Six of Cape Town’s most charming teens proved their magical prowess and took home gold at the 2021 Western Cape Junior Magician Championships on Saturday 18 September 2021.

The Championships, hosted annually by the College of Magic, the Mother City’s only magical arts organisation, was presented in a new hybrid virtual and live event format at the College’s mysterious Victorian manor in Claremont and online via the Quicket platform. 

Eleven of the province’s teens went wand to wand at the Championships, with judges grading them on the visual impact and presentation of their acts, their technical and magical abilities and showmanship skills. In the end, six of these outstanding teens won top honours.

Somerset West’s Sebastien van den Hoogen (17) charmed his way into winning the Stage Magic Champion trophy with a graceful performance featuring elegant dove and silk  production effects. With an impressive bag of tricks up his sleeve,Sebastien also clinched the Close-Up Magic runner-up title. 

The teen is ecstatic about his double achievement:

“I’m over-the-moon excited! I practiced for months leading up to the competition and I am just so thrilled that all of my hard work paid off. I hope winning this title will open more doors for me in the world of magic and I am so keen on developing new acts.”

Century City’s Sahil Samlal (18) successfully defended his Close-Up Magician title for the second year running. 

In a surprise magical twist, the runner-up Stage Magic Champion title was awarded to both Lilitha Frans (17) from Phillipi and Tristan Grant (18) from Diep River.

Lilitha, a grade 11 learner with aspirations of becoming an actor someday, is quite vocal about the benefits of studying magic and competing:

“Studying magic at the College of Magic has been life-changing for me and to be able to take what I’ve learnt there and perform it in an award-winning act has been a dream come true. Winning this award  has inspired me to enter more magic competitions and I cannot wait to show everyone what I’ve got!”

Future engineer Tristan is happy that the judges and audience enjoyed his winning act:

“I have started to see magic not just as a sequence of moves, but rather a way to tell a story, and a way to make people have fun.It gives me great joy to know that the Champs spectators were blown away by my story!”

Tying for the Supreme Up-and-Coming Junior Magician Trophy are Deyna Viret (17) from Yzerfontein and Riyago Maartens (17) from Durbanville .The Supreme Trophy is awarded to a performer for their successful performance skills and great potential.

As one of only three female competitors at the Champs this year, Deyna is thrilled to be awarded this wonderful accolade:

“There is no better thrill than getting the audience as excited as you are! I hope to show future female magicians that anything can be achieved if you set your heart and mind on a goal – and put in the time to practice. You only do your best when you’re having fun – and performing magic is great fun!”

Maartens,who has produced and performed in two of his own shows for the public, credits the College of Magic for his astonishing accomplishment and instilling the confidence he needed to win:

“The College of Magic has given me my passion and it was my entry into the performing arts. It has and will continue to give me an extra edge against other performers in competitions like the Championships, with the uniqueness and wonder that magic presents. My life is more wondrous and exciting with the College of Magic in it!”

Students at Cape Town’s only magical arts organisation, the College of Magic in Claremont, were treated to an enthralling lecture on the art of performing charity magic shows by Magic Tony and Hans Nordsiek of the globetrotting Magic Brothers World on Saturday 4 May 2019.

The Magic Brothers World team was visiting Cape Town as a part of their African charity performance tour, which also included shows in Egypt, Ghana and Namibia.

The Magic Brothers World visit to the College of Magic included a captivating hour-long talk with tips on establishing a career as a professional magic performer, getting credit through written and online recognition for charity performances and a short magical act with new takes on some classic magical effects, including the dazzling linking rings.

For Tony, originally from France and having left a career of teaching physics to travel the world performing magic, visiting the College and imparting his industry wisdom was a decade-long dream come true: “I discovered the College online ten years ago and had it at the top of my magic travel bucket list for so long. My visit to this incredible organisation has been an illuminating one.

I’ve been awestruck to see how the College helps its students’ dreams come true, inspires them to be great and to create something out of nothing. I look forward to visit again soon!” Hans Nordsiek, a trained Storyteller from Holland, agrees: “The College’s students and staff were very welcoming to Tony and I. To see the abundance of enthusiasm for learning the art of magic and giving back to the community has been inspiring.”

