Telemedicine Company Focused on Sexual Health Lands in SA!

Published: 13 July 2021

New platform set to transform access to sexual healthcare across South Africa with a game-changing prescription and delivery service.

Local entrepreneur leaves London law firm to tackle outdated healthcare system in South Africa by launching a subscription-based, hassle-free and affordable platform for sexual healthcare needs. - Cape Town, South Africa - July 2021

THE PROBLEM

It’s 2021. We can order everything and anything online; and yet accessing vital, everyday sexual health products in South Africa is a long, tedious and expensive process. Consider the current system women go through to procure birth control: take time off work for an appointment at an awkward time, queue in traffic, flip through 2-year-old magazines in a waiting room, pay the doctor, queue in more traffic to the pharmacy, pay for more parking, stand in line, pay for the prescription… and repeat the last steps every month to collect your medication, and repeat the whole process every 3-6 months when your prescription runs out. On average the whole ordeal can cost around R1200 for 3 months and several grey hairs. Seems a bit outdated, doesn’t it?

Inconvenience and cost aren’t the only factors limiting access to sexual healthcare. Across South Africa, contraceptives, menstruation and sexual health carry stigmas that aren’t easy to shake. A lack of sexual and reproductive health (SRH) education provokes shaming, fear and sexual violence, and furthers the taboo of topics that need open conversations and acceptance within our communities. These obstacles are further exacerbated by the effects of COVID-19. Job losses have caused financial strains on individuals and their families, SRH clinics were closed to make room for COVID patients, services halted and fundings cut. Additionally, the fear of the pandemic and risk of infection has deterred patients from attending their regular check-ups, doctor appointments and collecting medication from pharmacies.

THE SOLUTION

Founded by London lawyer Alexander Schmid, who has returned to his home country to address the above problems after an ex-girlfriend complained about the tedious and expensive road to birth control, Contro plans to tackle the inequalities South Africans face to access sexual healthcare. Partnered with a team of skilled developers and forward-thinking, specialist doctors, Schmid has designed and built a game-changing online platform that is about to revolutionise the healthcare industry in South Africa. Launching nationwide in partnership with South Africa's largest national courier pharmacy Medipost, Contro simplifies and streamlines an affordable route to sexual healthcare for all. Seems too good to be true! Customers choose their product of choice on Contro’s webpage, answer a short and secure online health questionnaire, and book a once-off video consultation with one of Contro’s licenced and registered Partner Doctors at a time that suits them.

The Partner Doctor will assess and answer any questions the customer may have, before prescribing, in their expert impartial opinion, the medication best suited to the customer’s individual needs and financial capabilities. Working as a ‘cancel anytime’ subscription-based model, customers’ medication is dispensed and delivered free of charge by Medipost every month in discreet packaging. Contro’s platform automatically sends the prescriptions to the Partner Doctors for approval, saving the customer from frequently re-visiting the doctor. All in all, Contro’s platform can save their customers on average R400 every three months while offering you the same security and on-hand support you’d get from your family doctor. Furthermore, Contro’s service is discreet, non-judgemental and non-biased. All Partner Doctors are qualified, currently practising and personally vetted based on their aligned belief to increase accessibility to sexual healthcare. Customers can also use their existing medical aid plan to cover their medication costs.

THE VISION

“74% of millennials prefer telehealth visits to in-person doctors exams” (GlobalMed)The launch of Contro coincides with a general global trend popularising telemedicine and online medical services. Utilising technology allows for the provision of remote services aimed at replacing or supplementing existing in-person clinical offerings. Telemedicine primarily offers convenience from the comfort of your own home and is cost-effective while still offering the highest-quality medical assessments. The ease of online communications also increases patient engagement by encouraging more frequent conversations between patient and doctor, while simultaneously making follow-ups effortless. The value of a platform like Contro to a country like South Africa, where existing processes are outdated, expensive and time-consuming, could mark the seminal inauguration of a much-needed modernised medical offering across the country.

Launching with an offering of birth control and erectile dysfunction treatment, Contro facilitates access to over 35 brands of the contraceptive pill and ED medication through their Partner Pharmacy Medipost. Contro plans to expand its offering to other sexual health and confidence products to give their customers' access to hair loss treatment, preventative HIV treatment (PrEP), STI testing kits and thrush treatment. Contro is driven to change the negative narrative surrounding these products, and empower every individual with the choice of protecting themselves and their sexual health at any stage of their life. Contro is an online prescription and delivery service for sexual health and confidence products.

Launched in May 2021, Contro’s game-changing subscription-based platform offers customers an affordable, convenient and discreet means to access and take control of their sexual healthcare. Contro is headquartered in Cape Town, South Africa.

