currently working in South Africa. In my 17 years in the industry, I have never met a person more passionate about vineyards”

Adam also produces wine under his own labels Marvelous, Yardstick and Raised by Wolves. Subject: “Climate change, urbanisation and profitablity in Stellenbosch”

Charity: Animal Welfare Society Stellenbosch

David Clarke on Adam Mason “Adam has a unique perspective on the industry being a key player in both commercial (Mulderbosch) and boutique (Yardstick etc.) production. One of the most erudite and considered winemakers currently operating in South Africa.”

JP Rossouw Jean-Pierre Rossouw is Publisher of Platter's SA Wine Guide and Rossouw's Restaurants. He's been a food and wine writer for over two decades, contributing to local and international titles, including writing the weekly Cape Times wine column for over 10 years. Jeep Team OCR Athletes win the battle at the Battlerush Winter Charge

Published: 05 August 2016

JOHANNESBURG, 05 August 2016 – This weekend saw the Jeep Team Obstacle Course super stars, Thomas Van Tonder and Carina Marx take 1st place in their categories respectively in the Battlerush Winter Charge at the Jozi X Adventure Centre on 31 July 2016. Jeep Team’s Joshua Masudi took 7th place. The Battlerush Winter Charge is considered to be the ultimate obstacle course race, as it is designed by athletes for athletes. It took place over 10km consisting of 36 obstacles built in and around the Jozi X Adventure Centre, the PWC Bike Park and around St. Peter’s College. The obstacles were given names such as the Sternum checker, Irish table, Blades of walls, Traverse walls, Big walls, Peg board, Rope climb, Up container and Down container. With just 25 seconds between 1st and 3rd place in the Elite Men’s category, Thomas Van Tonder’s race was brutish and tight as he fought hard against well-known OCR athletes, Bradley Claase, Louis Smit and Greg Avierinos.

Fourth place went to Greg Avierinos in 58m05. Jeep Team’s OCR women’s superstar, Carina Marx, has slowly climbed the ladder of success over the past year whilst being under the Jeep Team OCR banner. Jeep Team Tri-Athletes, Lord and Jonsson, scoop Gold this weekend

Published: 26 July 2016

KWAZULU-NATAL, 26 JULY 2016 - The weekend saw Jeep Team Multisport athletes, Michael Lord, winning gold in the Standard Bank Duo and Trail Challenge in Boschendal, and Mikaela Jonsson (19) winning her first Olympic Distance Triathlon at the Tinman Tri-series in Durban. On Saturday, 23 July 2016, Michael Lord competed in the Standard Bank Duo Challenge – the Duo Challenge Long, which consisted of a 25 km MTB and a 10 km trail run. During the bike leg, he had a quick start and managed to break away from the rest of the field with fellow competitor, Andrew Houston. Completing the bike leg together, Lord was then able to put some distance between him and Houston during the run, finishing in a winning time of 02h04m26s.

Says Lord of his weekend win: “The two of us rode the whole of the bike course together. I have never ridden Boschendal before. There are some absolutely stunning trails and awesome little nooks and areas on route. At one stage we were riding just below the cliff faces with huge views of the whole of the Franschoek Valley. I definitely want to ride here again. We finished the bike together and then I managed to get away on the run. Super fun race, thanks Andrew.” The TinMan Tri-series took place in Durban at the Suncoast Sundeck on Sunday, 24 July.

The TinMan Triathlon is a fast-paced, action-packed Triathlon and Running event. From the 4 different races offered, junior triathlon superstar, Mikaela Jonsson, competed in the tough, highly contested Ultra Tri Challenge - the Olympic Distance Triathlon - a 1km swim, a 30km cycle and a 10km run. Despite only being back in training for 3 weeks, Jonsson’s performance was impressive in all 3 stages, coming out of the water in a close 3rd in 13m27s, she gave it everything in the cycle leg, finishing in a close 2nd in 59m21s, and again ran hard to finish 2nd in 43m46s, winning in an overall time of 01h58m34, ahead of 2nd placed Teneal Featherby in 01h58s42, and 3rd placed Hayley Mee in 02h02m14.

Jonnson won women overall and her age category, but interestingly, as in all triathlons, the transition time taken between legs can mean the difference between winning and losing, as in this race. Jonnson’s race-time against Featherby was slower overall by 8 seconds, but 1m03s faster than Featherby in transition time.

Says Jonsson of her experience: “I'm so happy to have taken the win overall in my first-ever Olympic Distance Tri at the Tinman Triathlon in Durban. I had such a fantastic race. Thanks to some incredibly strong ladies for pushing me all the way, especially on the bike course. Finally feeling like myself again, after only being back at training for 3 weeks after battling with illness for over a month, and my first swim race after doing shoulder rehab for more than 2 months. I'm so grateful to everyone who has helped me with such patience and wisdom over the last few months. Onwards and upwards.”

The new models are:

Suzuki Splash - Group A

Safety and security features include dual front airbags, ABS brakes and key-operated central locking. The vehicle comes standard with power-steering, a radio CD audio system and air-conditioning. The Suzuki Splash joins the Chevrolet Spark Lite LS, Honda Brio Comfort and Datsun Go in Group A.

Ford B-Max Ambiente - Group R
The Ford B-Max is the brand's all-new practical family vehicle, offering superb fuel economy, lots of space and great safety features. The vehicle is powered by Ford's one-litre EcoBoost turbocharged three-cylinder engine, which Ford says, consumes 4.9 litres per 100km. The vehicle comes with power steering; 5-speed manual transmission; Ford SYNC with Bluetooth and Voice Control; Ford Audio / CD / MP3 with 6 speakers, USB and Aux; 60/40 split rear seats in 7 different folding combinations; adjustable load floor in boot; and air conditioning. The Ford B-Max joins the Ford Fiesta, VW Polo, Honda Jazz and Renault Clio Expression in Group R. The Ford B-Max is the brand's all-new practical family vehicle, offering superb fuel economy, lots of space and great safety features.

Ford Fusion - Group Z
With its intelligent technology and stylish design, the new Ford Fusion automatic sedan makes every journey feel special. The vehicle is a real looker with a sport coupe profile, low roof and, in Ford's words, "sculpted to convey visual lightness". The Ford Fusion is powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine and comes standard with Ford's SYNC 2 voice-control, Bluetooth connectivity through a 20cm touchscreen that operates phone, trip entertainment, and aircon. Driving features include lane keeping, which helps the driver to maintain proper lane position; adaptive cruise control using forward-looking radar that "looks" down the road to discern slower traffic and react accordingly; and active park assist, which are sensors that help identify suitable parking slots, calculate the trajectory and steer the car home. Neat! The Ford Fusion joins the Volvo S60 T4 and Volvo V40 in Group Z.