It’s been a magical year of note for young township junior magician Sesona Gagana - not only has he recently returned from representing South Africa’s magical youth on a whirlwind educational tour of Las Vegas and New York, but he was also awarded the much-coveted Siegfried and Roy Foundation Scholarship at the College of Magic’s annual graduation on Saturday 17 November 2018.

The 15-year-old teen illusionist from Khayelitsha is an ardent student of the magical arts who voraciously absorbs everything he can learn about close-up magic, stage magic, juggling and mime and clowning during his weekly lessons at the College of Magic, the only magical arts organisation of its kind in the world, in Claremont.

Each year, the College of Magic, now in its 38th year of teaching the art of magic and its allied arts as well as vital life-skills to children and adults, honours its exemplary students at two graduation ceremonies, one for the junior and one for the senior students.

As part of their annual SARMOTI Grant to the College of Magic, Siegfried and Roy present a bursary in the form of a full year’s tuition to a most deserving senior student. The Siegfried and Roy Scholarship is awarded this year to Gagana as the most deserving Course 5 student for his excellent achievements. This magical allrounder goes into his final year of training at the College of Magic in 2019.

Having met Siegfried, one half of the world-renowned illusionist duo on his recent visit to Las Vegas, Gagana is absolutely thrilled with his scholarship:

“Magic has transformed my life so much this year. Travelling overseas for the first time and meeting my magical heroes was a dream come true and now I’ve been awarded this scholarship! The College of Magic, Cape Town’s only magical arts organisation, honoured its top students at two charming graduation ceremonies held at the Rondebosch Boys High School on Saturday 17 November 2018.

More than 160 aspiring magicians were awarded their various course diplomas,signifying their successful mastering of different levels of training in magic and its allied arts, including juggling, puppetry and drama, mime and clowning.

Now in its 38th year, the College of Magic is the only organisation of its kind in the world and offers a six year on campus diploma that covers all aspects of the magic theatrical performing arts.Each year, the College of Magic, based in Claremont, honours its exemplary students at two graduation ceremonies, one for the junior and one for the senior students. The Student of the Year trophy is awarded to the best all-round junior and senior students with a record of excellent performance and participation in College life and events.

In 2018, Jessica Williamson and Duncan Shelver were awarded Junior and Senior Student of the Years awards respectively.

Williamson (13), from Plumstead, is a dedicated student of the magical arts, having competed in and placed 2nd  in the Junior Clowning Contest, 3rd in the Junior Puppetry Contest, 2nd in the Junior Stage Magic Contest and 3rd in the Puppet Idols Finals contests. This young lady of magic is thrilled with her Junior Student of the Year trophy:

“I am so happy that I’ve won this incredible award! I love magic because it helps me to express myself. Studying the art of magic is unlike anything else and I cannot wait to further my studies!”

Shelver, who also won the 2018 Children’s Entertainment Trophy, has recently returned from a whirlwind magical and educational tour to Las Vegas and New York in the United States in early October.The 16-year-old Bellville resident was one of six students chosen to represent South Africa’s budding magical talent at a series of workshops, demonstrations and meet and greets with some of magic’s greatest entertainers including David Copperfield and Penn and Teller.

The teenage magical allrounder,who graduated from his final year at the College of Magic in 2018,  is ecstatic about his multiple awards:

“Wow, what an incredible honour to be recognised for my achievements with these awards! What I loved most about studying at the College of Magic is the sense of belonging to a magical family and the atmosphere and I am going to miss it. A cycling festival that really is EVERYTHING CYCLING!

For the first time ever, a new concept in cycling takes place in the form of a Bicycle Festival will be leaving it’s track marks on South African soil! Bike Fest SA [#BikeFestZA] will take place the weekend of 9-11 November 2018 in Cape Town. The festival grounds will be located at Contantia Sports Centre where there will be everything from expo, to cinema, to workshops, talks and even a test track!

Bike Fest will then gear up (pun intended) to host the same festival in Johannesburg, 19-21 April 2019.

StateoftheART is pleased to announce the winner of the StateoftheART Gallery Award 2018.

The Award aims to champion contemporary art by emerging artists resident in South Africa, increasing exposure for their work, and encouraging further professional development opportunities.

The winning artist, Jo Roets, is based in Cape Town, and her light relief clay sculptures reference the various cultures of South Africa: symbolic patterns and shapes inspired by Islamic prayer mats, Ndebele aprons and neck pendants, Zulu earplugs and beer pots - and patterns from her grandmother’s doilies.

