Women Leaders to Shape the Future of Higher Education at WLHE Summit 2026 in Cape Town

CAPE TOWN, SOUTH AFRICA — Higher education stands at a defining crossroads. Across the globe, institutions are being asked to do more with fewer resources, navigate the rapid onset of artificial intelligence, and address persistent systemic inequities. In the face of these mounting complexities, a powerful realization is taking root across the continent: women’s leadership is no longer just a metric of diversity—it is an absolute necessity for survival and growth.

From September 16 to 18, 2026, this realization will take centre stage at the UCT GSB Academic Conference Centre at the Breakwater Lodge in Cape Town, as more than 300 Vice-Chancellors, Deans, researchers, and policymakers gather for the second annual Women Leaders in Higher Education (WLHE) Summit.

Organized by Bee Solutions and Consultancy Services, the summit operates under the theme, "Reimagining Higher Education: Women Leading Innovation, Equity & Impact." It is designed not simply as a conference, but as a strategic incubator to dismantle systemic barriers and rewrite the future of academia.

More Than Just Breaking Ceilings

"Transformative leadership in higher education must be intentional, inclusive, and sustained," noted a returning attendee from the inaugural 2025 gathering. "Women leaders are not just breaking ceilings; they are reshaping the very foundation of institutions."

This year's agenda intentionally steers away from theoretical discussions, grounding the narrative in three actionable pillars of transformation:

Innovation & Artificial Intelligence: Examining how female leaders can steer the ethical deployment of AI in research, teaching, and institutional governance, ensuring that digital transformation does not leave vulnerable demographics behind.

Equity, Belonging & Systemic Change: Moving beyond surface-level inclusion to address the root causes of gendered barriers. The summit will feature robust dialogues on equitable funding access, inclusive promotion pathways, and meaningful policy reform.

Health, Wellness & Sustainable Leadership: Acknowledging the often-unspoken toll of academic leadership. By placing mental health and sustainable work practices at the forefront, the summit seeks to eradicate burnout and emotional labour as the accepted norms of academic success.

The Voices Shaping the Future

The 2026 summit has curated a masterclass lineup of visionaries drawing expertise from across the globe. Attendees will hear from trailblazers such as:

Prof. Mamokgheti Phakeng (CEO, Perspicuity Consulting, South Africa)

H.E. Prof. Sarah Ayang Agbor (Forum for African Women Educationalists - Africa)

Prof. Esther Titilayo Akinlabi (Colorado State University, USA)

Prof. Daniela Pampanin (Universitetet i Stavanger, Norway)

"The WLHE Summit was created as a deliberate space for reflection, connection, and action," says Prof. Beatrice Opeolu, the summit’s Convener. "This year's summit intentionally integrates conversations on AI, health, and wellness—not as add-ons, but as critical tools for sustainable leadership and institutional transformation."
