Hospital Association of South Africa Announces New Board

Published: 07 October 2021

The Hospital Association of South Africa elected a new Board at its Annual General Meeting earlier this month, in Johannesburg.André Joseph from Life Healthcare replaces Dr Biren Valodia from Mediclinic Southern Africa who ended a three-year stint as Chairman. Dr Valodia was re-elected as one of three Board members representing Mediclinic Southern Africa. Neil Nair, the Chief Executive Officer of the largest private independent hospital group in the country, the National Hospital Network, continues as Deputy Chairman. Mr Tienie van der Berg continues as Treasurer. The Board has been expanded from 11 members to 16 members. The Association's Chief Executive Officer, Dr Dumisani Bomela, says: "The Association is being called on to play an important role as government leads healthcare reform in the years ahead. This resizing of the HASA Board therefore is a proactive measure to both strengthen the Board with additional and necessary skills, and to add capacity to ensure the Board can respond to the growing demands placed on it.

The step makes HASA well-situated to contribute to the ongoing building of a strong and accessible healthcare system for all South Africans."Outgoing Chairman of the Board, Dr Valodia, under whose leadership the Association played a key role in responding to the Covid pandemic, including the rollout of vaccinations, paid tribute to the previous Board saying their efforts ensured the organisation demonstrated its worth in the healthcare system when it supported the private hospital sector as it provided treatment of tens of thousands of South Africans suffering from the virus.

In particular, Dr Valodia pointed to the invaluable and wide-ranging  insights and perspectives of independent and Black-owned facilities that was provided by Neil Nair, the HASA Deputy Chairman, and that helped inform the Board’s wider and broader thinking regarding policy and related matters.Incoming Chairman, André Joseph, paid tribute to his predecessors in the position and noted that their leadership had placed the Association in a strong position to contribute to policy debates, to meet the demands placed on healthcare by the pandemic, and to help build a strong healthcare system."Under Melanie Da Costa, HASA developed a strong National Health Insurance and policy research capability that enabled us to make a contribution to health policy Green and White Papers, and to share ideas and learning and insights in numerous forums, including NEDLAC, the Presidential Health Summit, and the Public-Private Growth Initiative.

Under Dr Valodia, we built the strong and collaborative relationships necessary to work together with business and government at all levels to overcome the real health threats and challenges presented by the pandemic. All our thanks go to them and the Boards they led for their invaluable and selfless contribution of time and effort."The full list of newly-elected Hospital Association of South Africa Board members is:

POLYFLOR SA HELPS REFURBISH NGWELEZANE HOSPITAL PAEDIATRIC BURNS UNIT

Published: 07 October 2019

This past year, Polyflor SA once again partnered with the Carte Blanche Making a Difference Trust to help refurbish the paediatric facilities and services for trauma and burns patients at Ngwelezana Hospital, by donating flooring and wall protection products and services valued at close to R400 000.00. According to Tandy Coleman, CEO of Polyflor SA, this project was very dear to her team’s hearts as it cares for and treats KZN’s littlest burn and trauma victims. “Children suffering the emotional and physical trauma of burns caused by paraffin stoves, open flames or candles falling over, is a harsh reality and an occurrence that happens all too often in South Africa. Burns patients require very intense and specialised care to avoid potentially fatal infections and, in most cases, also skin grafts to repair the damaged tissue. Upon hearing of the desperate need to upgrade the paediatric facilities at Ngwelezana Hospital, we were delighted to confirm our involvement in this worthy project,” Tandy says.

About Ngwelezane Hospital

Situated approximately 20km from Richards Bay in northern KwaZulu-Natal, the Ngwelezana Hospital is a 554-bed facility that provides district, regional and tertiary services to densely populated communities from the King Cetshwayo, Umkhanyakude and Zululand districts. It is also the referral centre for children who have suffered burns, trauma requiring surgery and orthopaedic care. Prior to the refurbishment, all paediatric burns and trauma cases at Ngwelezane Hospital were treated in the Adult Burns Ward, which allocated 21 of its 38 beds for younger patients.

