Media Statistics: Breaking Down Complex News Coverage

Published: 09 September 2014

During the last year, Tonya Khoury, MD of ROi Africa, has established herself as one of the most credible sources for media monitoring statistics in South Africa. Since the funeral of former president Nelson Mandela, to date, Tonya is a regular face on some of the foremost media like, SAFM, Carte Blanche, ANN7, Beeld, Associated Press, Rapport and 702, providing reliable and insightful statistics on the Oscar Pistorius Trial, the 2014 FIFA Soccer World Cup, the 2014 Elections, the Olympics, the Nkandla debacle and many more leading news stories.

Khoury recalls how she initially started providing statistics to the media. “I was surprised by the amount of coverage the death of former president Nelson Mandela yielded and decided to share these statistics with the media. After that I started following and analyzing coverage of the Oscar Pistorius Trial I followed it from the start, devoting hours every day to finding new angles to cover to keep publishers and readers engaged, providing them to journalists, and feeding content to social media sites. Every morning and some evenings, daily stats were sent to a growing list of contacts,” she recalls.

At the beginning of the trial, she reached out to the four main media houses who own most of the channels in South Africa. The first publisher to pick up her stats, 702, asked Khoury to read them each morning on the radio show set up to cover the trial. The media quickly contacted her for more information, so they began emailing stats updates once or twice a day. “From there the demand got bigger and bigger, as new news stories and global events broke,” she adds.

According to Mathapelo Matjokana, the producer of the Afternoon Talk with Ashraf Garda Show on SAFM, one of the first media to use Tonya’s statistics on a regular basis, says that, With the arrival of Khoury’s statistics people were able to understand, for example, the Oscar Trial better as complex legal matters were broken down into simpler terms. It also allowed them to follow the World Cup and Olympics through a bird’s eye view with these analyses.”

Amalia Christoforou, Managing Editor of the Oscar Trial Channel (Carte Blanche) adds that Khoury’s analysis offered a simplified and entertaining comparison, giving a local and global assessment of news around the trial, as compared to other breaking news. Joshua Carstens, producer of Afternoon Drive on Radio 702, says, “It helped me focus on what is important and what the audiences are talking about. In essence it made the scene less cluttered.”

The producer of the Jenny Crwys-Williams Show on Radio 702, Gary Oberholzer, added that, “Certainly for our #OscarExtra presenters to be able to frame the growing or waning media interest, to describe the trends from a bird’s eye view, Tonya’s statistics were crucial. Especially on something as lengthy as this trial.“

Christoforou agrees adding, “”The ROi Africa analysis graphically depicted the way in which the OP trial narrative and news was able to sustain local and international audiences and media attention, which is unusual for a story that has spanned so many months with so much dipping and peaking of elements of interest . A large focus of the Oscar Pistorius Channel was depiction of the way in which the narrative of the trial was digested online through digital media platforms and social media platform users. The ROI Africa stats gave us in-depth analysis of this world and the way in which it was ingesting and delivering the trial story.”

The statistics of ROi also provided the media with new avenues to generate content. Matjokana adds that, before ROi they never used to have a roundup of stories that have made headlines globally throughout the week and when she and presenter, Garda, saw the value that Khoury brought on to the show with updated and reliable statistics, “we realised that it could be of interest to our listeners”.

Garda concurs and adds that, with the detailed, colourful, credible and immediate statistics Khoury set herself above the rest by delivering this information regularly and on the turn. “To add, Khoury was not just the communications spokesperson for the information - she was the embodiment of the statistics. She literally ‘lived’ the statistics, which showed in the way she presented her statistics over the radio. She delivered the stats in a most engaging, spontaneous manner and that's really important when dealing in the radio and TV space where information must not only be credible but it has to be delivered in a most entertaining way.”

Laura Wiener, 702 Producer, add that what made Khoury’s statistics so crucial is the fact that it was credible – “It is important for us at the Oscar Extra channel that the statistics be credible and accurate as we would not want to be disseminating inaccurate information and statistics to our listeners,” she stresses.

Catrine Malan, freelance journalist of the SABC, echoes this, adding that finding statistics for a case like the Oscar Pistorius Trial, isn't that hard. “What is hard is finding the experts, who are able to explain and put these statistics into context in a manner that is understandable to even a teenager sitting at home. We found that expert in Khoury. She has the ability to summarise and compare not only the most important but also most talked about statistics out there.”

