Cyril Ramaphosa Education Trust encourages the habit of giving back

Published: 12 July 2018

“On the eve of what would have been Nelson Mandela’s centenary, we encourage all South Africans to take the spirit of giving back beyond 67 Minutes and into their everyday lives,” says Donné Nicol, Chief Executive Officer at the Cyril Ramaphosa Foundation. “For the past 22 years our partner entity, the Cyril Ramaphosa Education Trust (CRET), has instilled the belief that every individual has the ability and potential to make a positive impact,” continues Nicol.

CRET,  a bursary fund started by President Cyril Ramaphosa that was originally funded by money he earned at public speaking events, goes further than supplying financial support to its students by instilling values of civic mindedness and community service as well. This holistic approach produces young people committed to making South Africa a better place.

“The programme, which has assisted 132 students to date, has seen many of its beneficiaries go on to do inspiring community development work in South Africa. The CRET alumni have also taken it upon themselves to start the ‘Alumni Fund’, which has already funded the studies of two more promising students,” says Chantel Oosthuizen, Executive Director of CRET.

Twice a year, CRET students and a number of alumni and staff, take part in the organisation’s ‘Vacation Programme’, that spans three days and helps students to build and foster relationships. One day of the programmes is dedicated to community service, where students and alumni carry out the organisation’s ethos of compassion.

Last month, 60 CRET students and several alumni and staff, cooked, cleaned and volunteered their time at the Abangeni Enkosini Orphanage in Alexandra as part of the programme. “I am grateful to the CRET family for promoting a culture of giving back through their many interventions. I will hold this experience dear to my heart and continue to give back in the same way they have given so generously to me,” says Letlhogonolo Masilo, a 4th year BA Governance and Political Transformation Studies student at University of the Free State.

“It is through first-hand experience of platforms such as this and others like CRET’s ‘Cell C Take a Girl Child to Work Day’, ‘Tracker Men in the Making Day’ and many more, that beneficiaries are inspired to carry on the commitment to giving back into their everyday lives. Since the organisation’s inception, we have inspired students and alumni to start and lead bridging institutions, volunteer programmes, fundraising and charity organisations,” says Oosthuizen.

“Although we have a great focus on and respect for education, it is going to take more than academics to create a better future for South Africa. Our country needs a group of leaders that are hardworking, passionate and kind; which is what we hope to achieve by instilling this philosophy into all of our students,” Oosthuizen concludes.

Nectar UC Diagnostics Works with Plantronics Manager Pro SaaS Offering to Improve UC Experience

Published: 12 July 2018

Available in South Africa through local authorized distributors, Plantronics Manager Pro provides enterprises total control and flexibility over their Plantronics audio headsets and devices. Plantronics Manager Pro is a web-based service that gives IT Managers easy-to-use tools to configure settings and update audio device software and firmware for end-users across the enterprise. Last month, Wendy Dawson, Senior Development Marketing Manager for Plantronics, blogged about a professional partnership which represents a collaborative viewpoint of the value of adopting Software-as-a Service (SaaS) solutions such as Manager Pro.

"Today, I’m happy to let you know that Plantronics and Nectar are introducing the industry’s first ear-to-ear (e2e) unified communications (UC) diagnostics solution, extending call visibility past the desktop. Nectar UC Diagnostics troubleshoots network issues contributing to poor UC experiences and along with the actionable insights from Plantronics Manager Pro software-as-a-service (SaaS), can be used to improve your customers’ UC experience.

Nectar and Plantronics are bringing two stellar communications solutions together to provide diagnostics showing call-specific health statistics for wireless headsets. Until now, the last three feet of the UC network has been out of reach to the enterprise IT team. This new solution goes beyond traditional UC diagnostic solutions that end at the desktop and now gives IT the ability to see network health all the way to the end user’s Bluetooth headset.

Using this solution, enterprises and UC service providers can diagnose issues faster than in the past and they can track and make decisions from these actionable insights over time. This means call quality issues—no matter what is causing them—won’t ever get in the way of the ability to deliver superior customer service and user experience before an issue is ever detected.