POLYFLOR SA HELPS REFURBISH NGWELEZANE HOSPITAL PAEDIATRIC BURNS UNIT

Published: 07 October 2019

This past year, Polyflor SA once again partnered with the Carte Blanche Making a Difference Trust to help refurbish the paediatric facilities and services for trauma and burns patients at Ngwelezana Hospital, by donating flooring and wall protection products and services valued at close to R400 000.00. According to Tandy Coleman, CEO of Polyflor SA, this project was very dear to her team’s hearts as it cares for and treats KZN’s littlest burn and trauma victims. “Children suffering the emotional and physical trauma of burns caused by paraffin stoves, open flames or candles falling over, is a harsh reality and an occurrence that happens all too often in South Africa. Burns patients require very intense and specialised care to avoid potentially fatal infections and, in most cases, also skin grafts to repair the damaged tissue. Upon hearing of the desperate need to upgrade the paediatric facilities at Ngwelezana Hospital, we were delighted to confirm our involvement in this worthy project,” Tandy says.

About Ngwelezane Hospital

Situated approximately 20km from Richards Bay in northern KwaZulu-Natal, the Ngwelezana Hospital is a 554-bed facility that provides district, regional and tertiary services to densely populated communities from the King Cetshwayo, Umkhanyakude and Zululand districts. It is also the referral centre for children who have suffered burns, trauma requiring surgery and orthopaedic care. Prior to the refurbishment, all paediatric burns and trauma cases at Ngwelezane Hospital were treated in the Adult Burns Ward, which allocated 21 of its 38 beds for younger patients.

Small (corporate) actions making a big difference

Above and beyond the seed capital of R10.3 million contributed to the Carte Blanche Making a Difference Trust by South32 to initiate this project, Polyflor SA was one of thirty companies who generously donated material, equipment, services and advice to help realise the dream of creating a brand-new, 22-bed Paediatric Burns Unit. With the help of Sakhiwo Infrastructure Solutions, and architects the Hospital Design Group, Ngwelezana Hospital’s Paediatric Burns Unit was created as a state-of-the-art facility that is able to provide a range of care options – ranging from general patient to high care and isolated ICU rooms.  It now also has the best purpose-fit medical equipment, essential clinical dry and wet treatment areas and custom-designed air treatment facilities which are required for the optimal treatment of burns patients.

Polyflor’s donation comprised of Pearlazzo PUR sheeting in Mineral, Sunrise, Purple Crush (515 m2),Hydro Evolve 2mm in Tigris (40 m2), Polysafe Verona 2mm in Horizon Blue (80 m2), welding rods, coving and capping strips, wall guards and corner guards. Beautiful waterjet cut-outs of typical African images, such as giraffe, buck, tortoises, bunnies and clouds using the Gradus SureProtect Endure wall protection range, transformed the facility into a highly functional, yet bright, happy space that improves staff morale, aids in the small patients’ recovery process and is unlike any other hospital in the world.

Looking back at our involvement with Carte Blanche’s MAD Projects over the past 10 years, it has truly been an honour and a privilege to support such an initiative that improves and uplifts seriously neglected and under-resourced hospitals around South Africa.  It is wonderful knowing that our products have played a part in transforming the public paediatric healthcare landscape. The ripple effect of small acts of kindness, generosity and teamwork create a lasting and extraordinary impact,” Tandy concludes.

NKANYEZINI HEALTH POST OPENS DOORS TO VITAL PRIMAY HEALTH CARE

Published: 04 October 2019

AfriSam, South Africa’s leading construction materials group, in partnership with the Department of Mineral Resources, KwaZulu-Natal Department of Health and the Mkhambathini Local Municipality, is making essential health care services accessible to community members with the opening of a newly constructed health post in Nkanyezini.

The hand-over of this facility was celebrated at a ceremony hosted at the Nkanyezini Health Post on Friday 27 September, attended by the MEC of Health, the Mayor of Mkhambathini Municipality, Acting Regional Manager for the Department of Mineral Resources, AfriSam dignitaries, as well as community leaders and members from Nkanyezi and surrounding communities.

AfriSam’s relationship with the Department of Health goes back a number of years, and in 2017, the company heeded the call to partner in the construction of the Health Post in our host communities where there has been a challenge in accessing primary health care services.

“In support of our vision of ‘Building Communities for a positive African future’, we are committed to working with our host communities and investing in projects that will deliver on this vision. We are proud to have partnered with our stakeholders in the construction of the Nkanyezi Health Post, providing community members with the necessary facilities, resources and services that will make a positive and sustainable difference to their lives and overall well-being”, says Rob Wessels, Chief Executive Officer of AfriSam.

The Nkanyezini Health Post is strategically located to provide easy access to community members from Nkanyezi, Ntweka, Ezimbileni, Emasangweni, KwaToni, Lion Park, Miaaz Road and Manderston. Approximately 8 000 community members are expected to benefit from this health post.

