Know your rights and land a job
Submitted by: EmmaThe University of Cape Town and GetSmarter, South Africa’s leading online educator, are running the second presentation of the University of Cape Town (Law@Work) Paralegal Practitioner course. The course teaches a foundational understanding of South African law, which can be used for personal and professional benefit, or turned into a lucrative job in the paralegal industry. The four-month, part-time course, which starts on 30 April 2012, is presented entirely online through GetSmarter’s innovative online learning platform.
Ignorance of the law is no excuse for non-compliance with it, so it is vital for everyone to have a good basic understanding of their rights and duties in society. This has led to a boom in the paralegal industry, which consists of legal specialists who have not fully qualified as lawyers, but who can provide valuable guidance, support, advice and administration to laypeople and legal practitioners alike. Paralegals can work in any industry and sector.
The UCT (Law@Work) Paralegal Practitioner course is targeted at any current office administrators, personal assistants, recent graduates, journalists, NGO staff, businesspeople and anyone else who wants a leg up in their career by obtaining a thorough understanding of South African law.
The UCT (Law@Work) Paralegal Practitioner course covers a wide range of topics, including human rights and the Constitution, contract law, the law of evidence, court procedure, legal writing and research skills, and more – everything needed to perform a basic paralegal function.
GetSmarter’s advanced and user-friendly learning model provides students with a personal and professional educational experience. Students work through the course material together and receive continuous academic and administrative assistance during the course. Each of the 16 modules includes comprehensive and up-to-date course notes, discussion forums where students interact with one another, an interactive quiz and video lectures to make the course material more engaging.
GetSmarter is a high-touch online education company that works together with top universities and industry experts to present courses throughout South Africa.
