Carrol Boyes designs Sanlam CT Marathon 2018 Trophy

Published: 19 September 2018

The annual Sanlam Cape Town Marathon (42.2km), taking place on 23 September 2018, is a prestigious city race open to a range of running enthusiasts from elite athletes to social runners. With over 20 000 runners participating last year from all over the world, this marathon has grown to be one of the most popular road running events both locally and internationally. Carrol Boyes Functional Art, one of South Africa’s most luxurious home-wear brands was bestowed with the honour of designing the winner’s trophy for this prestigious event which will be presented by South African long distance runner, Elana Meyer.

Meyer says, “The uniquely designed Carrol Boyes Cape Town Marathon trophy symbolises more than the celebration of victory - winners take home a piece of Cape Town that has been incorporated in the tough, water-wise leaves of the ‘Suurvy’ as part of the laurel wreath that circle the bowl to celebrate an exceptional experience winning Africa’s only Gold Label marathon!”

Carrol Boyes says, “It was a great honour as a Capetonian and artist for my company to be asked to design the trophy for The Sanlam Cape Town Marathon.”

About Madeleine Morgan, the designer of the trophy:

Madeleine Morgan is a prototype and restoration artist as well as a designer, with an array of talents that include design, sketching and sculpting. She is happiest when getting her hands dirty and working on new designs, and finds it extremely satisfying to see her work through from its production stages to being put on display in a world-renowned store. After qualifying in Industrial Design at CPUT in 2004, Madi joined the company and soon made her mark. She now has several of her own designs.

Madeleine says 'Suurvy - or sour fig - is a plant familiar to all Capetonians. You will find it thriving along wild open roads, cultivated suburban pavements and the like. It is known to be tough, water wise and tenacious, qualities which marathoners share. On this trophy, its bold leaves are a local take on the laurel wreath, circling and raising the bowl to celebrate the winners of the Cape Town Marathon. The trophy which is +- 28 cm wide and 22cm high has a Carrol Boyes’ signature look and feel and boasts a solid cast pewter lid with an aluminum bowl and wooden base.'

Carrol Boyes Functional Art and its staff would like to wish all the runners good luck and to thank Sanlam for the opportunity of being involved in such a prestigious event.

ENTRIES OPEN FOR THE K-WAY SKYRUN 38KM MOUNTAIN RACE

Published: 22 August 2018

For 22 years, K-Way SkyRun have been putting up a “hell of a run” for avid local and international endurance runners. In a bid to introduce even more people to this spectacular race, race organisers, Pure Adventures, have added a new 38km route to the entry mix. Known as the toughest race in Africa, they aren’t letting an “easy” route slip in, the shorter route will stay true to the SkyRun ethos by being an unmarked, self-navigated and self-supported route. “The route is tough, but we have given competitors a cut off of 13hours to complete the distance, which should be doable for most prepared athletes,” says race organiser Mike de Haast from Pure Adventures.

What makes this route different, is that unlike the 100km and 65km routes it will start at the picturesque Wartrail Country Club, and will only begin once the winner of the 100km route has crossed over the finished line. “The SkyRun 38km is an event where athletes have the ability to enjoy and test the nature of a SkyRun event, slowly moving up to possibly completing the infamous 100km event” states De Haast. “It is a great stepping stone for those wanting to experience the thrills of mountain running.”

“We are thrilled to add a 38km route to the fold, it will allow keen trail runners to test the waters before signing up for the treacherous 65km and iconic 100km route, what a great race to test the waters for the iconic SkyRun 100km,” says Caitlin Doney, Public Relations Coordinator for K-Way. She continues “We urge those that have always had SkyRun on their bucket list, to gear up and get out, taking the opportunity of being amongst the first runners to ever run the inaugural SkyRun 38km.”

Entries are limited to only 100 participants. Make sure you get yours in to take part in the brand new SkyRun 38Km, tailored for athletes looking to enjoy not only the beauty of Wartrail country but also develop their training and endurance whilst being immersed in one of South Africa’s most beautiful playgrounds. The races will be taking place on Saturday 17 and Sunday 18 November 2017.

Jeep Team’s Van Tonder and Marx in Warrior Mode ahead Of OCR World Champs

Published: 15 September 2016

13 SEPTEMBER 2016, JOHANNESBURG – It is less than a month until the world’s top OCR athletes fight it out at the third OCR World Championships from 14-16 October 2016 at the Blue Mountain Resort, Toronto in Ontario, Canada.

Jeep Team athletes, Thomas van Tonder and Carina Marx, have both qualified and have been in full Warrior mode ahead of the World Championship.

Both Van Tonder and Marx were on fire at the recent Battlerush OCR fundraiser, a gruelling OCR Training event designed to push athletes through tough individual obstacles that may be seen at the World Champs; and both won the Savage Beast race at The Beast OCR event this past weekend.