Small (corporate) actions making a big difference

Above and beyond the seed capital of R10.3 million contributed to the Carte Blanche Making a Difference Trust by South32 to initiate this project, Polyflor SA was one of thirty companies who generously donated material, equipment, services and advice to help realise the dream of creating a brand-new, 22-bed Paediatric Burns Unit. With the help of Sakhiwo Infrastructure Solutions, and architects the Hospital Design Group, Ngwelezana Hospital’s Paediatric Burns Unit was created as a state-of-the-art facility that is able to provide a range of care options – ranging from general patient to high care and isolated ICU rooms.  It now also has the best purpose-fit medical equipment, essential clinical dry and wet treatment areas and custom-designed air treatment facilities which are required for the optimal treatment of burns patients.

Polyflor’s donation comprised of Pearlazzo PUR sheeting in Mineral, Sunrise, Purple Crush (515 m2),Hydro Evolve 2mm in Tigris (40 m2), Polysafe Verona 2mm in Horizon Blue (80 m2), welding rods, coving and capping strips, wall guards and corner guards. Beautiful waterjet cut-outs of typical African images, such as giraffe, buck, tortoises, bunnies and clouds using the Gradus SureProtect Endure wall protection range, transformed the facility into a highly functional, yet bright, happy space that improves staff morale, aids in the small patients’ recovery process and is unlike any other hospital in the world.

Looking back at our involvement with Carte Blanche’s MAD Projects over the past 10 years, it has truly been an honour and a privilege to support such an initiative that improves and uplifts seriously neglected and under-resourced hospitals around South Africa.  It is wonderful knowing that our products have played a part in transforming the public paediatric healthcare landscape. The ripple effect of small acts of kindness, generosity and teamwork create a lasting and extraordinary impact,” Tandy concludes.

Polyflor Partners With Carte Blanche To Makes A Difference At Sebokeng Hospital

Published: 24 January 2017

Local flooring company Polyflor SA was once again in the privileged position to assist Carte Blanche with their “Making a Difference” campaign by donating a 780 m2 vinyl floor for use in the creation of an Infant High Care Ward at the Sebokeng Hospital. According to Tandy Coleman, CEO of Polyflor SA, this was the 8th year that the company has been involved in this campaign which aims to equip and renovate Paediatric Operating Theatres, ICUs and High Care Wards in selected state academic hospitals throughout South Africa.

“Supplying hospitals and healthcare facilities with top quality and specialist vinyl flooring solutions is one of our areas of expertise.  For this reason we were very excited to partner with the Carte Blanche Making a Difference Trust the first time they approached us for a corporate sponsorship many years ago.  We saw it as an ideal opportunity to give something back to the community and to help make a lasting and tangible difference where it was most needed,” Tandy says.

Background to the Carte Blanche Making a Difference Campaign

Carte Blanche is South Africa's longest running investigative journalism television programme. Eight years ago, it launched its “Making a Difference Trust”, which has since then raised well over R115 million for assisting paediatric units in government hospitals across the country. Academic hospitals are intentionally targeted as beneficiaries to ensure that future doctors can be trained at these facilities that serve large numbers of the uninsured paediatric population.

Sebokeng Hospital

The Sebokeng hospital is an 800 bed, peri-urban, regional hospital situated in Sedibeng (south of Johannesburg) that historically served a population of well over 1 million inhabitants. In recent years, the hospital has had to adjust to the growing demands of a rapidly increasing population, as job seekers move to the area in the hope of finding employment. High mortality is a challenge facing the hospital on a daily basis, as the residents of the Sedibeng District continue to face diseases such HIV and TB amongst a host of other ailments. Malnutrition in patients from the area is often a compromising factor in achieving successful health outcomes.

With the only Neonatal Unit in the area, Sebokeng Hospital delivers vitally important service for the whole district. This unit however, can only attend to children up to 28 days of age. Although designed for 36 babies, it has 60 infants at any given. Historically, babies over 28 days old could not be attended to here, and needed to be referred to the adult ICU or high care ward if a bed was available.

In response to this crisis, the Carte Blanche Making a Difference Trust (MAD), together with donor South 32, sought to address the critical demand for beds and equipment for infants over the age of 28 days old and children up to the age of 6 years, by way of creating an Infant High Care Ward at Sebokeng Hospital. Longstanding partner on several of MAD’s infrastructural revamps – Sakhiwo Health Solutions – were appointed as the MAD Trust’s Developers to overhaul a third of the Ward 3 bungalow, and to create a modern facility capable of responding to the needs of the children from community. The Hospital Design Group was tasked with the architectural design and coordination of all the specialist elements required to turn this project into a reality.

