Promoting Active Learning Through Experiments
Submitted by: Laverne De JagerUmdoni Christian Academy (UCA), a leading Cambridge school in Park Rynie, Kwa-Zulu Natal, is committed to providing a delightful learning experience for its students. By aligning with the Cambridge principles, UCA aims to transform classrooms into dynamic learning labs, where students actively engage with the material and experience the joy of discovery.
In a recent example, Grade 3 teachers Mr. Rungasamy and Miss. Pillay employed innovative strategies to make science learning interactive and practical. By utilizing instructional texts with sequence words and commands, Mr. Rungasamy guided students through a hands-on experiment: separating colorful sugar from sweets. This activity not only brought the scientific concept to life but also fostered valuable skills such as following instructions, understanding sequence, collaboration, and problem-solving.
The use of instructional texts aligns with the Cambridge principle of promoting active learning, where students are encouraged to explore and engage with the material through practical tasks. By incorporating hands-on experiments, UCA provides students with a deeper understanding of scientific concepts and encourages them to apply their knowledge in real-world scenarios.
Furthermore, the activity extended beyond the science lab, integrating English language arts into the learning experience. Students analyzed the instructional texts used in the experiment, enhancing their comprehension and critical thinking skills. They then followed a recipe and embarked on a collaborative baking project, applying their newly acquired knowledge and teamwork skills.
This interdisciplinary approach aligns with the Cambridge principle of holistic education, which emphasizes the integration of various subjects to provide students with a well-rounded learning experience. By incorporating English language arts into the science activity, UCA promotes the development of multiple skills and encourages students to make connections between different areas of knowledge.
At UCA, learning is not limited to textbooks and lectures. Through engaging and practical activities that encompass various subjects, the school fosters not just academic knowledge but also a passion for learning and exploration. By aligning with the Cambridge principles, UCA paves the way for well-rounded individuals with a lifelong appreciation for knowledge and a strong foundation for future success.
