Launch of Non-Profit Organization Addressing Food Insecurity Amongst Tertiary Students in South Africa

Johannesburg, 10 November 2021 - Non-profit company, Feed a Student on Rainy Days launches its first initiative to address student hunger in South Africa’s universities. Rainy Days SA seeks to raise awareness about the crisis of food insecurity affecting vulnerable students from underprivileged backgrounds.

Rainy Days SA, an initiative of Feed a Student on Rainy Days, is determined to make a difference in the lives of students affected by food insecurity. Food insecurity can be described as the state of having unreliable access to sufficient food.

The charity organization is run by sisters, Lolo Ntshiqa and Asanda Ntshiqa, whose humble beginnings are similar to the realities faced by many Black South African students. “Our parents fought against all odds to ensure we received quality education from institutions they could only dream of attending,” said Asanda, “Who knows what kind of life we would have had, had it not been for the sacrifices they made?”

Government programs, like the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS), which provides financial aid to underprivileged students, has opened doors for more young people from underprivileged backgrounds to attend institutions of higher learning. However, many of these students continue to face challenges, such as food insecurity, throughout the course of completing their diplomas or degrees.

According to Lolo Ntshiqa, the impact of student hunger can influence students’ academic success. “When a student is hungry, all they can think about is where their next meal will come from. In class, they may be absent-minded or suffer from brain fog due to the low energy they are running on. Not having access to a basic human need, such as food, can also lead to poor mental health, causing students to skip classes or drop out of university.”

Rainy Days SA is on a mission to raise awareness around the issue of food insecurity, particularly on how it affects students. The organization calls upon students, alumni, public institutions, and businesses to join the movement and assist in finding practical solutions for providing low-cost, nutritious, and affordable food packages to vulnerable students.

You can support the charity by visiting their website, www.rainydayssa.org and making a financial contribution, from as little as R10, which will go toward raising funds for student food packages. If you have a social media account, you can support the cause by following the organization’s social media pages and joining the conversations. On Instagram and Twitter (rainydays_sa) and Facebook and LinkedIn (Rainy Days SA).

Marabastad sees transformation

Published: 24 October 2019

In the current political status of our country, with Eskom leaving us in the dark, high percentages of people immigrating to seemingly greener pastures and the ever-increasing unemployment rate, it is not always easy to find the reasons to join the #ImStaying movement.  But this story will change your mind, or at least get you thinking. One of our charities that is on the Loving Thy Neighbour platform, Garden of Life was asked by the revolutionary organisation Dare to Love, to start a veggie garden in the heart of Marabastad, where things not only looked like death, but certainly smelled like it too.On the 7th of September 2019, Dare to Love, Garden of Life and a few other NPOs collaborated to clean up the streets and start a vegetable garden.  In the words of Garden of Life’s founder, Steven Barnard: “Spent the morning with Dare to Love team. A wonderful humbling experience. Turning a war zone where people were killed a few days earlier into a place where they now can grow their own food...”

It is people like these, who will help us transform our country. Organisations that are willing to take a stand against poverty, against fear and that will act upon their convictions that will bring about much needed change.  Yes, we are a country in disaster, yes, we are a country with divides, but can we change it?  And the answer simply is, YES, WE CAN.  When we take hands, when we give out of our abundance or sometimes just out of the little, we must give.  It is when we partner with organisations, just like these, that we can, at least bring hope to begin with, and later change will be evident.   We might not see the change today, or even tomorrow, but we will see it, if we all work together.

Garden of Life trains these people, just like Joyce Sithole (seen in this picture) to mend their gardens and generate not only food but create a small business that can generate income to families in impoverished areas.  Today, the 24th of October, more than a month later, these veggies are flourishing, growing and feeding some of the families of Marabastad.    Joyce is even able to sell some of these veggies and generate an income for her family.

On the Loving Thy Neighbour platform we strive to bring people together, people who have something to GIVE.  Not always money, but sometimes just of their TIME, other times of their TALENT and then most times of their MONEY, to enable organisations to continue their good work.  As we all decide to STAY, let’s work together to see South Africa become the beautiful country that we know it to be! Find out more about organisations similar to Garden of Life on our website, at www.lovingthyneighbour.org.

College of Magic‘s star female juggling students defy gravity and expectations on World Juggling Day

Published: 11 June 2019

Six of Cape Town’s youngest and most dexterous female jugglers are defying gravity and expectations in the art of juggling at the College of Magic in Claremont, ahead of World Juggling Day on Sunday 16 June 2019. Lihle Bomsini (13) from Gugulethu, Elethu Bukula (12) from Philippi, Ongezwa Fodo (11), from Philippi, Ruby Park (12) from Constantia, Liyema Peter (12), from Philippi and Lindokuhle Teyi (14), from Philippi are students of the College of Magic, Cape Town’s only magical arts organisation.

In addition to attending weekly magical and life-skills lessons every Saturday at the College’s mysterious Victorian manor, the girls are honing their balancing skills with juggling instructor Michael Barta. World Juggling Day is celebrated annually, close to or on 16 June, to honour skilled performers who are able to juggle and balance as many objects (balls, clubs, fruit, plates, swords etc) as possible at a time.

