CallMyLawyer launches free directory of 1,073 South African law firms, searchable by town and legal problem
South Africans looking for an attorney now have a new, free place to start. CallMyLawyer has launched a directory of 1,073 law firms in 171 towns across all nine provinces, organised around the two questions most people actually ask: what kind of legal problem do I have, and which firms near me handle it?
Built around towns and problems, not long alphabetical lists
Most lawyer listings in South Africa are long alphabetical lists, or show a firm once under a single city. CallMyLawyer instead groups firms by practice area and town. Someone in Polokwane who needs help with a divorce can go straight to divorce lawyers in Polokwane and compare the firms there. Someone in Sandton with a workplace dispute can open labour lawyers in Sandton.
The directory covers 20 practice areas, including divorce, family law, criminal defence, labour law, property and conveyancing, wills and estates, Road Accident Fund claims, medical negligence, debt collection, evictions and immigration. Each area has its own national page, for example Road Accident Fund lawyers in South Africa.
840 researched firm profiles
Of the 1,073 firms listed, 840 have a full profile written by the CallMyLawyer team. Each profile draws on the firm's own website and other official pages. It covers the firm's history, the people who run it, the courts it works in, office hours, languages and how it charges, where the firm publishes that information. Profiles name their sources and the date they were last checked. The method is set out on the site's how we research firm profiles page.
Local court and legal aid information on every town page
Town pages go beyond a list of names. They show which magistrate's court serves the town, according to Department of Justice court area information. They also show which High Court division the town falls under, and the nearest Legal Aid South Africa, CCMA, Master of the High Court and Family Advocate offices, with approximate distances. For smaller towns with few firms, the page links to nearby towns so that people can widen their search.
Free for the public and for law firms
Using the directory is free, and there is no sign-up. Visitors contact firms directly by phone, email or through the firm's website. CallMyLawyer does not take a cut of the fees agreed between a client and a firm. Law firms can list or update their firm for free to correct their details, practice areas and languages.
Coverage by province
Gauteng has the most firms listed (464), followed by the Western Cape (241) and KwaZulu-Natal (147). The directory also covers the Eastern Cape, North West, Mpumalanga, Limpopo, the Free State and the Northern Cape. Visitors can browse every town from the locations page.