To have qualified for OCR World Champs, South Africans need to have achieved a Jeep Warrior Top 20 finish in an Elite category in their gender, or an Impi Challenge Top 20 finish in the Elite division in their gender.

Van Tonder, over in the past 12 months, has achieved three 1st places, six 2nd places, and one 5th place. Marx, over the same period, has achieved four 2nd places, four 3rd places and two 5th places. Both athletes are well qualified for the Championships but won’t know how they truly compare against the rest of the world until they are neck deep in mud in Ontario.

The OCR athletes selected for Team OCR South Africa to go to World Champs is Thomas van Tonder, Bradley Claase, Michael Joubert and Claude Eksteen (not going) for Men; and Hanneke Dannhauser, Carina Marx and Trish Bahlmann (not going) for Women.

Joining van Tonder and Marx in Canada, is fellow Jeep OCR athlete, JJ Deysel, who was not selected for the SA OCR Team, but will compete in other races over the Championship weekend.

According to the event organisers, the OCR World Championships will put the world’s top athletes through the ultimate physical and mental challenge across a series of obstacles over a distance of approximately 13km and will marry natural elements with some of the most challenging obstacles in OCR history.

While the course will share some of the same terrain and obstacles our team will be used to, a significant portion of the course and obstacles will be new to athletes and unveiled only on race weekend.

It is the first truly-independent global Championship for the burgeoning sport of Obstacle Course Racing. It is a singular event created to unify, promote, and increase participation in the sport of OCR, while celebrating its strong and highly-versatile athletes.

Said Marx, “My OCR path started with my first Rookie (Jeep Warrior Race) two and a half years ago. It was love at first “mud”. I admired the Black Ops Elite ladies for their skills and toughness, even though they looked fairly soft on the outside. It was a dream and a goal of mine to get to that level. Two years later, I joined Jeep Team and selected for Team OCR South Africa, qualifying to take part at the OCR World Champs.”

Said van Tonder: “The Beast 6 was one of the best courses of The Beast Series so far. In this event, I got to run the 5km route with #StandWithStan amputee after our race, an incredibly humbling experience and a reminder of how blessed we are to be able to do what we are doing. This takes my BEAST winning streak to all 6 events. I’m so amped for the World Champs next month.”

Paddling – McGregor the Machine (sourced from Gameplan Media)

South African Jeep Team paddling icon, Hank McGregor, wants another K1 and potentially a K2 title at the ICF Canoe Marathon Masters World Championships taking place in Brandenberg, Germany from 16 to 18 September.

McGregor believes the German facility may well suit him better than the course in Gyor, Hungary where he won gold in the K1 event and silver in the K2 with doubles partner, Jasper Mocké.

“After all the years of racing international marathon championships, the German course is still one that I haven’t raced on,” the Euro Steel/Kayak Centre ace mentioned. “From what I can see, the course is far more open than last year’s.

“Also it isn’t on a river, which will suit me better, and if the wind picks up then the race might become a little like a surfski race, which again should benefit me.

“At about 210 metres, the portage is about three times as long as last year’s, so if you are not a strong runner then you might battle.”

“My partner, Jasper Mocké, is also in good form at the moment and came off a good win at the Breede Canoe Marathon recently, so if we can just make sure we remain fit and healthy then I think we should be in with a good shout in the K2 race as well.

“Having narrowly missed out on gold in the K2 last year in the end sprint, we have got more than enough motivation to rectify that this year and we are going out there to do our best and give it a proper shot,” added McGregor.

The world’s best marathon paddlers will gather to attempt to dethrone McGregor – who has claimed the global K1 crown a remarkable four times in the past five years – and with the majority of the challenge likely to come from Europe, McGregor understands the threat that the rest of the field poses to his crown.

“I can’t really single out any specific challenger but the Portuguese, Spanish and Hungarians always provide a really stern test.

“Andy Birkett will also be there and he has been going really well with his World Cup win recently, so the field is going to be incredibly strong and I will need to make sure I am in good shape and healthy so I can be in with a chance,” explained a confident McGregor. Other paddling news:

Jeep Team Paddle Veteran and former South African Team Captain, Barry Lewin, recently led a group of experienced paddlers on an exploratory trip along the KwaZulu-Natal coastline from Cape Vidal to St Lucia.

Lewin is working closely with iSimangaliso Wetland Park to create an annual paddling event that will raise funds and awareness for the Wetland Conservation area from Cape Vidal to St Lucia.

Said Lewin, “We had such a great weekend away in St Lucia. I have been working with the Park to set up a race there in the future and am blown away by what we have right on our doorstep, Africa is amazing. We paddled from Cape Vidal to St Lucia on a nice NE with some great people.”

MTB

Jeep Team’s MTB athlete, Thinus Redelinghuys placed 8th in the ultra-marathon at Ashburton National MTB Series #6, which took place at Dulstroom at Dunkeld Country Estate on 3rd September.

