At least a third of adults are not getting enough sleep, impacting detrimentally on a range of health processes, including mood, energy and concentration, according to research.

One US survey, conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), found that almost 35 percent of adults are getting less than seven hours of sleep a night, sometimes leading to bad moods, low energy, difficulty in concentrating and a general inability to function adequately.

The survey indicated that sleep deprivation may increase the risk of several chronic health conditions, while other research indicates that sleep-deprived people report an increase in negative moods and poor concentration, focus and alertness.

The US Sleep Foundation says improved sleep may boost both short- and long-term cognitive performance.

SA health expert, Giulia Criscuolo said the current pandemic had upset routines and sleep cycles and the lack of adequate rest was impacting on cognitive abilities and concentration.  “Aim for at least eight hours of restorative sleep a night and take steps to improve sleep quality. African Utility Week returns to Cape Town in May

Energy expert Ted Blom believes distributed generation will slice electricity costs by up to 90% for the average household.

Blom is a speaker and advisory board member of the 18th African Utility Week that is taking place from 15-17 May in Cape Town, South Africa.

In the run-up to the event, he says in an interview that “South Africa and the world is at the precipice of revolutionary developments in energy generation and distribution, and the next 5 -10 years will render such dramatic changes that today's energy supply chain will not be recognisable, especially with the advent of distributed generation, which in many instances will kill off centralised ‘bulk’ generation and distribution. I believe this move will slice electricity costs by up to 90% for the average household, and be a boom industry for participants in the energy revolution, with concomitant radical improvements in standards of living.”

Parliamentary investigation into Eskom
Last year, the independent energy expert also testified before the South African Parliament’s inquiry into Eskom’s governance: “the Parliamentary Energy subcommittee investigation is a refreshing attempt to decipher what has gone wrong at Eskom since it was ‘commercialised’ in 2001. However, any results will only highlight that prosecution and clean-ups are long overdue, as the committee is powerless to take punitive action against wrongdoers.”

Blom also conducted forensic reviews on the Medupi, Ingula and Kusile power station contracts, “but that work is far from complete and dramatically short of resources. Another milestone is the completion of the legal preparatory work to have the first Tegeta coal supply agreement terminated, but again the action has been suspended for unknown reasons. The other two Tegeta coal supply agreements should also be terminated, but it seems South Africans do not have the political staying power to exercise their rights, with the result that Tegeta has managed to get Eskom to further increase coal supply prices, beyond the already outrageous prices- which eventually feed into new higher electricity prices. So while we appear to be winning on the ‘small stage’, we are falling further behind on the ‘Big Stage’".

“Nuclear deal will be pushed through”
With regards to the pending decision on the nuclear deal, Ted Blom says: “I am convinced that the nuclear deal will be pushed through the moment South African citizens take their ‘eye off the ball’. Zuma's government has already confirmed that it is beholden to the Russian deal, and their delivery of those contracts to Russia is allegedly behind. So expect renewed vigour from Eskom and the Department of Energy to bulldoze these through.”

Offering excellent characteristics for a wide variety of applications, the V-TC and V-TCU series of aluminium electrolytic capacitors are specialised miniaturised components offering ripple current and high capacitance.  

The V-TC and V-TCU series are based on the proven V-TP series from Panasonic, but benefit from 1.2 to 1.5 times higher ripple current capabilities at +125°C. In addition, the V-TCU parts also offer 1.2 to 2.2 times larger capacitance values, ranging from 220 up to 680µF, while also downsizing by one aluminium-can size, for example from G to F size or from F to D8. The surface-mount capacitors feature a footprint ranging from 6.3 x 7.7mm up to 10 x 10.2mm, and typical lifetimes of 2000 hours for smaller can sizes and 3000 hours for larger devices. 

The HL series electric double layer capacitors (EDLC) are radial components that come in a variety of capacitances ranging from 2.5F to 100F. The components are ideal for applications that require large discharge currents including backup power supplies for servers and storage devices, auxiliary power supplies for solar-powered products such as street lighting, and driver-assist applications for actuators in a variety of markets.  

The HL series capacitors offer low resistance combined with guaranteed long life over a wide temperature range from –40°C to +65°C. They are wound radial-lead devices, which can achieve far greater capacitance compared to aluminium electrolytic capacitors – by a factor of up to 1000 times more.

They also deliver superior charge/discharge performance compared with secondary batteries, offering rapid charge and discharge over more than 500,000 cycles, as well as offering exceptional ageing characteristics leading to lifetimes of over a decade. The V-TC/U and HL series are now available from RS.

AC/DC coil TeSys D Green contactors offer backward compatibility with current TeSys D accessories and support products 

Johannesburg, South Africa, 22 June, 2017 - RS Components (RS), the trading brand of Electrocomponents plc (LSE:ECM), the global distributor for engineers, has introduced a new series of AC/DC coil compatible contactors from Schneider Electric.

Schneider has upgraded its TeSys D range with the TeSys D Green range that features lower energy consumption and AC/DC coils, meaning every coil can be energised with either AC or DC current.  Making it easy for customers to upgrade and gain the improved energy efficiencies, the new range is backward compatible with all current TeSys D accessories and support products and offers consistent low-energy contactors that handle 9 to 80A, and cover control voltages from 24 to 500V AC or DC.  

Designed to take up less space in machines and electrical cabinets, the range offers a number of advantages. For example, low control current leads to lower energy consumption with a reduced coil power of just 0.5W at 24V DC, making a major contribution to the energy efficiency of a machine.

In addition, a special contactor product that handles 40 to 65A and can connect directly to PLC control, as the device can be driven by a common 24V DC / 500mA static output, means that a relay interface is no longer required.  

Meeting the SEMI F47 standard, the range offers higher resistance to voltage surges and grid disruptions to provider higher uptime. The contactors also offer reduced contact bounce as the devices retain the same high resistance to shock and vibration as the TeSys D range. 

Other advantages include a constant closing and opening time, regardless of voltage fluctuation, delivering reliable repetitive actuation. Also, when maintenance is required one TeSys D Green can replace many standard contactors. The Schneider Electric TeSys D Green is now available from RS.