Many factors can impact the quality of a UC session. The “data-your-way” philosophy built into the Plantronics Manager Pro offering extends Nectar’s capability with e2e diagnostics for Plantronics touch points providing this entirely new level of visibility into the last few feet of connectivity.

Last September, Nectar announced their agreement to develop this e2e diagnostics solution with us. Now, link quality is collected for the Plantronics Voyager UC family of headsets (excluding Voyager Legend, Voyager Edge and Voyager 104). And, it’s officially available for purchase through authorized Nectar and Plantronics authorized partners.

Nectar’s initial release of this solution will support Skype for Business on-premise deployments, with additional UC platform and cloud service support to be added over time."

SA Teens Set To Disrupt Social Media Industry

Published: 06 July 2018

Pretoria, Gauteng - 6 July 2018 -Bounz Media (Pty) Ltd is pleased to announce its brand new social media platform. The team consisting of two 19-year-olds believe they have found a way to overcome the two biggest hurdles in social media today by allowing users to literally bounce interesting posts they have received by pulling them down and then having them sent onwards to all their followers. This process can continue indefinitely and allow the posts of people with a limited following to theoretically reach everyone on the platform.

The ability for posts to be shared is not a new concept but Bounz places emphasis on this and “gamifies” the experience through a fun, interactive bouncing motion which incentivises sharing. Furthermore Bounz has been designed for the sharing of creative graphical posts to strangers and for that purpose only. What this means is that everything on Bounz is public and should be posted with that intention. This is significant because it solves the privacy issues that current platforms are battling with by providing no privacy and making that clear to users.

Ishe Mabugu realised that most people are very creative and should not be limited to only being able to share posts with people that happen to follow them. Ishe had a brilliant idea to solve this problem with an app that allows posts to be bounced. Unfortunately Ishe is not a software developer and had to find a partner who could bring his idea to life. Ishe managed to get in contact with local coding prodigy, Gerhard de Clercq and the two have been working tirelessly for the past year to make Bounz a reality.

Gerhard has pulled off a miracle to single-handedly craft a working prototype and work on completing an engineering degree (for which he is still currently top of his class) but simply cannot find the time necessary to bring the app up to public release standards.

The team realised that they needed to find funding in order to complete their app but could not manage much success with regards to venture capital. As such, they are now looking to crowd funding in order to get their app completed. The belief here is that fans of the app should me more than willing to support it.

Their campaign is now live on Indiegogo at https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/bounz-the-app-that-sets-your-posts-free-apps-iphoneand includes an interesting YouTube video showcasing their prototype and explaining how the app works. They hope that the public will support them in their mission and wish to reiterate that any contribution, no matter how small, will make a big difference.

Africa’s CX Summit Tackles Return on Investment

Published: 06 July 2018

The 2018 edition of CEM Africa will focus on return on investment as the African CX market matures and investment increases.

Kinetic, the organizers of Customer Experience Management Africa, the largest gathering of CX professionals on the African continent, has announced that the primary focus for the 2018 event will be Return on Investment. The summit, held in Cape Town on the 1st and 2nd of August at the Cape Town International Convention Centre will once again see top level delegates in the marketing and CX profession meet to showcase and discuss best practice as well the latest in innovative technology. The event purpose is geared towards the objective of supplying their African customers with a world class customer experience.

Juan Mouton, Portfolio Director for the summit noted the following “The African retail, tourism and financial markets have taken huge leaps forward in customer experience over the last 6 years and as the market matures and investment in CX continues to grow, being able to show a quantifiable return on investment that is linked to business metrics is becoming a critical requirement.” He goes on to mention “Technology plays a huge role in being able to leverage actionable insights on the enormous amounts of data that is collected along the customer journey. The major stumbling point for most organizations is understanding how to extract value from that data, and redeploy those insights to inspire an emotional connection with the consumer that leads to real business results that reflect on the bottom line.” “That is what this year’s summit will aim to tackle and together with industry leaders and our partners we are sure that everyone attending the summit will leave with the ability to create a business led customer experience strategy.”

