Community Unites to Revamp Jabulani Crèche in Kelso, South Coast, for Nelson Mandela Day

Kelso, 20 July 2024 - In the spirit of Nelson Mandela Day, community members, along with His Church South Coast, Gathering Together, and Umdoni Christian Academy, joined forces to transform Jabulani Crèche into a vibrant and safe learning environment for children. The crèche, which serves the local community, provides care and education to 20 children between the ages of 6 months and 6 years and has educational activities and support for the children from the area.

Over 30 dedicated volunteers generously gave their time and effort to breathe new life into the crèche. Together, they worked tirelessly to add a splash of color, clean, and refresh the entire facility, ensuring that the children have a beautiful and secure place to learn and grow.

The collaborative effort demonstrated the true meaning of community spirit and the power of coming together for a common cause. Volunteers from all walks of life, including local residents, mums of the kids who attend the creche, members of His Church South Coast, Gathering Together, and Umdoni Christian Academy, showcased their unwavering commitment to making a positive impact on the lives of these young children.

"The transformation of Jabulani Crèche is a testament to the incredible generosity and compassion within our community," said Kirsty Pope, spokesperson for the initiative and pastor of His Church South Coast. "By working together, we have created an environment where these children can thrive and reach their full potential. We are humbled by the outpouring of support and grateful to everyone who contributed their time and resources."

Nelson Mandela Day, celebrated annually on July 18th, honours the legacy of the late Nelson Mandela, South Africa's first democratically elected president. This year’s slogan “It’s still in your hands to combat poverty and inequity” rings true for this group of volunteers and also demonstrates the lasting impact that can be achieved when communities unite for a common purpose. The revamped crèche will continue to provide a nurturing environment for the children, fostering their growth and development for years to come and is a long standing project managed by His Church South Coast supported by Gathering Together a global organisation with local roots.