The National MTB Series consists of seven events across 6 provinces over an eight month period.

The final event in the series takes place Rooiberg on 15th October 2016 at the Rooberg Golf Club.

Jeep Warrior's ‘Breaking Point’ takes no prisoners at Hobby Park

Published: 05 May 2016

Joubert and Dannhauser take Black Ops Elite Men’s and Women’s titles

JOHANNESBURG, 05 MAY 2016 – Over 6 500 Jeep Warrior participants faced extreme challenges at Race#3 of the 2016 Jeep Warrior Series, which took place on the 23rd and 24th April 2016 at Hobby Park in Krugersdorp.

Athletes who raced in Black Ops Elite (30 obstacles over 16km distance) on Sunday, were in agreement that the course was exceptionally tough, mentally and physically, as only 26 elites of 70 starters finished the race.

The toughest obstacle, ‘Breaking Point’, lived up to its name, and proved to be the game changer in the Elite Men’s race.

Breaking Point demands an extreme test of upper body strength that requires athletes to get through a 15m sequence of ropes, rings, chains and monkey bars without falling. Right at the end of Breaking Point, athletes need to move themselves over a few metres using only their fingertips, in a stretch known as the Cliff Hanger. It’s at this point that many fall.

New obstacles in the elite events included Extreme Monkey (a series of pivoting ladders) and a heavy barrel-carrying obstacle.

In the men’s Black Ops Elite, Race#1 winner Thomas van Tonder (Jeep Team) and Race#2 winner Claude Eksteen (Adventure Obstacle Training) started off convincingly, managing to get in front at the first bottleneck onto the first single track.

Two kilometres into the race, well-known runner, Eksteen, surged ahead through the flat running section, leaving Van Tonder in second, with Bradley Claase (Battlerush) and Michael Joubert (Nevarest Team) chasing a few seconds behind.

These Black Ops Elite leaders stayed in this order for three quarters of the race until Breaking Point.

Eksteen reached Breaking Point first, but was unable to get through on his first attempt. Van Tonder was next to attempt the obstacle, but he too fell prey to this extreme test of upper body strength, falling from the final cliff hanger section.

This gave Michael Joubert the opportunity he needed to surge ahead, getting through Breaking Point on first attempt and through to the finish line to claim the men’s title in 1h37m30, with Claase 2nd in 1h40m22 and Greg Avierinos (Nevarest Team) 3rd in 1h42m58. Jeep Team’s Jay Jay Deysel placed 4th in 1h45m59, with Van Tonder finishing 5th in 2h00m10.

Said Joubert, “It was a great race. I started a bit slow, trying to keep my pace and my energy. Bradley [Claase] and I raced alongside each other for most of the race and that was great. Breaking Point was really tough this time around after so much up and downhill running on the course. I kept an easy pace from the start, and this luckily gave me the edge, giving me enough energy to get through Breaking Point first time round.”

The Black Ops Elite women compete on exactly the same course as the men elite. In fact, throughout all the Jeep Warrior events men and women compete on all the same courses. It stands to reason why the Jeep vehicle brand loves the Warrior brand so much – it’s all about equality and strength.

Race#2 winner, Hanneke Dannhauser (USN), dominated the women’s elite race, securing the lead at the start and going on to conquer Breaking Point on her first attempt. No small feat. She claimed the women’s crown in 2h00m12, followed by Jeep Team’s Carina Marx in 2nd (2h08m35) and Dominique D'Oliveira 3rd in 2h12m02.

Testament to the strength of these warrior women – the top 3 women elites were placed in the Top 10 overall male and female. Dannhauser placed 6th overall, Marx placed 9th and D'Oliveira placed 10th.

Said Dannhauser, “It was a close race. Carina and Dominique were chasing me the whole time. I kept looking over my shoulder and they were right behind me. Awesome that all three of us got through Breaking Point on first attempt and made the top 10 overall! The course was a great challenge, but I definitely didn’t enjoy all the uphills. I loved the Hobby Park venue because of the beautiful setting with lots of trees. It was also really spectator-friendly, which made for a great festive atmosphere.”

Said Van Tonder, “It was a superb day for racing - clear skies and ‎game faces all round. The route had a lot of steep hills with spots of very technical running. At the start the course went straight into single track. Luckily I was one of the first to get through to the front of the pack. Only about 2kms into the race did the course flatten out. As expected, it was here that Claude [Eksteen] cranked up the pace, securing the lead.

I think my biggest mistake of the day was not using my legs enough on the rope climb obstacle just before Breaking Point. The ropes took the extra bit of grip-strength that I needed for Breaking Point. I made it all the way to the cliff hanger part at the end, and then my old nemesis got some pay-back and I fell. The results tell the story of how that ended.”
