Bar Di Bar crowd funding drive

Published: 18 April 2017

BAR DI BAR, SECOND WIND

Bar Di Bar, the original mobile craft beer truck is now on Jumpstarter Crowdfunding. The fairytale that started with the 1975 VW Kombi bar conversion has come to a crosrsoads, with no happy ending in sight. We lost our home and our brewery and have come to the people via Jumpstarter Crowdfunding to see if they can brew some magic. Let’s start at the beginning.

If you Google “Hipster”, you’ll find several descriptions, but the one that rings most true is from Urban Dictionary. It categorizes Hipsters as  “A subculture of men and women typically in their 20's and 30's who value independent thinking, counter-culture, progressive politics, an appreciation of art and indie-rock, creativity, intelligence, and witty banter.”

So one night, after sampling several of South Africa’s finest craft beers and talking about progressive politics, indie-rock, creativity blah di blah….the idea of a “hipster mobile” was born. What if we take something old, make it look new and add something cool? One beer led to another and Bar Di Bar became a reality.

Fast forward 2,5 years and we managed to successfully open a Craft Beer and Tapas Bar, contracted our very own American Pale Ale (APA) and were 80% completed and on our way to opening our brewery. The universe had other plans and on the 22nd December 2016, disaster struck. The liquor license got declined, the farm we were on changed hands and we were handed notice. Blood sweat and tears and lots of our hard earned savings went into the project and now we are left with nothing.

“I saw one of my favourite local bands, f@k#fpolisiekar, using crowd funding very successfully for the launch of their first independent album in 11 years and thought let’s give it a go.” Says owner Conrad Harley. “We have big plans. The brand is solid and really interesting and with a little help, things could snowball and we could see more than one Bar Di Bar in South Africa.” He continues. We have staggered the fundraising process to buy kegs, which then allows us to contract brew and distribute to trade.

We would then continue to target key events in Johannesburg and launch our APA up north. It’s not all about giving as we also created a fun and engaging reward structure for those willing to assist with level three donors receiving a “don’t worry, be hoppy” shirt for every R200 donated. The ultimate goal is to have our own brewery, so although we are not using this platform to raise funds for the brewery, it could just provide the impetus necessary to get there.

Breatheasy with Econorisk: A fundraising concert with Watershed

Published: 09 November 2016

Econorisk and Watershed have teamed up once again, this time to raise money for the Breatheasy Tracheostomy and Ventilation Homecare Programme and the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital.

On 24 November at 19h00 South African music sensation, Watershed, will take to the stage at the Rockwell Hotel theatre to perform for this life-changing charitable initiative made possible by Econorisk, a leading short-term insurance brokerage.

Developed by Sister Jane Booth, the Breatheasy Programme provides parents of children reliant on tracheostomy or artificial ventilation for breathing, with the tools and skills needed to enable their children to enjoy life at home, surrounded by their families, rather than in hospital.

Steven Hall, who brought the Breatheasy Programme to the attention of Brett Schultz, Director at Econorisk, explains how the event came about: "As a way of saying thank you for the care my mother received in hospital before she passed away, I wanted to find a cause which I could support - paying it forward, by raising awareness for an organisation helping the community and those in need. That is when I came across the Breatheasy Programme for children in South Africa whose lives are affected by breathing complications.

"I decided to take part in half and full ironman events to create an even greater awareness of the Breatheasy Programme and their challenges and to raise funding for them. When I approached Brett he was immediately on board.  He shares a passion for sport, and wanting to make a difference for those in need. Econorisk sponsored my entry fees for the 70.3 season, but Brett also wanted to get other companies involved. His vision was to create an event in which we could platform the Breatheasy Programme to create more awareness, as well as establish additional fundraising opportunities. That is how the concert with Watershed came about."

Not only is the Breatheasy Programme supporting the community and changing lives, but it is also a good fit with Econorisk’s brand values, as Brett explains:

“At Econorisk, we pride ourselves on providing holistic insurance solutions to clients, giving them peace of mind and the reassurance that they are covered in case of any unwelcome future events ... thereby helping them breathe a little easier. I therefore knew immediately that the Breatheasy Programme was the right initiative for Econorisk to back.

“I have known Craig Hinds for many years and, having worked with Watershed on a previous Econorisk fundraiser event in 2014 in support of up and coming South African Paralympic hopeful, Nicole Sanders, I approached him with the idea of another concert, which he wholeheartedly supported. And so the planning began.”

