Get Out and About on the Next GTP Urban Trail Run

Published: 26 February 2019

The Greater Tygerberg Partnership (GTP) is hosting the next event in its urban trail run series on 7 April 2019. The challenge is open to experienced and new runners from all across Cape Town, on a beautiful trail through Bellville’s public green spaces. Launched at the end of last year, the GTP Urban Trail Run traces a route starting in Tielman Marais Park, through Jack Muller Park and up to Tyger Valley, linking and activating Bellville’s green spaces.

The event features a 5-kilometre family run and a more arduous, challenging 14-kilometre run. Most of the route is off the tarmac, offering participants a chance to enjoy beautiful natural surroundings in the heart of the city. Fantastic prizes will be awarded to the top three male and female runners in each category and exciting lucky draw prizes will be on offer during the day. Every runner will receive a water-wise plant as a medal in recognition of their participation.

Warren Hewitt, GTP CEO explains the principle behind the GTP Urban Trail Run: “Quality public spaces are an important component in building cohesive urban communities. We want to see people using the natural green areas in our city every day, and not only on special event days. The GTP Urban Trail is a great way to introduce people to the green spaces that Bellville has to offer.” Bellville has 236 661 square metres of green parks. Tielman Marais Park is one link in the green chain of parks in Bellville that connect Elizabeth Park to Jack Muller Park and the green spaces leading to the Doordekraal Dam, behind Willowbridge.Entrance to the Bellville Urban Trail is R60 per runner for the 5km event, and R100 per runner for the 14km event.

Each entrant is asked to bring old and unused running gear and other clothes, which will be donated to local charities to bring dignity and care to the more vulnerable in our community. A percentage of the proceeds of the Bellville Urban Trail will be used to maintain and upgrade the running route to ensure maximum enjoyment for everyone in the future. After the event, the urban trail route will remain open for runners, walkers and strollers who want good quality, safe running, walking and leisure routes in their city.

Food trucks and other stalls will be available on the day, selling food, drink and other goodies. Participants can register for the event on Quicket at http://qkt.io/1UioDq.

Plantronics Backbeat FIT Series for active fitness, available in South Africa

Published: 14 March 2018

We’ve all been there: you’ve stretched, your running shoes are on, you’ve lined up the playlist that will help you more fully enjoy your workout, then…your headphones are nowhere to be found.

A wave of disappointment washes over you. You’re left with two frustrating choices: the poorly sized set that came free with your phone and you’re pretty sure you stuffed in the junk drawer (your rhythm disrupted as you push one tinny-sounding headphone back in your sweaty ear), or the simple sound of your breathing in your ears and your footfalls on the road.

Purists might love the latter. Sometimes you need more.

As more and more South Africans focus on fitness, it does not matter whether you’re a hip-hop fan or a classical music buff, a custom soundtrack is your own secret weapon when it comes to running. Whether your poison is Raekwon or Rachmaninoff, science knows: music makes you run faster and for longer.

A 2015 study in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research found that “music was able to activate the pre-frontal cortex area, minimize perceptions, improve performance and accelerate recovery during 5 km of running.”

Runners averaged 27:33 when running in silence; 26:00 when listening to slow motivational music; and 26:06 when listening to music with a fast beat. They all got out of the gates faster with music playing, with the first 800 meters particularly impacted.

As Dr. Costas Karageorghis of Brunel University in London, a leading expert on the psychology of exercise music, has written, music can be thought of as an “a type of legal performance-enhancing drug.” However good your playlist though, it’s only as good as the headphones you play it through. Tiny sounding and poorly fitted headphones can impact your performance as badly as the wrong running shoes.

At Plantronics, we think we’ve nailed it with Plantronics BackBeat FIT and our BackBeat FIT 300 Series and BackBeat FIT 500 Series. Plantronics BackBeat FIT is specifically designed for a high-motion outdoor workout, such as running, while BackBeat FIT 300 and 500 are more indoor gym companions. Sweat-proof and with a battery life of up to eight hours, these are a perfect companion to your training, whether you’re braving the elements digging in for that ultra-marathon or lifting and working your core at the gym.

They’re all very comfortable, completely wireless and lightweight and durable owing to their nano-coat. The added functionality of easy to access on-ear controls means no more interruptions to dig out your phone when that playlist goes awry.

