StateoftheART announces revamped e-commerce platform to support the growing international interest in South African art
Submitted by: Jennifer
Cape Town based StateoftheART has been showcasing and selling affordable contemporary art online since 2010. This month they launched their updated website to support the keen global interest in South African art, bringing the works of their represented artists to an international audience with easy access via the web.
StateoftheART affords visitors to the site the opportunity to discover and buy affordable fine art that would not otherwise be easily found. The slick and easy to use website allows visitors to browse and buy high quality art in the comfort of their own home, making contemporary art from South Africa very accessible. Works can be bought directly from the website and delivered to door worldwide. StateoftheART founder Jennifer Reynolds says "we’re extremely proud of the leaps and bounds our e-commerce website has made. We want to offer our visitors the personal touch and intimacy of a gallery setting, without the limited selection associated with a physical space. More than half of our customers use a mobile device to browse our online art gallery using key tools to search, favourite and even reserve artworks for 48hrs whilst making a purchasing decision".
Online art sales continue to increase as buyers seek out new online avenues to purchase artwork. In its 2017 Online Art Report, Hiscox predicts online art sales will rise from $3.75 billion in 2016 to $9.14 billion in 2021.
Top tips for buying online:
- ask as many questions as possible about the artwork – most online galleries have curators and advisors who can answer all of your queries
- ensure there is a returns policy, in case the work isn’t as described
- adjust your computer settings to show maximum colour when looking at a work or the colouration may differ from the real thing
- as with any artwork, choose for love don’t spend too much money on an online purchase unless you know the artist or have a very good relationship with the online gallery.

Established in 2010, StateoftheART is South Africa's leading online gallery selling original art by selected visual artists. StateoftheART's virtual platform is complemented by the brick-and-mortar StateoftheART gallery in Cape Town; an intimate space hosting regular exhibitions and where art lovers can view a dynamic selection of work by represented artists.
Established in 2010 and a pioneer in the online art market in South Africa, StateoftheART re-imagines the brick-and-mortar art gallery experience for the digital age, differentiating itself through full transparency and accessibility. Our pricing structure is clear and straightforward with the majority of the proceeds from a sale being returned to the artist who created the work. Importantly, our pricing is very competitive, leaving no room to incentivise buyers with discounts. The StateoftheART Gallery Award, a not-for-profit initiative, was founded by the gallery in 2018 to promote artists who have yet to establish a profile on the contemporary South African art scene - so when you buy art from StateoftheART you’re directly supporting artists.
