UJ Weekend of Jazz

Published: 08 May 2018

UJ Arts & Culture, a division of the Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture (FADA), is proud to announce its inaugural UJ Weekend of Jazz, in celebration of Africa month, which is set to take place from 25–27 May 2018 at the University of Johannesburg.

Much of what is recognised as South African jazz and dance music originated in the back streets of Sophiatown. Its roots – both here and abroad – reside in revolution, in everyday people trying to make sense of their worlds. The University of Johannesburg (UJ) has been the site of much progressive negotiation around new ways of thinking and doing things, with campuses literally down the road from those spaces of historical and creative significance. So it is fitting that in this time of reimagining and reshaping our country, an institution, which is itself a place of learning and revolution, should bring to life a celebration of new engagements with the jazz tradition.

In the youthful and high-paced urban environment of the University campus, there is a particularly intellectual and artistic hunger for new means of engaging with ‘old’ ideas, and this manifests in all types of creative expression. Not only is the focus on fashion and design, around new ways of repurposing pieces from the past, but so too do we turn the spotlight on music, which is particularly relevant in the context of a genre traditionally associated with experimentation and pushing boundaries.  In line with UJ Arts & Culture’s strategic focus on creating sites for different engagement opportunities, and offering experiences with the potential to create positive change, there is the recognition that jazz as a genre is also transforming.  Urban jazz is an emerging sub-genre, borne of combining traditional elements of the form with other genres of music, in search of the ‘grey areas’, of new and accessible forms. Often associated with physical expression in the form of dancing, those in the know will recognise the inclusion of some of the timing and flavours of drum ‘n’ bass, and layering of hard funk and ‘chilled vibes’. But mostly, this is music designed to be enjoyed by the masses!

As such – far from a stuffy experience of formal jazz performances – this three-day programme will offer an experiential feast of sound and fun, with ticket prices aimed at making the event accessible, to encourage audiences to experience different aspects of this important and historical musical form.  The event will be curated by musical talent showcase Jozi Unsigned, and – testament to their unwavering commitment in support of the growth of live music in Johannesburg – the high-quality offering will vary from somewhat more ‘conventional’ jazz concerts, ranging from bands bucking the old rules and experimenting with new ways of making music.

A specially-selected student jazz band will have the opportunity to take to the stage alongside some of the country’s best; ‘aficionados’ of the future will have the chance to learn a thing (or three) from classes with some jazz masters. Audience members interested in an immersive experience will have those opportunities too. The line includes; Tlale Makhene accompanied by the UJ Jazz band, Sun Xa Experiment, The Muffinz, Bombshelter Beast, Mandla Mlangeni and the TRC, Jazz Cats, Zoe Modiga and Steve Dyer's "Mantswe a Marabi.

The UJ Weekend of Jazz will take place at the Art Centre on the University of Johannesburg’s Auckland Park campus in Johannesburg from 25–27 May 2018.Both day passes and weekend passes will be available, with student concessions for each – ticket prices start at R120. The full programme will be released on www.uj.ac.za/arts.

Blanko - Restaurant opens at the Alphen in Constantia.

Published: 18 January 2017

This contemporary new Italian eatery is located in the height of luxury at the iconic Alphen Hotel in Constantia. Blanko boasts a vibrant “all day” atmosphere, where locals can eat and drink in a series of beautifully designed spaces within a heritage location.

Blanko’s all-white gallery-style space reflects the contemporary style synonymous with the Kove Collection. Italian marble tables, a dramatically-lit white bar and textured furnishings all highlighted in ambient lighting provide the perfect backdrop to the sumptuous food.

The outside terrace with a central water feature is the ideal spot for a meal with friends or family. Group Head Chef, Amber-May Deetlefs delivers her culinary philosophy in her unique Italian style, “I believe the best food is prepared from the heart – it not only has to taste good, it should be something sincere and uncomplicated”.

In a first for Cape Town, in collaboration with Cape Town’s Goodman Gallery, the walls of Blanko feature work from some of South Africa’s greatest contemporary artists.

MD of the Kove Collection, Paul Kovensky has a passion and appreciation of art which is evident in every aspect of Blanko. The restaurant’s white interiors provide the perfect canvas to compliment great art.

Artists who feature include Diane Victor, William Kentridge, Brett Murray, Mikhael Subotzky, Robert Hodgins and Walter Oltmann. Blanko is the freshest addition to The Kove Collection’s hotel & restaurant group.

The Kove Collection creates personalised experiences, highlighting fresh food, good service and innovative design and culture, while upholding a strong, sustainable approach towards the people and environment they operate in.

Kovensky is excited about the opportunity, “The current social “buzz” in Cape Town, paired with the locals need for exciting new places to eat, Blanko is the ideal concept for foodies & families.

We believe Blanko’s contemporary concept provides a charming contrast and antidote to the “old world” architecture and ambience of the Alphen Hotel, bringing a breath of fresh air to the neighbourhood.

We’ve always placed a high value on offering our guests the best, most memorable experience possible. And Blanko is simply a natural evolution of this”.

Open from Monday to Sunday, 12h00 to 24h00. To make a booking contact: +27 (0) 21 795 6313

Online Buying and Selling Reinvented

Published: 23 January 2015

SOUTH AFRICA – Jan, 2015 – After much anticipation LiveBids Auctions has been launched in South Africa. LiveBids offers a unique online buying and selling platform that incorporates different aspects of various social media.

This means that a choice of interests, following friend’s, search hundreds of products while buying items for a fraction of the cost and selling them to make real profits.

LiveBids aims to help buyers and sellers fully connect in trade with seamless transactions. It is an online marketplace that is simple, interactive and social. It allows users to experience a real-time marketplace, buy products lower than the market value and socially follow buyers and sellers.

Two formats are used, namely online auctions and pay-per-bid. The first of these is the traditional online auction model, where items are sold to the highest bidder. The second is a pay-per-bid model, where would-be buyers purchase credits to bid on items. These credits go to the seller, which is how it is possible to purchase big-ticket items for nominal amounts.

The founders of LiveBids, Rory Vollmer and Paul Hoft, explain that “the idea was to create an online marketplace that was simple, interactive and social, helping buyers and sellers connect and trade. The marketplace is completely people driven”.

Asking For It? | an exhibition by Maria Patrizi at StateoftheART

Published: 10 October 2014

StateoftheART is proud to present 'Asking For It?' an exhibition of paintings by Maria Patrizi on the Exhibition Wall.

This series of work is the artist's response to the excuse often given that clothes are responsible for rape. Women displaying their femininity and/or sensuality, are considered to be handing out open invitations to being verbally or sexually abused.

"By moulding clothing into evocative and anonymous female forms, the artist has given the clothes a voice, "we are just clothes, so what exactly are we asking for?"" - Maria Patrizi

Patrizi's work has often been compared to photographic negatives. "At first the comparison surprised me but after some thought, I couldn't believe I hadn't made the connection myself" she says.

The starting point for all her paintings are photographs that she have taken and then manipulated. De-cluttering and reducing the images so that she can focus solely on the shapes she finds relevant.

Opens 6th November @6pm