The ten shortlisted finalists were selected from hundreds of artists from across South Africa who applied for the Award. Two works by each of the finalists went on show earlier this month for the final round of judging in a group exhibition held at StateoftheART in Cape Town. Mirjam Asmal, Director, AVA; Mandy Conidaris, Director OOTC Gallery and artist; Carol Hodes, Curator and Collector; Macx Ncevu, Award Winning Photographer and Jennifer Reynolds, Director of StateoftheART, comprised this year’s panel of respected art professionals who named Roets the overall Award winner.

The Award Finalists exhibition reflected a broad range of media. As well as Jo Roets, the show featured the work of: Adele van Heerden, Chloe Obermeyer, Lebogang Mabusela, Anina Deetlefs, Janna Prinsloo, Tina Teles, Anna-Carien Goosen, Nadine Hansen and Lezanne Kotze.

As the 2018 winner, Jo Roets will receive a prize of a solo exhibition in 2019, and a R10 000 cash award to support the development of new work.

Jo Roets said, “Entering this competition connected me with fellow artists and like-minded people. StateoftheART did not follow the typical art competition model but invented a fresh and creative way of presenting this competition, changing the typical format and chronology of events. This meant that finalists had the opportunity to meet each other on social media before meeting in real life. This distinct characteristic of StatetoftheART sets them apart from other galleries. They really do value the importance of online presence highly. To have your work and name be seen by thousands of people is a win in itself - a spin-off of being a finalist.

As an artist it is one thing to set out goals. The challenge comes when action needs to be taken towards achieving these goals. Part of the process is working long hours, fighting through self-doubt and hoping that my work would be good enough. This is why I am extremely grateful for winning this award and gaining the recognition that it has afforded me. It is a self-doubt eliminator. My excitement for my very first solo exhibition cannot be contained. I can hardly wait to start the process and to begin planning towards the show.”

An atmosphere of euphoria and cries of jubilation were felt and heard by all as Khayelitsha’s terrific township duo Anele Dyasi and Dion Wabanie were crowned the 2018 Western Cape Junior Close- Up and Stage Magician champions, respectively, at Bergvliet High School on Saturday 8 September 2018.

The Championships, hosted annually by the College of Magic, Cape Town’s only magical arts organisation, tests the competitors’ mettle in showmanship, visual appeal, presentation, technique, originality and entertainment value.

Going wand to wand with seven of their equally talented teenage peers, Dyasi (20) and Wabanie (20) pulled out all the stops to thrill audiences with an elegant money-centric close-up magic act and a hilarious sponge ball manipulation and comedy act.

Dyasi, a student at Northlink College and an experienced international magical contest competitor, having competed in the 2015 South African Magic Championships and at the International College Magic Convention in Beijing, China, is ecstatic to finally clinch the Close-Up title:

“I’ve been competing in the Western Cape Junior Magic Champs since 2011. This is my fifth competition and I have finally won. I am so very excited!”, says the happy champion.

A stunned Wabanie, a captivating performer with aspirations of cooking up all kinds of culinary wonders as a chef someday, is in awe of his Stage magic champion award:

“This was the second time I entered to compete in the Championships and I won! I am so honoured and encourage other teen magicians to enter too. It is amazing!” says the proud winner.

In addition to their Western Cape Junior Magician titles and awards, the  young champions were each awarded a much coveted performance slot at the prestigious Cape Town Magic Club, which opens the seventh season of its Monday Night Magic series at the Artscape Theatre on Monday 1 October 2018, by Club producer and founder Marcel Oudejans.

In a tense and exciting battle to charm audiences and judges alike, this year’s Championships’ runners-up, in Close-Up Magic, Siphesihle Ndayi (20), from Khayelitsha, and Luvo Mrolota (18), from Nyanga in Stage Magic, missed out on the titles by just half a point and 1 point in their respective categories.The dazzling duo, who astounded audiences with a wondrous original paper cup, ice-block and pizza close-up routine and a breath-taking classics of magic Stage illusion performance, are in high spirits and proud of their runner-up trophies:

“To see months of hard work and preparation come to life on stage, to know that we gave it our all and still be recognised for it, is a huge honour. We look forward to going for gold again in 2019!”, say the thrilled youngsters.