The 2018 CEM Africa Summit will once again partner with the Customer Experience Professionals Association (CXPA), the global professional body overseeing the CX profession. CXPA CEO, Diane Magers will open this years’ conference and host a series of workshops at the event. Commenting on the theme of the conference and the importance of being able to extract value from data Diane said “It is definitely a challenging competency for organizations in general. But, CX professionals are in the unique position to bring together the data and understand the right problem to solve using design thinking and insight generation techniques.  It is teaching the organization what the data means and, not only what they can do with it (with a CX professionals guidance) but also why it is important to leverage the information. It’s incumbent on CX practitioners, analysts and business units to work closely to discover the right opportunities from across the enterprise based on the customer’s journey and present a credible and cohesive picture of insights, the holistic solution approach and the results.”

The CEM Africa Summit, which is regarded as a world class CX event that competes on a global scale will feature industry leaders from organizations such as AIG Insurance, Old Mutual, ABSA, Travel Start, Uber, Multichoice, Oracle and many more. The platform for sharing best practice in key note presentations and the open debate on key challenges in the panel discussions provide a diverse and rich source of information.

Where the summit truly sets itself apart is in the workshop sessions. With more than 40 workshops that are graded from beginner to advanced, CX practitioners across all levels of maturity are able to gain detailed insight and practical advice around technology, research and case study material from organizations that are leading the way within the customer experience industry.

The graded workshop structure and the focus on business led customer experience has seen registrations for the event explode with almost 70% of the seats already reserved. The final round of allocations will go on sale on this week and organizations are encouraged to book quickly to avoid the disappointment of missing out.

Simply Brings Affordable Life Cover to SA’s One Million Domestic Workers

Published: 27 June 2018

According to Stats SA’s latest Quarterly Labour Force Survey, more than 6% of working South Africans are employed as Domestic Workers*, and more people are employed in private households than in the mining and agriculture sectors combined. If dependents of these workers are included, then as many as four to five million people are supported by this industry.

However, up until recently there haven’t been many options for the average South African domestic worker to access simple, good value life insurance. There are a number of insurance companies targeting low income customers, but the products are often limited to funeral cover only. Given the financial challenges many domestic workers face, they also often struggle to keep up with payments, so in many cases their cover lapses and isn’t in place when it’s needed.

Insurtech player Simply Financial Services (Simply) has introduced a new life insurance bundle called Domestic Cover which is aimed specifically at employers of domestic employees.  The product, which comprises life, disability and funeral cover, is affordable, easy to understand and strong on accessibility. Its also completely flexible, with the customer able to customise the bundle to suit their needs and budget. The policies are underwritten by Old Mutual Alternative Risk Transfer Limited, an insurer in the Old Mutual group – so customers can be safe in the knowledge that valid claims will be honoured.

“Simply’s aim is to provide easy-to-understand, affordable and accessible life insurance for the mass market in South Africa, and thereby contribute to a significant new level of financial security to people in this segment,” said Anthony Miller, CEO of Simply Financial Services.

“Life tends to be risky and uncertain for domestic workers and their families.  When a breadwinner becomes disabled and possibly even dies, the families are left without significant savings and with large funeral bills to pay.

“If you add societal risks such as taxi accidents and random violence for the workers who often travel large distances to and from work, the level of risk facing this sector becomes apparent,” Miller said.

“The bottom line is that the worker’s dependents are very often consigned to poverty in the event of death or disability,” he said. “Their employers may feel obliged to provide financial assistance in these situations”.

By using technology and an innovative operating model, Simply products are able to deliver great value. For example, a 30-year-old woman earning R4 500 a month gets R100 000 life cover, R150 000 disability cover and R15 000 family funeral cover (which covers the insured person, the spouse and up to five children) for R92 per month.

And by putting the responsibility for paying the premium on the employer, the risk of cover being cancelled due to lack of payment is greatly reduced, meaning the cover will be there when needed. If the domestic worker moves on, they can choose to take over the payment of the premium on the same terms, or they can ask their new employer to take over the policy.

As an alternative Simply also offers a Family Cover product with similar benefits and costs, but where instead the employee takes out the cover and is responsible for paying the premium themselves.

