October is an important opportunity to recognise the teachers who shape, guide and inspire South Africa’s learners. With National Teacher Appreciation Month taking place throughout October and World Teachers’ Day marked on 5 October, it is also a fitting time to reflect on something at the heart of great teaching: understanding the learner in front of you.

Because no two learners are the same.

They may sit in the same classroom, follow the same curriculum and write the same assessments, but the way they understand, process and respond to information can be very different.
