Gamification app summarizes the latest water crisis stats for Cape Town

Published: 05 February 2018

Last year in March AUX conceptualized and built the TapOff app – an experiment to inspire people of Cape Town to save water. They wanted to make it easy for residents to have access to the latest and most important information, but also to promote the idea of per-person-per-day usage by household. At the time this information wasn't readily available. They also wanted to test a simple gamification idea to see if it would inspire people to take action and share ideas.

“At the time (March 2017) we felt like the drought and cape town water crisis was a great real-world problem to tackle. It seemed like a rewarding and worthy problem to tackle with real social impact.”

Client work got in the way during the course of 2017 and the project was put on ice. Then, in November 2017, the studio decided it was still a worthwhile project and completed the first version. We officially trickled the link to social media on the 27th January. Since then the app has been featured on Memeburn.com and has also been highlighted in both the Google PlayStore and the AppStore as a top app in the Free Education category last week.

At the moment, only residents with CoCT billls can calculate their per-person-per-day usage using the app calculator, and then post that result to their suburb leaderboard. Some people have rightly pointed out that this excludes residents without a water bill. The developers provided the following response to users in the app store:

“You've raised a great point here which we need to consider. We decided to release the product before it contained all the possible features we could build, otherwise we might never have launched at all, and we didn’t want that. We realise there are things that we have not conquered but we will get there as we gather feedback like this, learn and adapt. Plans to capture water usage in a different way are already underway.”

So far, the response has been great, and there are already hundreds of users who have posted their water use to the Cape Town leaderboard. Last week an update was released so that users per-person-per-day calculation is more visible and people can also navigate to their suburb. All users are created anonymously using a unique and creative naming system.

AUX is a product design studio based in Cape Town. They work with established businesses and start-ups providing naming, identity design, ux design and rapid-prototyping.

Get Ready to Refresh Your Space

Published: 11 June 2017

Re-Freshed and Re-Inspired

Home innovation is key at this year’s ECR House & Garden Show

This year’s ECR House and Garden Show has undergone a design and décor overhaul, featuring a radical new line-up alongside established house and home legends.   MSQ Interior Design have taken command of the entrance way. Hanging gardens and a bespoke tree sculpture welcome to enter a world filled with ideas to refresh your space, inside and out.

Small space living is a movement sweeping the globe. ‘The Apartment’ by Joao Cabral of Route 3 Design Studio showcases its finest innovations. Set inside a 12m shipping container and featuring startling small space functional design blended with the newest in smart technology; its aim is to inspire a new approach to space, and to comfortable living.  At the KAPOW Designer Café presented by Dulux, KZN’s top interior decorators and designers will present their personal visions for home creation. Seven cameo stands, built on a pairing between designers and local fabric houses, form blank canvases on which new home design dreams are built.  Sustainability is key and the African Green Revolution pierces this theme precisely. The home is made exclusively from recycled products. Here inspiration is spun into walls built with two litre plastic bottles, floors sculpted from plastic bottle lids, and a rooftop garden growing from wooden palette beds.

The installation will include information on how to build using home waste.  Cutting edge technology is on the other side of the same sustainability coin. Brett and Scott from Uber Haus have created a fully automated home ready to fire up curious minds, blending the latest from home system solution specialists Legrand and the elegant Springlights into a home straight from the future. “Our aim is to refresh and inspire, inside and out,” said new Show Director Cairey Baxter-Bruce. “Judging by the buzz in our own office I know we’re succeeding! We cannot wait to welcome our first visitors to a brand new House and Garden experience.”

EduOne Redesign Launch

Published: 04 April 2017

EduOne is an education technology startup that has captured the attention of over 1.5 million South Africans, 2000 teachers and has been recognised by a number of exclusive international startup societies for their work.

A big day has arrived for the team at EduOne, based in Cape Town, to launch new versions of two of their most popular websites. This is the biggest single launch for the company to-date and includes major structural and design changes to both EduConnect and EduFunding.

The redesign and development of new features on these sites began in late 2016. Inspired by user generated insights and industry best practices, the redesign is aimed at improving user experience, data usage and usability for site visitors.

“It has been a number of late nights and early mornings over the past few months, but I’m very glad to be at the launch date with two quick, stable and ridiculously good looking  websites. It’s a job well done by the team,” says James Kieser, the company's CTO.

This launch is one of the first of what will be many iterations in a new design approach for the company’s products. In addition, one can expect a number of new features and entire products to be released in 2017.

