As the year draws to a close, nonprofit organisations (NPOs) are encouraged to reflect on their achievements and lay the groundwork for a successful 2025, advises Feryal Domingo, Acting Executive Director of Inyathelo.
Since its establishment in 2002, Inyathelo has been dedicated to empowering NPOs and higher education institutions with resources, training, and support to enhance their capacity.
“Strong governance, regulatory compliance, and innovative fundraising are essential for NPOs to thrive in a challenging environment,” Domingo emphasises.
With approximately 277,067 registered NPOs and an estimated 50,000 unregistered organisations operating in South Africa, the sector plays a vital role in addressing societal challenges. To optimise their impact and resilience, Inyathelo offers the following strategic steps:

Develop a Robust Strategic Plan
- Analyse past programmes and financial reports to set clear goals.
- Engage staff, Board members, donors, and beneficiaries for valuable insights.

- Establish clear policies and procedures to meet regulatory standards and ensure accountability.

- Provide training on strategic oversight, governance, and compliance.

Diversify Revenue Streams
- Explore crowdfunding, social enterprise initiatives, workshops, and corporate partnerships.

Monitor and Measure Impact
- Invest in monitoring and evaluation tools to track progress and improve programme quality.

Foster Donor Relationships
- Maintain regular communication and deliver impactful reporting to strengthen trust.