The Breatheasy with Econorisk fundraiser concert with Watershed takes place on 24 November 2016 at 18.30 for 19h00 at the Rockwell Hotel theatre in Greenpoint, Cape Town. Proceeds raised will be used to purchase vital medical equipment such as ventilators, suction machines and humidifiers for the Programme that has been caring for children with a wide range of respiratory disorders for over two decades.

“I believe that many South Africans have the desire to make a positive difference in others lives, but don’t always know how to,” says Steven. “Through this platform, we are giving people the opportunity to make this difference – and to have a good time whilst doing so.”

Brett concludes: “Whilst it may come naturally to many of us, for some the simple act of breathing is sadly difficult or even impossible. Econorisk is incredibly proud to support the Breatheasy Programme and we invite companies and individuals to enjoy the sounds of Watershed for this life-changing cause.”

BIC educational roadshow continues with its ‘Legacy of Learning’

Published: 20 October 2016

For the fifth consecutive year, BIC® is currently visiting schools across Gauteng on its educational roadshow. This year, the stationery brand continues its efforts towards improving the quality of education in our schools with the message: ‘If You Can Dream It, You Can Be It’. The aim is to motivate pupils to strive for greatness regardless of their circumstances.

The activation, presented by the brand character ‘BIC Boy’ and a team of brand activators from Zinto Marketing Group who have partnered with BIC since the outset of these national educational roadshows, imparts key educational messages ‒ emphasising the importance of making good career choices and planning for the future from a young age. The format engages learners to interact with the brand which encourages pupils to strive towards creating and leaving their own legacy.

BIC® has also launched a colouring-in competition being run concurrently with the roadshow, which inspires learners to get creative. It brings excitement to schools and awards cash prizes to the winners as well as the teachers and schools with the most entries. The winning school will select an under-resourced school of their choosing as the recipient of a cash donation. In addition, BIC will refurbish one other school in need of maintenance and repair.

Launched in 2011, the ‘Buy a pen. Donate a pen’ initiative has donated over five million pens that assist under-privileged learners across South Africa by contributing a pen for every one purchased. The aim to ensure that our future learners are able to change opinions through education with the notion: ‘The Pen is Mightier than the Sword’.

Canoe King, McGregor, continues his world domination in Mauritius

Published: 05 July 2016

5 JULY 2016, DURBAN, SOUTH AFRICA – Canoe king, Hank McGregor (Jeep Team), continued his world-class reign of legendary back-to-back victories to claim his fourth Investec Mauritius Ocean Classic title on Saturday, 2 July 2016. The 26km event, which took place near Black River, Mauritius, also doubled as Round 1 of the 2016 ICF Ocean Racing World Cup, which is a new, three-part series on the world surfski calendar. Paddlers faced rough 25-knot downwind conditions at Saturday’s race, with McGregor commenting that “conditions were pretty wild out there, it was super cool! There were some wide-eyed paddlers.” It was a close race against McGregor (Jeep Team), with Australia’s Cory Hill and Michael Booth, and South Africa’s Jasper Mocké and Barry Lewin (Jeep Team), all battling it out for the title until the final two kilometres where McGregor edged ahead to claim the win in 1h08. Hill finished 2nd in 1h09, followed by Booth in 3rd (1h10), Mocké 4th (1h11m30) and Lewin 5th (1h11m57).

Said McGregor, “The final 2km saw us head into the notorious Le Morne Pass, where it’s a hard slog against strong headwinds to the end. I was able to get the lead going into this point, managing to keep it at three hundred metres all the way to the finish. I’m stoked with my fourth win here in a top-class field. The Mauritius Ocean Classic is one of my favourite surfski events as it is a very family-orientated race. This year, my wife Pippa and son Thorsten were here with me, and it was awesome to have their support!” Said Lewin, “I’m stoked with my 5th place finish in Mauritius. Love racing the top guys in the world, and the challenge of a wild ocean. Can't wait for next year.” Round 2 of the ICF Ocean Racing World Cup, the Nelo Summer Challenge, takes place in Portugal this weekend, 8 - 10 July 2016. The third and final event is happening in Tahiti in September 2016. It’s turning into another remarkable year for canoe king McGregor as he proves an unbeatable force in world surfski. At the end of May, he conquered the world’s toughest surfski ultra marathon, the 53km Maui Jim Molokai Surfski Challenge in Hawaii, for a third time. Just a few days later, he won the world’s oldest surfski event, the Illovo Pirates Umhlanga Pirates Surfski Race, in Durban. Then on 29 June, McGregor claimed victory at the FNB Durban Downwind, which is a 2016 World Surfski Series title event. In-between these surfski races, he also won the K1 title at the 2016 South African Canoe Marathon Championships in Cape Town, a result which has qualified him for the 2016 ICF Canoe Marathon World Championships taking place in Germany later this year.