The most beautiful beach run in the world

Published: 29 September 2014

Season of beautiful beach runs kicks off on Cape West Coast

CleanC the NPO behind the Cape Town Beach Clean Up held its first Beautiful Beach Run on Sunday 28th September at Silwerstroomstrand,  40km North of Cape Town on the West Coast.

In near perfect conditions, on a stunning spring day100 avid trail runners and outdoor lovers joined CleanC to run the 2.5km, 5km and 12km routes along the spectacular west coast coastline in a race that was literally  one of the most beautiful in the world.  An excellent turnout saw experienced athletes join less experienced athletes and families enjoy a fun day. “For good reason, we named the run “The most beautiful beach run in the world”” says Greg Player, founder of CleanC and the Cape Town Beach Clean Up “Not only is the scenery naturally outstanding, but it ties in with our Beautiful Future projects that include our Run to Lead campaign”

Run to Lead is a CleanC initiative requiring 21 runners to sponsor a group young development runners to complete the 2 Oceans Half Marathon in 2015. It is one of the Clean C/Cape Town Beach cleanups Mandela Year projects it serves to be a community building and upliftment project using running as a way to connect and build relationships  with someone by going on runs together and enjoying the outdoors together. “The initiative gives people the opportunity to do something they would normally never have had the opportunity to do and make a difference to themselves, their community and their country.” explains Player.

The race raised R3000 for CleanC and was the first of a season of Trail and Beach Runs the organization has planned. “Not only do we wish to create fun fundraising events” continues Player “but we also want to showcase the outstanding beaches around Cape Town in a unique way, playing our part in sustaining and promoting tourism”

The 12km race was won by Siviwe Komani, a young runner from Joe Slovo Park on the Run to Lead project who beat vastly more experienced runners in the field with an excellent time of 1hr 2minutes for 12km. “I feel good running” said Komani “I am really grateful to be on the Run to Lead project”, the smile on his face and the 5 other young runners from Joe Slovo Park summed up the event.

The Silwerstroomstrand event will take place again in late September 2015 with 500 entries being made available; a number of other trail and beach runs, including some in townships will be open for entry on www.cleanc.co.za in mid-November.

Talisman Hire wish sani2c riders good luck!

Published: 14 May 2014

The official bike-wash sponsor to the Nedbank sani2c, Talisman Hire, wishes riders competing in the 10th edition of the sani2c, which began yesterday (May 13) and ends on May 17, all the best of luck as they take on the world’s biggest full-service mountain bike stage race.

Transporting a massive mobile bike wash centre throughout the stages and then washing approximately 4 500, mud-caked and dusty bikes that have traversed through KwaZulu-Natal’s most unpredictable terrain, with rural stage finishes mostly in the middle of nowhere, is no easy feat.

Talisman Hire’s eco-friendly, bike-cleaning system enables them to master this epic task at the end of every stage of the 265km sani2c race, which began in Underberg and ends in Scottburgh on the KZN south coast.

At the end of each stage day, riders take their bikes to Talisman’s cleaning station, signposted with a giant inflatable Talisman so riders know where to go, and raised above ground on a platform built specifically for this race in order to efficiently drain off water. Here bikes pass through a rigorous process that sees them cleaned by masterful bike washers using top of the range, high pressure cleaners, powered by Talisman-supplied generators.

Using as little water as possible, Talisman’s washing system and expertly-trained staff ensure bikes come out the other side sparkling and without damage, especially to the bearings, which can be affected during high-power washing. Once washed and dried, all bikes are expertly ‘lubed’ ready for the next day.

Staying true to the ethos of the Nedbank sani2c, which is to create a race that gives back to, and empowers, the local community, Talisman sources staff locally thus helping to create employment in the rural areas that the race passes through.

Says Colin Du Plessis, Managing Director at Talisman Hire, “We first came on board the Nedbank sani2c adventure in 2013 when we provided a much-improved bike washing system. We are once again immensely proud to be the official bike-washer at the 2014 Nedbank sani2c as it celebrates 10 years of allowing riders the opportunity to journey through KZN’s most stunning scenery. Our highly-efficient bike washing station equipped with industry-best equipment ensures a streamlined and hassle-free process for riders competing in the race. Good luck riders!”