Polyflor’s Involvement

Rudolf Roos of the Hospital Design Group was the architect in charge of the renovation project, and he selected Polyflor’s Homogeneous Mystique sheeting for the unit. A modern-looking vinyl floor that was aesthetically pleasing was high on the project coordinator’s wish list. “Modern healthcare design is about creating homely, relaxed environments for patients, staff and visitors. The choice of floor covering can have a major impact on the ‘feel’ of a hospital. Vinyl flooring not only looks beautiful, but also offers one of the best environmentally sustainable options in flooring.  Because it comes in a sheet form, it provides a hygienic, impervious surface which is critical in the healthcare environment,” Tandy explains.

The installation of the donated floor by Polyflor was facilitated by Turner Pierson at a special rate. “Looking at the finished project and seeing what a difference this project has made, we are immensely proud of being associated with a group of South Africa’s leading businesses who believe in the future of our country and don’t shy away from the opportunity to do good,” Tandy concludes.

Breatheasy with Econorisk: A fundraising concert with Watershed

Published: 09 November 2016

Econorisk and Watershed have teamed up once again, this time to raise money for the Breatheasy Tracheostomy and Ventilation Homecare Programme and the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital.

On 24 November at 19h00 South African music sensation, Watershed, will take to the stage at the Rockwell Hotel theatre to perform for this life-changing charitable initiative made possible by Econorisk, a leading short-term insurance brokerage.

Developed by Sister Jane Booth, the Breatheasy Programme provides parents of children reliant on tracheostomy or artificial ventilation for breathing, with the tools and skills needed to enable their children to enjoy life at home, surrounded by their families, rather than in hospital.

Steven Hall, who brought the Breatheasy Programme to the attention of Brett Schultz, Director at Econorisk, explains how the event came about: "As a way of saying thank you for the care my mother received in hospital before she passed away, I wanted to find a cause which I could support - paying it forward, by raising awareness for an organisation helping the community and those in need. That is when I came across the Breatheasy Programme for children in South Africa whose lives are affected by breathing complications.

"I decided to take part in half and full ironman events to create an even greater awareness of the Breatheasy Programme and their challenges and to raise funding for them. When I approached Brett he was immediately on board.  He shares a passion for sport, and wanting to make a difference for those in need. Econorisk sponsored my entry fees for the 70.3 season, but Brett also wanted to get other companies involved. His vision was to create an event in which we could platform the Breatheasy Programme to create more awareness, as well as establish additional fundraising opportunities. That is how the concert with Watershed came about."

Not only is the Breatheasy Programme supporting the community and changing lives, but it is also a good fit with Econorisk’s brand values, as Brett explains:

“At Econorisk, we pride ourselves on providing holistic insurance solutions to clients, giving them peace of mind and the reassurance that they are covered in case of any unwelcome future events ... thereby helping them breathe a little easier. I therefore knew immediately that the Breatheasy Programme was the right initiative for Econorisk to back.

“I have known Craig Hinds for many years and, having worked with Watershed on a previous Econorisk fundraiser event in 2014 in support of up and coming South African Paralympic hopeful, Nicole Sanders, I approached him with the idea of another concert, which he wholeheartedly supported. And so the planning began.”

The Breatheasy with Econorisk fundraiser concert with Watershed takes place on 24 November 2016 at 18.30 for 19h00 at the Rockwell Hotel theatre in Greenpoint, Cape Town. Proceeds raised will be used to purchase vital medical equipment such as ventilators, suction machines and humidifiers for the Programme that has been caring for children with a wide range of respiratory disorders for over two decades.

“I believe that many South Africans have the desire to make a positive difference in others lives, but don’t always know how to,” says Steven. “Through this platform, we are giving people the opportunity to make this difference – and to have a good time whilst doing so.”

Brett concludes: “Whilst it may come naturally to many of us, for some the simple act of breathing is sadly difficult or even impossible. Econorisk is incredibly proud to support the Breatheasy Programme and we invite companies and individuals to enjoy the sounds of Watershed for this life-changing cause.”