AfriSam invested significantly in the construction of the Nkanyezi Health Post which consists of a sheltered waiting area for patients, two consulting rooms for nurses, an air-conditioned medicine room, a furnished kitchenette, five ablution facilities and dispensing window and counter.

Constructed on land made available by the Manyavu Traditional Council, the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Health will ensure the operation of the Nkanyezi Health Post will provide all movable furniture, medical equipment accessories and personnel. The Mkhambathini Municipality will provide the required services to the Health Post.

The Nkanyezi Health Post will act as a primary health care facility to provide clinical as well as public health services, awareness, and advocacy for important local health issues.

The Nkanyezini Health Post will serve as a mobile service stopping point where a team of healthcare workers led by a Professional Nurse will render a comprehensive primary healthcare service package weekly.

It is also a designated Central Chronic Medication Dispensing and Distribution (CCMD) point where patients who are on chronic medicine can collect their pre-packed medication parcels instead of going to the clinic and waiting. In addition, it will form part of the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Health’s Phila Mntwana program, promoting health and preventing diseases among children from the community.

AfriSam’s commitment to the project is in line with the company’s overall community involvement mission, which is to understand the needs of our host communities and make meaningful and sustainable contributions to their upliftment.

In recent years, AfriSam has been in involved in many CSR initiatives in the Pietermaritzburg area. The company successfully constructed the Honeyville Community Hall and uMsilinga Primary School Hall and has renovated the computer center and science laboratory at Panorama Primary school.

AfriSam also provides training and development to qualifying enterprises to grow and strengthen their businesses to a level where they can trade with AfriSam and other companies, in turn transferring skills to local community members and creating employment for the youth.

New community health platform brings primary care to millions

Published: 10 October 2016

42 million South Africans rely on an under-resourced public health care sector. Inadequate access to health care perpetuate the inequalities that exist, and the nation faces four epidemics namely, infectious diseases - especially HIV/AIDs and TB, non-communicable diseases (such as diabetes and cardiovascular diseases), high levels of violence and injury, and mother and child illness and death - all linked to, and due to persistent social inequality.

Health care in South Africa is increasingly hospital-centred, disease focussed and specialised. This model has led to significant advances in medicine, has improved access to health care and proven profitable, but it excludes large segments of the population as it cannot provide universal access.

The Department of Family Medicine at the University of Pretoria has created a community-orientated primary care (COPC) model for today’s South Africa. “COPC is a geographically-based, collaborative approach to health that begins with individuals, and families in their homes," explains research lead Professor Jannie Hugo.

The solution

COPC is primary care where health care professionals from different specialist fields and approaches work together with organisations and patients in defined communities. The result is a systematic identification and response to health and health-related needs to improve wellbeing. "COPC is an established concept, but our solution is novel in that it blends academic rigour, public health focus, clinical care and technological innovation and a transformative platform for improved society-wide health outcomes," says Professor Hugo.   The power of the model rests in its comprehensive care that integrates the home, clinics, GPs and hospitals to improve individuals’ ability to manage their health consistently. The full impact of the approach is set to revolutionise health care in South Africa.

AitaHealth is a smartphone application which supports the newest COPC model and is used by community healthcare workers in the field. Modules in the app collect patient information, guides responses and plans treatment and future visits. "The app guides community health workers through the process, and the information entered guides action, such as treatment or testing,” explains Professor Hugo.

The backend of the app has a sophisticated, web-enabled infrastructure so all information and interventions are available to managers to plan service and delivery, and support their team in real-time. AitaHealth is linked to a patient record system using Synaxon to provide continuity of information and care by connecting people in their homes to professionals in clinics and hospitals.

Education is also enabled through the application and is critical in healthcare, and COPC in particular. "To equip healthcare workers and professionals with the knowledge and skills required to carry out the complex tasks of COPC, is necessary for success and sustainable development,” remarks Professor Hugo. Continuous work integrated learning is built into the implementation plan and is supported by curricula, face-to-face training and specifically developed learning materials. Through workplace learning, health workers transition to higher qualifications and professional development to empower and upskill community members.

The collection of information also provides robust data on the real health situation and services in communities. This kind of information means teams can tailor health care to individuals in defined areas, and can be used in basic and applied research. And will be some of the most robust clinical and epidemiological data ever recorded.

As a result of this work, the National Research Fund is funding 14 masters and 12 doctorate students who are working on various aspects of learning in community health to improve the model, quality of care and the general level of capability in health, including health research.

Looking to the future

The project is already supporting the health of communities around Tshwane and is replicable and scalable, which means that it can be extended throughout South Africa. Because this is such a sustainable and affordable community-based health care system, millions more can benefit from this new approach both in terms of wellbeing and upskilling, to create more employable citizens who can also contribute to their community’s health.