Signing up is simple. The entire online process takes less than ten minutes and requires the individual to fill in some personal details and answer three health-related questions.  Should they qualify, cover is immediate.

For the employers of domestic workers in South Africa, this represents a great opportunity to provide a valuable safety net for their staff, many of whom have been loyal employees for decades, without adding significantly to their costs.

Badplaas, A Forever Resort boasts with new Hydro and Spa

Published: 11 June 2018

Badplaas, a well-known treasure within the Forever Resorts South Africa portfolio has recently spent millions on the upgrade of their Hydro and Spa facility. This upgrade has been on the books for the past two years and upgrades begun in October 2017 with the official construction commencing in January 2018. On the 26th of March the Coffee Shop which also underwent a total renovation along with the Hydro re-opened. The Spa re-opened two days later, on the 31st of March 2018. The official exclusive launch of the Hydro and Spa took place yesterday, 7 June 2018 and was attended by elite guests and VIPs including Honourable MEC Eric Kholwane and Executive Mayor Councillor Nkosi of Chief Albert Luthuli Municipality.

Sandra Rath from the South African Association of Health and Skincare Professionals (SAAHSP) and from SDV Pharmaceuticals who attended the exquisite launch of the Badplaas Hydro and Spa said that the Spa industry in South Africa is still showing growth regardless of the Economic climate. “Being in the industry for the past 30 years, I can only say that the standard of this Spa exceeds expectations in all aspects. From ambiance to style, staff to treatments, this Spa is a must experience”, Rath added.

The new buzz word, “Hydro”Hydro’s are often confused with Jet Baths and Jacuzzis. The reason for this is two common  elements, water and pulsing jets. A Hydro is however a treatment rather than an experience, an underwater massage which stimulates your body’s blood circulation. Over and above that, the water is warm therefore it opens pores cleaning your skin leaving you feeling refreshed. The Hydro assists with the treatment of stiff, sore muscles and joints by focusing on typical problem areas such as your neck, back, legs and limbs. It is for this reason that Hydro treatments are often recommended with products and treatments maximising the benefits.

What makes the Badplaas Hydro and Spa unique? There are only a few resorts in South Africa that can boast with natural warm water springs – Badplaas is one of those select few. The spring water is filled with a variety of 32 natural minerals. This water is them pumped into the Hydro pools, from the Hydro pools the water is pumped into the heated pool outside, from there the water is distributed to the other pools on the property cooling down as it travels from one pool to the other. The spring water is also used in the spa for various water based treatments offered at Badplaas.

The Spa has Specialist Therapists who take care of the needs of customers individually in tranquil and beautiful surroundings. The relaxation area consists of a 12 seat sauna and relaxation pool with spring water. The Spa offers a range of Facial and Specialised Facial Treatments, Brow and Lash Treatments, Massage Therapy, Specialised Body Treatments, Hand and Foot Therapy, Nail Treatments, Waxing and even kiddies treatments including Facials, Massages, Manicures and Pedicures.

The origin of the springsHot springs in South Africa originates from seepage-water that joins a subterranean water system, the more the water sinks the warmer the mineral water gets. If the mineral water moves fast enough it can still be hot when it moves back to the earth’s surface.  Mineral water contains a large amount of trace elements such as sodium, chloride and fluoride; however the mineral water’s chemical compound will differ from one source to the next. The spring water mainly consists of surface water (rain and snow) seeping through layers of rock which contain the minerals, as the water moves between these rocks its trace elements are dissolved by the water before it moves back to the surface of the earth.

The spring water at Badplaas rises from approximately 4300 metres below the earth’s surface. The spring itself has a capacity of 34 000 litres of mineral water per hour and a water temperature of 53˚C. A rift valley from Badplaas to the Swaziland Spa in Mbabane has formed in the earth’s crust causing hot bubbles at various places in this valley’s trail.