Garda concurs, adding, “I love the fact that Khoury is adept at delivering the contact via email, then chatting about in air and at the same time tweeting the information. That synergy and convergence of platforms is really important to what I do on air,” he emphasises.   Malan concludes that Khoury’s work has always been spot on. “Especially on the trending topics like Oscar / World Cup, etc. her opinions and analysis was a top quality expert opinion that we will definitely use in the future,” she concludes.

Understanding and mitigating the risks of social media in the workplace (Workshop 2014)

Published: 09 September 2014

Companies are rapidly seeing the benefits of social media. In fact, social media is becoming indispensable for business, but with all the benefits come threats and risks as well for the workplace. Frost & Sullivan’s Global Workforce Study found that 64% of respondent companies limit employee access to social media through content filtering and website blocking technology, 51% restrict access by setting and enforcing policy and 25% have no restrictions on the use of social media by employees.

Businesses should define clear social media usage policies, specifying who can access social media, what sites they can access, when they can access them, where they can access them and what devices they can use to access social media during work hours. There should be no room left for confusion. Policies should be clear, well defined and communicated to employees.

Professionals who would benefit by attending include HR Managers, Digital Marketers, Chief Risk Officers, Social Media Strategists, Office Managers, Marketing Managers, HR Consultants, Employee Benefit Managers, Legal Advisors, Digital Projects Managers, e-Commerce Managers, Risk Managers to name a few...

Pure Linen bed-linen is now produced in South Africa Pure Linen (derived from the flax plant)

Published: 04 September 2014

A range of pure linen bed-linen is now produced in South Africa by specialist bed linen producer Linen Drawer. Linen Drawer is a significant supplier of bed and bath linen to the hospitality and interior decorator industries in South Africa.  Pure linen bedding is incomparably cool, fresh and comfortable. A strong natural fibre derived from the flax plant, it is more durable than cotton which results in a lifespan that can be up to 3 times longer than cotton percale bedding. The fabric becomes softer and even more luxurious with washing.

Pure linen does crease with washing and this adds to its “charm.” This creasing does however reduce after a few washes. As the linen fibre comes from the flax plant, it is considered to have natural antiseptic properties. Being a pure, natural product, it also has hypoallergenic properties.

The longevity of pure linen products can be seen when trawling through antique shops in Italy where old antique linen bedding is a highly prized commodity. These products are manufactured in South Africa by Linen Drawer from top quality pure linen fabric. This product is a “green” product because: Flax is a pure natural product that is MUCH stronger than cotton or cotton / polyester blends. Linen bedding has been known to last up to 20 years and much older examples can still be found in antique shops in Italy. The flax plant uses far less water than cotton and its cultivation requires no toxic chemicals.   The history of linen   Linen is a fabric made from the fibres of the flax plant. While linen is laborious to manufacture, the linen fabric is highly valued for exceptional coolness and freshness in hot weather. Linen fabric may be some of the oldest fabric in the world with evidence that linen has been used for many thousands of years. Fragments of various types of fabrics, including linen, dating back to around 8 000 BC have been found in a Swiss lake dwelling …..and dyed flax fibres were found at an excavation site at Dzudzuana Cave in Georgia – Eastern Europe, where archaeologists discovered flax fibres that were preserved inside pollen chambers which date back to around 34000BC.

This is the oldest evidence of man made textiles ever discovered. In ancient Egypt, linen was sometimes used as currency and Egyptian mummies were wrapped in linen as a symbol of light and purity and also as a display of wealth. Today, linen is usually an expensive fabric produced in relatively small quantities. It has a long "staple" (individual fibre length) relative to cotton and other natural fibres.