Barta, who has been teaching juggling at the College of Magic for more than 30 years, is thrilled with the rise of female performers in the art of juggling: “Juggling is a unique artform that helps you understand your body with uninhibited movement.

It definitely isn’t for boys only! The ability and level of skills for female jugglers is often better than their male counterparts. It’s incredible to see our young female juggling students work together towards cooperative excellence and I look forward to seeing their performance skills grow over the next few years”, says Barta.

The girls are especially enthusiastic about the positive spin-offs learning the art of juggling has had on their lives and education: “I was really shy before joining the College of Magic and I’ve gained so much confidence through juggling.

The boys are always eager to teach us more difficult juggling tricks. I won 2nd place in the Allied Arts Junior Juggling Contest last year for my juggling skills and I am so proud of myself!”, says Liyema. Ruby agrees: “I wanted to learn juggling because I’ve seen so many of my magical classmates doing it and I thought it was amazing. Now I can do it, too, and I cannot wait to learn more intricate juggling acts! ”, says the excited performer.

Come and see our star female juggling juggernauts in action at the 2019 Traditional Children’s Magic Festival: Capetonian families are invited to see Elethu, Lihle, Lindokuhle, Liyema, Ongezwa and Ruby defy the laws of gravity with their incredible juggling skills at the College of Magic’s beguiling winter school holiday event, the 2019 Traditional Children’s Magic Festival, from Wednesday 19 to Saturday 22 June 2019!

Berglas, world famous magician and supporter of Cape Town’s College of Magic awarded MBE

Published: 08 January 2019

David Berglas, internationally renowned magician and longtime supporter of the College of Magic, Cape Town’s only magical arts organisation,  has been appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in the New Year Honours List for services to Magic and Psychology.

It is believed that this is the first time the honour has been presented to anyone for their contribution to the art of magic.Berglas, 92, said:

“I am delighted to accept this honour but even more pleased that the art of magic has at last been recognised. I have spent over 60 years entertaining people in person, on radio and television -“reading their minds” - but I certainly didn’t see this one coming.”

Berglas has been an inspiration to magicians worldwide. On hearing of the award Derren Brown said: “This honour recognises one of our greatest living magical performers. Generations of magicians owe him a debt of gratitude. Each of my shows is indebted to his artistry and astonishing body of work. I thank him for his constant inspiration.”

The Magic Circle president Scott Penrose said: “I am sure our members both in the UK and around the world will join me in congratulating David Berglas’ on receiving this award which recognises his  immense contribution to magic. As our former president he was deeply involved in the successful development of our permanent HQ in London. His influence on magic and magicians has been profound for over 60 years and many magicians owe him a real debt of gratitude.”

The College of Magic, a South African non-profit organisation and the only of its kind in the world, is thrilled for Berglas:

“David Berglas has played a crucial role in developing and promoting the College of Magic. His generous philanthropic support has seen the creation of many training facilities benefitting the thousands of students and tens of thousands of school learners who have attended the College of Magic educational programmes over the past 39 years. His inspiration, encouragement and recognition have played a pivotal role in building our organisation internationally and from within, strengthening our important transformative role among the youth of South Africa,” said David Gore, director of the College of Magic.

Berglas’ extraordinary career started in the 50s. Six weeks at the Windmill Theatre in London in 1953 was followed by a whirlwind tour of variety theatres where he often topped the bill.

He became a household name with his regular performances on radio, conducting “Nationwide Psychological Experiments” involving millions of listeners. He received the largest collection of fan mail ever for a BBC radio series. In the 70s he hosted a late-night phone-in programme on LBC.

He had his own BBC television show “Meet David Berglas” in 1954 which had an audience of over 19 million and then hosted the first ever commercial TV series in 1955. In the 80s his series “The Mind of David Berglas” on Channel 4 he entertained celebrity guests such as Omar Sharif, Britt Ekland and Christopher Lee.

Dubbed the “International Man of Mystery” Berglas was renowned for creating big stunts - among them, driving a car blindfold around central London, hurtling blindfold down the Cresta Run, stopping the traffic - and people - in Piccadilly Circus. He also confounded the magical profession with his pulse stopping routine and with his ability to persuade strangers to levitate a heavy table.

His version of the Any Card at Any Number  routine has been known for many years as the Berglas Effect and magicians consider this the holy grail of card magic. He has also acted as a creative consultant on many major films, most notably five Bond movies. Berglas has entertained most members of the Royal Family and a host of celebrities including Winston Churchill, Frank Sinatra and Michael Jackson . At one time he was the opening act for the Rolling Stones.

In the magic world Berglas has received most major international honours. He was President of The Magic Circle, the world’s premier magic society, from 1989-1998 and helped revitalise the society. During his tenure The Magic Circle admitted women as members, established the Young Magician’s Club and acquired  and refurbished the old warehouse in Euston that became their first permanent HQ.

He has helped raise huge amounts for charity and was voted “King Rat” of the Grand Order of Water Rats, the leading show business charity. For further information about David Berglas, please contact: Charlie Burgess 07941 371440.