This year’s Supreme Up-and-Coming Supreme magic Trophy, which recognises the most promising contestant with successful performance skills and great potential, was awarded to Sahil Samlal. The 15-year-old from Century City will soon be representing South Africa on a magical tour of Las Vegas and New York, the entertainment and magic capitals of the world.

“2018 has already being such an incredible year, having been selected to meet my magical heroes in the USA and now being recognised for my passion and progress in the art of magic! I am beyond excited to see what the rest of the year holds”, says the aspiring professional magician.

The people’s choice award, the coveted 2018 Street Magician of the Year, went to an excited 13 year old from Khayelitsha, Mbalentle Mahlasela.

Each year, a panel of esteemed judges from across a multitude of entertainment fields, adjudicate this ultimate teenage battle of the wands. Stuart Taylor, a renowned South African comedian, an award-winning magician and a graduate of the College of Magic, was delighted with the standard of magic acts seen at this year’s Championships:

“What an amazing show these young kids put on for us! The standard of magic performances was really high - so well done to the finalists.I know how tough these magical competitions can be because I used to compete in them. My advice to aspiring contestants is to experiment with their acts, be true to who they are and try many things - you never know what will impress future judges!”, says the celebrated entertainer.

The College of Magic, the Mother City’s only magical arts organisation, welcomed the Jive Cape Town Funny Festival’s international performers Mooky Cornish and Raymond Raymondson to its sprawling and wondrous Victorian manor in Claremont on Saturday 21 July 2018. 

With it being the first day back at the College of Magic after their winter school holiday, the organisation’s more than 200 students were excited to be re-immersed into their beguiling training which includes lessons in magic and its allied arts of juggling, mime and clowning, puppetry and ventriloquism. The Festival performers’ visit was a thrilling treat for the students! 

Mooky, a Canadian comedienne best known as the former lead clown for the renowned Cirque du Soleil, is a pianist, puppeteer, mask maker, accordion squeezer and chicken trainer!  Frenchman Greg Lackovic, who performs as Raymond Raymondson, began studying the art of magic and illusion at age 14. A gold medalist of the visual arts of the stage and music in 2014, this lauded artist shares his special brand of magic at festivals, cabarets and theatres worldwide. 

After a whirlwind tour, led by the non-profit organisation’s CEO Yolandi van Jaarsveldt, of the College of Magic’s century-old building and facilities which include Africa’s largest magic museum and the Magic Shop, South Africa’s only brick and mortar magical supplies store; the dynamic duo joined the Mime and Clowning, Puppetry and Juggling classes.  Mooky imparted some well-earned tips for entertaining audiences and how to step up a puppetry performance with the learners, while Raymond dazzled them with his gravity-defying juggling feats. 

Celebrating 38 years of teaching the art of magic and its allied arts as well as vital life-skills to children and adults in 2018, the College of Magic, the only organisation of its kind in the world, regularly hosts international artists for visits and guest lectures at its charming Victorian mansion:

Johannesburg, Gauteng – 9 July 2018 - American Founder of Pursue Your Purpose LLC and Forbes Coach, Tamiko Cuellar, will be launching a 4-city "Own Your Brilliance! Tour throughout South Africa and Namibia for aspiring and emerging women entrepreneurs from 11-20 August 2018 in honor of National Women's Month. The first-of-its-kind tour will be a series of Master Class workshops taught by Cuellar and are based on her 3rd book release, "Own Your Brilliance! - A Woman's Guide to Hiring Herself." Aspiring and emerging women are strongly encouraged to attend this event.

The tour will commence in Johannesburg on August 11th, then to Windhoek, Namibia on August 14th, to East London on August 18th, and end in Cape Town on August 20th. "South Africa and Namibia have some of the most talented and capable professional women who are seeking to be empowered to start or run their own businesses successfully. As an International Business Strategist, I am coming to help them get to their next level," says Cuellar. Attendees will leave inspired and equipped to own their brilliance and with ways they can prosper by using their gifts, talents, skills, and abilities on their own terms as entrepreneurs.

Notable sponsors including the University of South Africa (UNISA) and the Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI) have joined forces with this powerful event. East London-based firm Epitomely PRM, has also partnered with the event to market it in Eastern Cape and has brought on Cape Town based NGO Womandla as the official Corporate Social Initiative client so that a portion of the ticket proceeds can benefit the Womandla Foundation for women in Africa.