Even Small Meeting Rooms Deserve Large-Scale Performance

Published: 24 May 2018

The mobile workforce is growing at a rapid rate, and its workers need technology that enable them to be more efficient at collaborating and communicating. Gavin Sear, Manager Global Product Marketing at Plantronics talks about the new Calisto 7200 in his recent blog:

"Today I have the pleasure of letting you all know that Plantronics has added to the Calisto family of speakerphones by introducing Calisto 7200 to the market. This new, sleek and compact speakerphone is designed specifically for small “huddle rooms” for up to six people, to provide a meeting experience beyond compare. With the addition of Calisto 7200, our partners can now offer their customers a complete selection of audio collaboration devices: headsets, personal and small group speakerphones.

We created this product in a collaboration that began last year with Polycom, a leader in the conferencing space, as we share a mutual goal of providing users with superior user experiences. There’s no doubt the need for small conference rooms is growing quickly. A Nemertes 2018 study found 67 percent of IT leaders are evaluating now, or planning this year or next year, to invest in meeting rooms. Even in today’s open-office environments, the need for smaller conference and collaboration rooms is increasing.

Calisto 7200 offers a professional audio experience on both ends of the call, powered by Polycom. Four highly-directional microphones pick up speech from every corner of the meeting room, with a great reduction of the “cave effect” of room reverberance. In addition, Calisto 7200 comes with wide band support for natural-sounding meetings with a small group of people. Noise cancelling technology filters out undesirable background noises like keyboard typing and paper shuffling when nobody in the room is actively speaking.

One of the best things about this speakerphone is that it can help increase adoption of unified communications (UC) systems. Because it’s so easy to use, with intuitive, plug-and-play connectivity for both PCs and mobile phones, it’s just flat-out simple to connect with UC applications. An additional side benefit is that businesses placing these in their huddle rooms don’t need to worry about post-installation availability. Calisto 7200 comes with a combined USB audio and security cable. However, without the locking cable, the device is portable, so you can take it on the road with you if you wish. To top it all off, there is software support for asset management via our Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) offering, Plantronics Manager Pro. With the subscription of Plantronics Manager Pro, IT can track these (and other) Plantronics audio and mobile devices to control inventory, update firmware, pre-configure and lock device settings remotely to ensure consistent audio across all devices.

Calisto 7200 connects easily via a USB cable, or you can connect wirelessly via Bluetooth. It has touch-sensitive controls to make it easy to manage calls and the Bluetooth memory can be cleared of previously paired devices which is essential for a shared audio device. And it’s affordable enough to install in all of your huddle rooms, small conference rooms and collaboration zones."

Designed for exceptional conferencing performance in a small group conference room, watch this page https://www.plantronics.com/za/en for more information about future availability in South Africa or speak to one of our local South African distributors.

South Africa participates in largest crowdsourced Global Giving survey to empower NPOs

Published: 23 May 2018

With over 150 000 charity organizations in South Africa, it is clear to see why we are known as a warm-hearted nation. With so many non-profits doing their part to elevate their various causes, it is the perfect time to dig deeper and investigate our unique stance on philanthropy.

A new survey, put together by Non-profit Tech For Good is hoping to provide insight into our budding non-profit sector through the 2018 Global Trends in Giving Survey. A report which will be the first of its kind.

The survey, available in five languages; Arabic, English, French, Portuguese and Spanish, aims to crowdsource the largest global survey of individual donors ever, partnering with 21 Non-profit organizations to better understand generosity in the charity space.

Representing South Africa in the study, which is already in circulation, is donations based crowdfunding platform, BackaBuddy, a strong contender in social giving. The organization has raised an astounding R65 Million for charities and individuals alike.

“The goal of the 2018 Global Trends in Giving Survey is to gain a better understanding of how donors worldwide engage with causes and charities that resonate with them. Partnering with BackaBuddy we hope to gage an understanding of the ‘spirit of Ubuntu’ in the emerging market that is South Africa” – says Non-profit Technology Trainer, Heather MacDonald

We would like to encourage South Africans to join the conversation and lend their voice to the report. The results will allow our charities an opportunity to learn from each other and align themselves with latest the market trends to better serve our community.

The survey is 100% anonymous and only takes 5 minutes to complete. Click here: https://givingreport.ngo