For a more detailed view on the changes to EduOne’s sites on 31 March 2017, see a previous press release for the launch. The EduOne team encourages users to continue sending through feedback on their work through this form.

Proudly showcasing an exclusive preview of their upcoming 2017 innovations, Geberit will once again be exhibiting at the Homemakers Expo in Johannesburg, taking place from the 23rd to the 26th of February 2017. On display at the exhibition will be a preview of their exciting products from their new Geberit Bathroom Collection. Each series in the Geberit bathroom collection has been designed for both private bathrooms and public sanitary facilities.

Geberit have applied their vast knowledge gained from decades of experience, together with their passion for design and technology to inspire their new bathroom collection. You will find that their products are not just beautiful to look at, but are a perfect balance of elegant design and outstanding function, illustrating the limitless possibilities created when Design meets Function.

The Geberit Citterio bathroom series combines puristic contours with organically flowing shapes, resulting in an unmistakable design language. It’s a premium bathroom series with remarkable originality, created with timeless elegance and quality, reflecting the unique design hallmarks of the renowned Italian architect and designer, Antonio Citterio.

The Geberit Xeno² bathroom series is synonymous with architectonic design minimalism. This bathroom series boasts a perfectly coordinated product range of intelligent, well-thought-through elements.

The Geberit iCon bathroom series offers an extensive range of ceramic appliances and bathroom furniture. The series shines with its linear design and is also impressively versatile.

The iCon xs series helps to maintain clear room architecture even in small bathrooms, offering a shorter projection range allowing for more space.

With its ornate lines and contemporary design, the Geberit Smyle bathroom series brings harmony and lightness into family and guest bathrooms. With a clear sense of order and efficient use of a room, Geberit Smyle achieves the highest level of convenience in the bathroom for any structural situation.

Taking centre stage will be the Geberit DuoFresh system, paired with a Geberit Rimfree toilet from the Citterio series. The Geberit DuoFresh system will be a visual, working display so that viewers can fully understand the functions of the DuoFresh system, coupled with the flushing performance of a Geberit Rimfree toilet. Geberit DuoFresh is an innovative odour extraction system that keeps a bathroom smelling fresh, cleverly located behind the wall, integrated with the cistern. Odours are extracted from inside the toilet bowl, purified through an active carbon filter and gently released again as fresh air.

In addition, the stand will also showcase the slim Geberit CleanLine shower channels which are very popular with their timeless linear design. Thanks to their innovative technology, they are easy to install and even easier to clean. Alongside these innovations will be Geberit's wide selection of actuator plates. More and more customers are attaching importance to having bathrooms where designs, colours and materials are in harmony with one another. Geberit ensures that they offer consumers a wide selection of actuator plates to complement their bathroom design and style.

New Marketing Agency launches in Lesotho and South Africa to support brand owners from production to shopper

Published: 21 July 2016

Priority Corporation, a new marketing company has opened its doors in Cape Town South Africa and Lesotho. The company’s specialty is on helping SME’s to launch and market new and existing products inland and across borders.

Priority Corporation is a group of street smart professionals with concentrated backgrounds in marketing gathered from serving Non-Governmental Organisation’s and independent Blue Chip Companies. The wealth of expertise provided by the team is complemented by latest innovative infrastructure, a nationwide and international footprint and a network of power agents across every major distribution channel.

The results of our Current SME’s Sales and Marketing Review indicates that 67% of SME’s do not market themselves and the very same alludes that the absence of marketing is the reason for sluggish growth and incurring losses instead of profits. Priority Corporation has been incorporated to address this problem which is causing closure of SME’s daily or keeping the remainder as Small Businesses without growth forever.

Priority Corporation Managing Director, Zwelithini Matsoso Says, “SME’s lose focus on what put them in the business in the first place which is selling and generating income and marketing is the area in which they need to capitalize on to make sales and revenues, marketing is like sowing a 5Kg of maize seeds in order to harvest 10 silos.” “We therefore work with brand developers, manufacturers, and retail outlets to ensure smooth transition from product packaging, product launch, product distribution, to consumer purchase all under one roof, this is the entire ecosystem that a brand requires to succeed.”

Matsoso Continues to say “As we built the brands and help them be cash generating machines for their owners, it is equally important that the bottom line performance can render sustainable brands, those which will be able to generate money even after decades not once off. We are even happier that we will be providing all our services at a reasonable amount for all SME’s, but most importantly we will be taking small business out of being small businesses to being global and legacy businesses not forgetting Batho Pele (People first)in our service offering.” Says Matsoso.
