Stillness And Motion | A solo exhibition or recent paintings by Mila Posthumus at StateoftheART opens June 4, 2015
Submitted by: Jennifer
StateoftheART is proud to present Stillness & Motion, an exhibition of recent paintings by Mila Posthumus; the artist's second solo show with the Cape Town gallery.
In this collection of work, with its voyeuristic undertones and narrative feel, a glimpse is offered into the private moments of the lives of the characters that populate the paintings. There are however two distinctly different ways of observing the human condition: in roughly half of the works, the context is detailed and dense, the characters specific and charged with emotion. The scenes portrayed may be quiet moments, like a pause before some action is taken, but, the complexity of the settings hint at the quandary of each situation at hand. In the blurred images of the other half of the collection, there is a notable shift: from the personal to the incidental. The context becomes vague and the characters anonymous. The focus moves from inward to outward, away from emotion and towards mere motion.
The exhibition will run concurrently online for those unable to attend. Works may be previewed and purchased through the website in advance of the opening.
Show opens 04.06.2015, 5pm - 9pm in conjuction with the Cape Town First Thursdays event.
Exhibition continues until 20.06.2015

Established in 2010 and a pioneer in the online art market in South Africa, StateoftheART re-imagines the brick-and-mortar art gallery experience for the digital age, differentiating itself through full transparency and accessibility. Our pricing structure is clear and straightforward with the majority of the proceeds from a sale being returned to the artist who created the work. Importantly, our pricing is very competitive, leaving no room to incentivise buyers with discounts. The StateoftheART Gallery Award, a not-for-profit initiative, was founded by the gallery in 2018 to promote artists who have yet to establish a profile on the contemporary South African art scene - so when you buy art from StateoftheART you’re directly supporting artists.
