Top matric performers of 2022 were honoured in glittering celebrations around the country this week. Hosted by the Department of Education, the national and regional events acknowledged their exceptional hard work in a challenging year; encouraging them to continue the next part of their learning journeys with the same commitment and dedication. Fundi was there to celebrate with teachers, parents and the matric guests of honour – sponsoring prizes for top achievers and sharing their excitement as they were called onto the stage.
Matrics across South Africa experienced mixed emotions on Thursday with the release of their final results. For many, this effectively marks their transition to becoming tertiary learners or active job seekers this year. With young learners challenged – particularly towards the end of the year – with load-shedding and Covid whilst studying for and writing their exams, the Class of 2022 can hold their heads high and are well-prepared for what lies ahead, says Mala Suriah, CMO of Fundi.
“Students continue demonstrating a spirit of possibility and resilience when it comes to their achievements,” notes Suriah. “The pass rate of 80.1% demonstrates this; up from that of 76.4% in 2021. We’re also seeing our young leaders of the future very clear on next steps and how they want to contribute to society and building South Africa. Many of the hopes and dreams shared at these celebrations speak to a generation that wants to make a real difference. We should all continue to watch this space!”
The national awards held in Gauteng on Thursday were followed by regional awards across provinces on Friday. Fundi supported the national announcements, sponsoring 33 learners with mall vouchers of R1 500 each. The team was also on hand in the North-West, Limpopo, Free State and Mpumalanga to congratulate top performers with goodie bags geared towards their next steps.
“As an organisation with student success at the core of our DNA, it’s critical for us to support these learners as they now take their next steps,” says Suriah. “For some this will mean registering in the formal tertiary space, for others it could mean a less traditional learning path through a combination of online and short courses. Our role is to help as many students as possible make this happen – starting now. Experience in the space has taught us that holistic support is critical for long-term success.”
With celebrations expected to continue into the weekend, Suriah invited matrics to use the weeks that follow to consolidate plans and get started on their next chapter: “If you haven’t connected with us yet to find out how we can help you on your journey, please do. Our Fundiverse (www.fundi.co.za) has been designed to unlock everything you need as a student: from funding to accommodation, technology and even data, all the way through to coaching and peer advice on our FundiConnect platform. Students needing bursaries should also visit our NPO, the Fundi Foundation to see how and if we can assist.”