2016 INVESTEC MAURITIUS OCEAN CLASSIC RESULTS:

  1. Hank McGregor (SA) - 1:08:46
  2. Cory Hill (AUS) - 1:09:43
  3. Michael Booth (AUS) - 1:10:18
  4. Jasper Mocké (SA) - 1:11:30
  5. Barry Lewin (SA) - 1:11:57

Other Jeep Team Results: BMX Jeep Team’s 16-year-old BMX athlete, Alex Dolman, took on riders much older than himself this weekend, as he competed in the Elite category at Rounds 4, 5 and 6 of the 2016 SA BMX National Age Group Series, which took place at the Rhino and Lion Reserve in Gauteng. Dolman managed to place 8th overall. OCR On Saturday, Jeep Team’s OCR champion, Thomas van Tonder, completed the Wolf Pack Challenge, an extreme, but fun, trail running event in Gauteng where there are no winners or losers. Started by Herman Mulder, the event has been designed for trail runners looking for a hard-core, no frills, back-to-basics physical challenge. The challenge comprised of five ascents of the Magaliesburg to the beacon above the Hartbeespoort Aerial Cableway. This equalled 1600m ascent over 21km.

ATKV holiday shenanigans takeover Groot Ontbyt

Published: 17 May 2016

The Koekemoers on the Telly

The Koekemoers, a brand new miniseries from the ATKV which will be broadcasting on Wednesday mornings at 07:00 (staring on the 18th of May 2016) on the popular Die Groot Ontbyt on Kyknet, will have households ready to burst into laughter within three minutes before they hit the road to work.

Family holiday shenanigans will be depicted with this tongue-in-cheek show which many viewers will be able to identify with."We would like to offer the Afrikaans viewer and our holiday goers content that will draw attention to typical family holiday events that most of us may have experienced. Some of the scenes are slightly dramatized, but the "tongue-in-cheek tone" will ensure a bit of healthy early morning humour. Think of the then short stories in the mornings just before everyone left for work like Het Jou Katvis! "Said Reinard du Plessis, General Marketing and Communications Manager at ATKV Business.

Although the show is produced to entertain viewers, this production was a far cry from being a joke. The miniseries was carefully planned to ensure that a strong storyline developed with each episode. Each episode is only three minutes long and broadcast spans across 12 weeks - which is an indication of the sharp and explosive humour of the show.

The main role and father, Johan Koekemoer is played by the well-known Afrikaans singer Joe F. The rest of the family includes the mother and anchor of the family, Marguerite Koekemoer (played by Lizé van der Walt), Megan "Viper" Koekemoer - the difficult teenage daughter (played by Danielle Du Plessis) and Johan Junior Koekemoer (played by TJ Day) - the apathetic boy who cannot stop playing with his electronic gadgets.

But the series is not built merely to provide viewers with a weekly shot healthy humour. There are also valuable holiday suggestions and tips each week on the ATKV resort's Facebook page (www.facebook.com/ATKVOORDE) that link onto that week's episode. Viewers should also be on the lookout for attractive prizes from May to August 2016 as part of the ATKV resort's Winter Promotions, because the goal is to pull each viewer into the show making it a real ATKV friendly experience, Du Plessis added.

The #CloverLBCO AFP (advertiser-funded program), which was produced by Quizzical, South Africa’s leading film and television production house, was up against Cula Sibone, Nguwe, and Clover’s own Tropika Island of Treasure in this category. The 2015 awards, which was themed “Coming of Age”, enthralled celebrities, entertainment industry leaders and prominent officials in two star-studded evenings held at Gallagher Estate. Zama Mkosi, SAFTA’s chairperson said that the talent for SAFTA’s 2015 were very high.

“As a unique cooking challenge where children and their parents compete against other food-mad families on national television, the accolade goes a long way to boosting the interest in Season 2 of the show, which airs from the 28th June 2015,” says King.

Again teams will out-cook and out-whisk each other over thirteen weeks of baking, frying and spatula-waving action in a bid to become the champions and win fantastic prizes (including a family trip to Disney World and a kitchen makeover), countrywide acclaim and see their recipes published in another Clover Little Big Cook Off Recipe Book.
