Cynthia Thala’s Inspiring Trucking Journey
Submitted by: Dionne CollettDurban, South Africa – The #ThankYouTrucker campaign is currently running, with voting open until the 20th of September 2024. This initiative aims to recognise and celebrate the unsung heroes of the South African trucking industry—drivers who consistently go above and beyond.
Last year’s winner, Cynthia Thala, shared how winning this prestigious award transformed her life, both personally and professionally.
Cynthia, a Bulk Vehicle Operator (BVO) with Unitrans, has spent the last five years pursuing her passion for trucking. Raised in Vaal, Cynthia developed a fascination with bulk trucks early in life. Despite trucking being a male-dominated field, Cynthia was determined to break barriers, and with the support of her husband, she embarked on a career that many women wouldn’t typically consider. “There’s something special about heading down the open road in control of this massive vehicle that appeals to me,” says Cynthia. “With my husband’s unwavering belief in my dream, I knew I could prove that women can also excel behind the wheel in the trucking world.”
While her journey wasn’t without challenges, including gender bias and safety concerns like a near-hijacking in Limpopo, Cynthia remained steadfast. “I relied heavily on my faith and my family’s support during tough times,” she shares.
Winning the 2023 #ThankYouTrucker award marked a turning point in Cynthia’s career. “It was more than just recognition—it was a dream come true and a moment of great pride for my family and me,” she reflects.
The R50,000 cash prize allowed Cynthia to renovate her home and improve the lives of her children. Professionally, it elevated her standing among her colleagues and inspired more women at her company to consider earning their Code 14 licenses. “I have shown others what is possible,” Cynthia says proudly.
Today, Cynthia is a mentor to women entering the trucking industry and advocates for better support and equal opportunities for female truck drivers. “I’d like to see companies create environments where women don’t feel isolated, where they have access to proper facilities, and where they receive equal pay for equal work,” she emphasises.
The #ThankYouTrucker initiative has raised awareness of the critical role truck drivers play in the South African economy. “People focus on the negative stories and forget the essential services we provide, like delivering goods to remote areas and ensuring businesses keep running,” Cynthia explains. “This is not just a job—it’s a lifeline.”
Cynthia encourages everyone to vote for this year’s finalists: “The recognition boosts morale and opens doors for those considering trucking as a viable, respected career.”