The many benefits of pure linen are said to include: ~ Bed Sore Resistant: According to Japanese medical research studies, bed-ridden patients do NOT develop bedsores when linen bed sheets are used. ~ Compatible: The flax cell is highly compatible with the human cell.  ~ Hygroscopic, Permeable:   Linen rapidly absorbs moisture (water, sweat and other body fluids); yet, it also yields moisture rapidly making it highly hygroscopic.  ~ Hygienic: Linen is considered to be hygienic, helping to relieve allergies and is used to filter fallout, radiation and gamma rays. ~ Filters:   Homes are known to collect radioactive gas such as radon, especially after the installation of tightly sealing plastic windows.  ~ Thermogenic:  Linen is comprised of heat conductivity and high air permeability properties.  Its heat conductivity is 5 times higher than that of wool and 19 times higher than that of silk.  ~ Support Hormones: These properties help make a patient feel fresh and cool; yet, helps keep them warmer or cooler as it is an adaptogen to the present temperature needed.  ~ Anti-static:  Probably due to its 5,000 signature frequency and ability to reduce static in the body, Linen is known for helping to reduce fatigue and lift spirits.  ~ EMF Friendly:  Some studies indicate that the body may be protected from damaging electromagnetic frequencies especially when near electronic appliances, computers, Wi-Fi, cell phones, etc.  ~ Purity of White: The studies on the color white and the reflection of light in linen is known to increase the body’s frequency energy adding more life and energy to those wearing and using linen.  ~ Promotes Restful Sleep: Reported by many to promote better rest and sleep. ~ Durability: Linen is durable.  Unlike some cottons that yellow with time, linen is prone to remain white and softer with each wash. ~ Hypo-allergenic:  Helps avoid allergies causes by other fibers. ~ Burns: Burn and sunburn victims and those with problematic or hypersensitive skin or who suffer from dermatological disorders are often prescribed to sleep in or on white linen bedding to help relieve pain and discomfort. ~ Promotes Good Stewardship:  Helps us to be good stewards of YHWH’s creation and promote a balanced environment since flax is a renewable resource and the linen produced from it is fully BIOdegradable. ~ Anti-Viral:  Recent research conducted has confirmed that choosing pure linen sheets and clothing allowing for daily contact with the flax fabric may help to promote and increase the blood levels of immunoglobulin. ~ Odor Resistant:  Pure linen helps to destroy bad odors.  ~ Fertility Support:

Recent studies have demonstrated that female fertility may be significantly increased by sleeping and procreating on pure white linen sheets.

12 Hour Period Protection, No Strings and No Wings

Published: 18 August 2014

Woman of today have realized that getting their period every month is, well I guess, just the way life goes. In 1996, Instead, Inc. pioneered a new alternative to tampons and pads with the development and release of its innovative Softcup.

Now in 2014, Maybe MOM is proud to announce that they have made this product tagged ‘The Next Generation of Period Protection' available to the South African market. Maybe MOM Instead Softcup gives you 12-hour wear time, comfort and convenience during your period allowing ladies to live life without interruptions.

Softcup is a flexible cup that is worn internally, around your cervix. It collects, rather than absorbs menstrual flow. It's hypo-allergenic, latex-free and completely safe when used as directed. Softcup has gained popularity for its many advantages over traditional methods of feminine protection including greater safety, longer wear-time, and clean sex during “that time of the month. Softcup can be worn during any activity including sports, swimming and sleeping.  Use one reusable Softcup for up to three cycles, which makes it Easy on the Earth and Easy on the wallet retailing in stores for only R49.99.

More than 200 million Softcups have been sold since the product’s introduction in America in 1996, and there has never been a reported incidence of Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS). In extensive laboratory testing Softcup did not promote the growth of the bacteria that causes TSS. Softcup does not change the body’s natural environment nor does it alter the body’s pH levels, natural bacteria levels or absorb the body’s moisture. “It allows me to use the softcup until the last day of my period, even when my flow may be little to none, it’s comfortable and does not cause dryness or irritation” says Amanda, owner of Maybe MOM South Africa.

“Because the Softcup was uniquely designed for the modern-day woman, it has grown tremendously and developed staying power in the American market, proving an excellent alternative to tampons and pads,” said Joseph Pike, CEO of Instead. Women have embraced the concept of the Softcup because of the greater flexibility and control it gives them over their lives.  In fact, when the Softcup is not offered somewhere, women seek it out rather than buy the alternatives.

The Softcup is an FDA-approved, reusable menstrual product made from a non-absorbent, non irritating polymeric material that has been used for over 20 years in health care products such as catheters and baby bottle nipples and contains no latex. It has undergone extensive toxicology, bio-compatibility and microbiological tests as well as human clinical testing, and contains no drying chemicals or fibers.
